STUDENT’S STRESS SCALE

INTRODUCTION: The present era is well known as the age of stress and anxiety.
Stress is affecting almost every individual irrespective of age, class, sex, race, caste or
religion. It is highly individualistic in nature. Some individuals experience more stress
while others may not. Studies reveal that any event or happening in a student’s life has
the potential to be a stressor or a major cause of stress. Students can quickly become
distressed and experience the sign and symptom of stress. When they experience
stress they tend to feel overwhelmed and life becomes out of control with too much
pressure, fear, panic and concern about how terrible they are feeling. Studies reveal
that stress affects the performance of students.

AIM: To find out the kind and amount of stress encountered by school students.

MATERIAL REQUIRED:

1. SSS Consumable Questionnaire.

2. Pen / pencil.

PROCEDURE:

The subject will be seated comfortably in a well illuminated room.

The subject will be given knowledge and explanation about the test.

The consumable questionnaire will be given to the subject and he/she will be asked to
solve it.

INSTRUCTIONS: The following instructions will be given to the subject:

This is a five point rating scale ranging from ‘Always’ to ‘Never’

The scale consists of 51 items describing undesirable experiences and events likely to
occur in the lives of school students.

There are 41 positive and 10 negative items.

You are supposed to give your reply on any one option by putting a X or √ in the
appropriate box.

The options are- Always, Often, Sometimes, Rarely, Never.

Reply to all the 51 statements is compulsory.


Your responses will be kept confidential.

SCORING/ ANALYSIS:

· 51 items provided by 5 options have been scored in order to get a mathematical result.

On the 41 Positive items the five point rating scale has been followed starting from
Never to Always and the score given is from 1 to 5.

·The 10 Negative items have been scored from ‘Never’ to ‘Always’ and the score given
is from 5 to 1.

·The maximum score on SSS would be 255 and minimum 51. Hence the range of SSS
is 51-255.

· The interpretation of the result would be-

1. Very High Stress: P76 and above: Raw score 195-210: If the stress level is more
than P76 there are some major concerns and the subject is in need of some
professional help to sort out the causes of stress.

2. High Stress: P61 To P75: Raw Score 189-194: This stress level needs immediate
attention towards the problems causing stress .Help from some professional will be
useful.

3. Moderate Stress: P40 to P60: Raw score 175-188: In moderate stress level the
subject needs to resolve some of the issues causing stress.

4. Low Stress: P25 to P39: Raw score 161- 174: The subject may have some issues
to be resolved.

5. Very Low Stress: P24 and below: Raw score 141-160: There is nothing serious
issues causing stress.
