INTRODUCTION: The Navajo People (Navajo: Diné or Naabeehó) are a tribe of Native Americans
from the southwestern part of the United States . It is the second largest tribe in the United States
with an independent government that runs a large Native American reservation in parts of
Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. We will learn more about this tribe through a short poem and a
listening that contains important facts related to it.

Pre-Task: Where do you go for time by yourself? The poem Oh Navajo Girl talks about a little girl
who ventures into the beauty and serenity of nature. Though she ventures alone, she is
surrounded by the love, peace, and spirit of everything around her. Let´s read this poem and
answer the questions that follow.

The Navajo tribe is one of the oldest and largest in the United States. They are centered
on the largest Indian reservation in this country which surrounds the plateaus and plains
on the border between Arizona, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado. This location over
time has allowed them to acquire customs and develop economies and activities to
preserve their culture over time. They are a culture rich in ceremonies and rituals.

The Navajo were farmers and Corn was their most important type of food. They also
grew beans and zucchini. Livestock, mainly the flock of sheep was their main economic
activity using wool in different ways. Men were engaged in silver jewelry and women in
sewing and clay pots.
