MODULE 1: UNIT 1 - LEARNER’S CENTERED PSYCHOLOGOCAL PRINCIPLES

1. Paraphrase the 14 principles and explain in your own words.
 The 14 principles are divided into those referring to cognitive and meta cognitive,
motivational and affective, developmental and social, and individual difference
factors influencing learners and learning. Finally, the principles are intended to
apply to all learners -- from children, to teachers, to administrators, to parents,
and to community members involved in our educational system.
 The 14 principles are categorized in four main domains from Cognitive and Meta-
cognitive Factors, Motivational and Affective factors, Development and Social
factors and Individual Difference Factors in which represents the knowledge of
base of learners in learning. It helps define what "learner-centered" means from a
research-validated perspective. Teachers base the principles on (a) include
learners in decisions about how and what they learn and how that learning is
assessed; (b) value each learner's unique perspectives; (c) respect and
accommodate individual differences in learners' backgrounds, interests, abilities,
and experiences; and (d) treat learners as co-creators and partners in the
teaching and learning process.

2. Write a reflection paper on how you are going to apply the 14 principles in instruction as
a future teacher.
Learner-centered psychological principles provide a framework for developing and
incorporating the components of new designs for schooling. These principles emphasize
the active and reflective nature of learning and learners. Subsequently, question is, what
are learner centered principles? Learner-Centered Psychological Principles: A
Framework for School Reform. A school that adopts and lives by
these principles’ centers attention on learners rather than on teaching, curriculum,
instruction or administration of the school. In a learner-centered school, education is
done “with” instead of “to” students.

In this regard, what are the benefits of learner centered approach? There are 7
advantages of a learner centered approach in learning. It Improves participation,
improves retention of knowledge, boosts performance at work, develops problem-solving
skills, fosters collaborative learning, makes learning more fun and facilitates
personalized learning.

The 14 principles categorized in the four main domains such as Cognitive and
Meta-cognitive Factors, Motivational and Affective factors, Development and Social
factors and Individual Difference Factors. The Cognitive and Metacognitive Factors are
the one of the most powerful predictors in learning applying it in my class will give
guidance and can create meaningful and coherent representations of knowledge. Use
activities as strategic thinking to their approach to learning, reasoning, problem solving,
and concept learning. Next is the Motivational and Affective factors where motivational
and emotional factors influence both the quality of thinking and information processing
will affect the individual’s motivations to learn. To achieve this one way is that we do
different teaching methods to retain their motivation and curiosity in the subject creating
diversity to prevent the students in getting bored. Then, The Development and Social
factors where students will develop their social interactions and have opportunities to
learn. I will implement this by directing students to do a collaborative group activity
where they will interact and brainstorm their ideas on a certain topic and share their
presentation in class. This will improve social skills and develop communication to one
another for one objective and the last is Individual Difference Factor where all
psychological characteristics physical mental abilities, knowledge, habit, personality and
character traits. The first thing I will do as a teacher is familiarize the class. We should
know and study individual differences among our students. Individual differences in
bodily appearance and physique, habits and skills, interests and temperaments, abilities
and attainments should be recognized and promote diversity in class.
If will be given a chance to be a future educator I will include the decisions about
how and what and how will they learn; will value each learner's unique perspectives; will
respect and accommodate individual differences in learners' backgrounds, interests,
abilities, and experiences; and always treat learners as co-creators and partners in the
teaching and learning process.
