CHY1701- ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY QUESTION PAPER

Answer all the questions (5*10=50M)

1A)Define caustic embrittlement. How it is related to corrosion?

1B) illustrate an experimental procedure for determining dissolved oxygen of water?

2A)A standard hard water (SHW) contains 15 gm CACO3/lit, 20 ml of SHW required 25 ml of

EDTA solution. 100 ml of water sample required 18 ml of EDTA solution The same sample after
boiling filtering and cooling required 12 ml of EDTA solution. Calculate the temporary hardness
of the given water sample in ppm.

2B)Explain briefly the prevention of scale formation in boilers by internal treatment

3A) "A single molecule of magnesium chloride is enough to corrode entire boiler material".
Justify the statement.

3B) Explain the Zeolite process of water softening. List out their advantages and disadvantages

4)Calculate the amount of lime and soda needed for softening 1,00,000 litres of water
containing the following: HCL= 7.3 mg/L, Al2(SO4)=34.2 mg/L; MgCl - 9.5 mg/L NaCL-29.25
mg/L. Purity of lime is 90% and that of soda 98% 10% of chemicals are to be used in excess in
order to complete the reaction quickly. [Mol Weights of Mg: 24. Ca: 40, S: 32, Na: 23, Fe: 56,
Cl: 35.5, Al: 26.9)

5A) Explain ion exchange method of industrial water purification. What happen if we swap the
position of ion exchangers?

5B) Why docs chlorine work as a better disinfectant in water at lower pH only? What is the
significance of dip in the break point chlorination experiment?

2) List out the different chlorination method of disinfection and describe break point chlorination
with neat diagram?

3) Explain the principle, chemical equations and treatments methods involved in softening of

hard water sample with lime soda process with neat diagram?

4) A)Calculate the total, temporary and permanent hardness of a given hard water sample with
following analysis report

[1] 50ml of standard hard water sample consumed 42ml of ETDA solution

[2] 50ml of standard hard water sample consumed 19.9ml of ETDA solution before boling

[3] 50ml of standard hard water sample consumed 8.9ml of ETDA solution after boling

Standard hard water is prepared by dissolving 1.2gms of caco3 per liter

4 B ) Explain with chemical equations and calculate the amount of lime and soda needed for
softening 1.00,000 liters water containing the following HCI-73 mg/L, Ah(SO4)3=34.2 mg/l.:
MgCl2 =95 mg/L: Nacl - 29.25 mg/L. Purity of lime is 90% and soda is 98% 10% chemical are
used in excess to complete the reaction quickly Mg = 24,ca= 40, S= 32, Na= 23. Fe=56,
