Erikson believed that everyone will go through different stages in their

life that will get them to where they are today. That is the reason why he

proposed a theory entitled as “Erik Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial

Development” that tackles the personality development in a predetermined

order through eight stages, from infancy to adult. During each stage he

defined, he believed that the person experiences a psychosocial crisis which

could have a positive or a negative outcome for personality development.

Growing up from where I am today, I am thankful and glad to say that I

am able to resolve the first stage (Trust vs. Mistrust) of Erikson’s Stages of

Psychosocial Development satisfactorily. For my parents have given me

enough food, warmth, and constant care that I need to survive from the

moment that I’ve been born up to the 18 months of my existence. Because

of that, I was able to gain the sense of trust which then helped me to form a

good relationship among other people as I grow up. After the first stage of

the Psychosocial Development, I can also confidently say that I’ve

adequately pass this stage. It was around this time that I began to learn

important responsibilities to take care of my own self; it was also the phase

of my life where I began to learn different physical skills like walking, and

crawling. My parents have always been so encouraging and supportive on

me instead of overly controlling the things that I always do; this is the reason

why I became a confident and independent person that I am today. Even if I

became more assertive in the third stage of Erikson’s Psychosocial

Development, my parents never stopped me from Interacting with my

friends at school; they’ve given me a chance to explore and develop my

interpersonal skills and filled up my curiosity about the world. Because of this

opportunity, I was able to develop my sense of initiative, leadership, and

ability to lead my peers. Erikson’s fourth stage is all about Industry vs.

Inferiority, it is the stage where a person learns how to read, write, and do

thing on their own with the help of my teachers. Aside from them, my peers

have also given a major significance of my development. It is the stage

where I became so competent to other people and confident to my ability to

achieve my goals. However, during this stage of my life, I’m not really

academically competitive. I often receive low scores in my exams because I’d

rather play and talk with my seatmates instead of listening to my teachers. I

still believe that I’ve successfully resolve this stage because I may not be

that competent when it comes to academics but I am competent enough

when it comes to activities that requires physical skills that requires

teamwork. During adolescence years (fifth stage of Erikson’s Psychosocial

Development), major changes in our body in mind will occur just like what

happened to me when I was in this phase. In this stage, I became more

independent because I am more exposed to my peers instead of my family

plus it was also the stage where I get to know myself more clearly; my goals,

my wants, and what would I like to be in the future. Originally, I wanted to

pursue Psychology but my Mom insisted to take Education instead. Even if

Education wasn’t my first choice, I’ve learned how to love it as I’ve started

practicing my profession. Now, I am on the sixth stage of Psychosocial

Development which is the Intimacy vs. Isolation. I am still in the moment of

searching my soon-to-be companion in life; I would like to fulfill my goals first

before fulfilling my heart. I wish that I’d be able to surpass this stage

adequately so that I’ll have a happy relationship and a good sense of

commitment, warmth, and care towards my relationship soon.

This Psychosocial Development Theory of Erik Erikson indeed provides

a broad framework for us to view and understand a person’s development

throughout our lifespan. It allows us to see the reason why a person acts

positively or negatively, it is surely a good framework to understand people’s

behavior, including our students.
