Renaissance refers to the period of transition from Middle ages to modernity. The
art within the transition also changed and influenced differently than before. Golden ratio
influences the world of artistry during the said period.
The influence of it can be noticed on some of the creations of late famous painters
of that time like Georges Seurat, Sandro Botticelli, and the three great masters Leonardo
Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rafaello Sanzio da Urbino. The world-renowned “The Creation
of Adam”, artwork of Michelangelo was created with the guidance of the golden rectangle.
During the renaissance period, where many theologians are present believed that
the Golden Ratio is a part of the God’s secret code of creation. The artists also found the
effect that this ratio gives which is harmony that pushes them to use it in their creations.
Impressionism is the art that gives the freedom to the artist to create how they see
the world including the people, light, the atmosphere, object, and the scenery in front of
them. It is the art of capturing the moment and sharing it with the audience through
paintings.
Despite the purpose of this type of art, impressionists were still able to apply the
Golden Ratio or the Golden Rectangle to their artworks. French impressionist painter
named Georges Pierre Seurat was claimed to apply the golden rectangle to every canvas
he created. Some of its landscape arts showcases the horizons precisely ends at the
golden section of the height of the canvas.
Some of the reason that explains on why artists follow the Golden Ratio is to avoid
arbitrary points or points that are subjective and not absolute. Since the Golden
Rectangle’s basis is the height and width of the canvas, thus, using it as a basic
composition will make the dimensions of the artwork more precise and objective.
The 20th century which can also referred to as early-modern period started from
the year 1901 and ends in the year 2000. Despite the golden rectangle being used in the
early centuries, its significance was still visible in the early modern time. It is not as a
major composition of arts like in the past centuries but still have its effect on the modern
arts.
The swiss design tradition, however, still incorporates the golden ratio in their art
advertisements and designs like in the early times. This design style which started in the
20th century that is claimed to be influenced by the golden ratio was considered as one of
the most important movements in the history of graphic and design. It provided the
foundation for the rise of modernist graphic design in North America.
Another example of an art that proves the influence of the Golden Ratio is the
Helvetica Font that was mostly used in ads, book covers and posters from Swiss graphic
compositions in Switzerland. It was said to be often organized in accordance to the golden
rectangle. Even the famous architect Le Corbusier saw the significance of this ratio which
leads to centering his design philosophy to it. He described it as “in man by an organic
inevitability”.
