CULTURAL HERITAGE

Cultural heritage is an expression of the ways of living developed by a community and passed on from
generation to generation, including customs, practices, places, objects, artistic expressions and values. It
is often expressed as either intangible or tangible cultural heritage.

Common types of cultural heritage include: (01) built environment e.g. building, townscapes,
archeological remains, (02) natural environment e.g. rural landscapes, coasts and shorelines, agricultural
heritage, and (03) artifacts e.g. books, documents, picture, among others.

Intangible heritage includes voices, values, traditions, oral history. Popularly this is perceived through
cuisine, clothing, forms of shelter, traditional skills and technologies, religious ceremonies, performing
arts, storytelling.

The protection and care of cultural heritage involves the following:

1. Conservation
2. Preservation
3. Restoration
4. Conversion
5. Reconstruction

Importance of Cultural Heritage Sites

1. Evidential value. The potential of a place to yield evidence about past human activity
through physical remains that tell about the development of the place, of the people and of the
cultures that made them, while archeological deposits provide evidence about the distant past.
2. Historical value. The ways in which the people, events, and other aspects of life from past
can be connected through a place because of its illustrative and associative value with regards
to the development of other aspects of cultural heritage.
3. Aesthetic value. The ways in which people draw sensory and intellectual stimulation from a
place which embraces composition, materials, decoration, craftmanship, design, and the
choice or influence of sources from which it was derived.
4. Communal value. The meanings of a place for the people who relate to it, or for whom it
figures in their collective experience or memory which are important aspects of collective
memory and identity, places of remembrance whose meanings should not be forgotten.
