MODULE 5: ERICKSON'S PSYCHO-SOCIAL THEORY

1. Write a story of your life using Erickson's stages as framework.

Erikson’s psychosocial theory asserts that there are eight developmental stages that every
individual will encounter in a lifetime. Erikson’s theory says every stage must be successfully
navigated by overcoming the particular conflict associated with each level of development;
however, transitioning from one stage to the next does not mean losing the experience gained
in the previous stage, rather that future knowledge and experience are built with these past
experiences as a framework. This is why when I am coming of age there are some mitigating
factors that affects me as a person. In this way dealing with other person is always a struggle for
me.

While there are some flaws with Erikson’s theory, it provides a good base of knowledge for
understanding what conflicts me as a person may be facing at a particular developmental level.
As an educator, it will be important for me to learn the tools to successfully navigate these
challenges and to eventually emerge as productive member of society.

Since I was in the elementary days I have reflected most on the stage of “industry vs.
inferiority,” which occurs approximately from age five to age twelve. This is when I question my
ability to navigate situations involving productivity. When I successfully complete a task such as
winning a game on their sports team or completing a difficult school assignment, gradually I will
become more confident in my ability to do so in the future. It is critical that I may be able to
overcome this stage of development so that I may instill in myself a high self-esteem that I will
carry with me into adolescence and young adulthood.

When there are activities, it will be important for me to take into account the developmental
levels of me in order to develop activities that are not too difficult but still present enough of a
challenge to be meaningful. In this way I will feel a sense of accomplishment upon successful
completion of the tasks presented. I must also take into account the fact that not all the time will
be at the same level even if they are the same age. I will need to tailor my capabilities to fit the
needs and a chance to overcome the challenges of the tasks, eventually developing a sense of
confidence and competence.

2. Explain the implication of Erickson's theory to education and cite 6 ways on how
this theory can be useful in your future teaching profession.
The implications of Erickson’s theory on education is that he showed us the developmental
stages the integrate personality based self-organization. All of his work considers to
“preference” of an individual and a sense of “independence”. He implies that educations will be
developed to persons mindset which will function as control over his/her decisions on what will
be the latter decision which will be influenced by the produced work of their parents to give
diversity to the young minds as future adults. Our sense of personal identity is shaped by our
experiences and interactions with others, and it is this identity that helps guide our actions,
beliefs, and behaviors as we age.
 Children are more diverse in adapting lessons in real life
 Children will more independent in their decisions when it comes to activities
 The children will be more interactive when applied to real life situations when it comes to
the academic lessons.
 More social relationships, more interaction of students and sharing ideas to the given
lessons.
 Can asses more students on what they are going through in class by the referencing of
the Erickson stages.
 Diverse identity which will give integrated sense of personal identity on students
behaviors
