TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

A. Goal Setting

This morning, we will be discussing other

rules and you’re expected to make the verb
agree with the subject and construct
sentences observing subject-verb
agreement rules.

B. Elicitation

I have prepared four sentences and I want

you to observe the structure of each
sentence for you to identify what rule is
within it.

Pork and beans tastes good.

Cup and saucer is my mom’s gift to the
couple.
Pork and beans
What is the subject in the first sentence?

How about in the second sentence?

Cup and saucer
What is their similarity of the two subjects?
Both sentences have the conjunction and.

Very good! Both subjects have the

conjunction and.
We call those as compound nouns.
What did you observe in the verb used in
each sentence? The verb used in each sentence is
singular.

Good observation! One of the rules that we

are going to discuss is the rule on
compound nouns taken as one unit.

How about these two sentences?

The rich are residing at condominium.

The old are having their stable life.
What is the subject in the first sentence?

Rich
How about in the second sentence?

Very good! What part of speech are the Old

words rich and old belong to?

Very good! What is the verb in each They are adjectives.

sentence?

Very good! The verb in each sentence is

Are
are and it is plural, correct?

Therefore, the second rule that we are Yes Sir.

going to discuss this morning is the rule on
adjectives.

C. Explanation

Let’s have the rule on compound nouns

taken as one unit.

Let’s define first compound nouns/subjects.

Compound nouns/subjects are joined by
and take the plural form of the verb.
However, not all compound nouns/subjects
joined by and are plural.

Let’s use the sentence awhile back.

Pork and beans tastes good.

We have two subjects in the sentence but

they only refer to a single thing. Therefore,
our subject is singular.
What is the rule again if the subject is
singular?

If the subject is singular, the verb must be

Very good! That’s why the verb used in the also singular.
sentence is singular.

Let’s take the second sentence.

Spoon and fork is used for eating
The subject in the sentence is spoon and
fork and it refers to single thing or one unit.
Therefore, if the subject is singular the verb
must also be singular.

That is the rule on compound subject taken

as one unit.

Let’s proceed to the next rule.

Adjectives preceded by the and used as
plural nouns take a plural verb.

For example, The rich are residing at

condominium.
The word rich is an adjective and it acts as
subject or noun in the sentence.

What is the rule again when we use an

adjective as a subject in a sentence?

Adjectives preceded by the will take a

sentence is “are” and it is plural.
That’s the rule on adjectives.
