1) There are two trains(Train A

and Train B) running on the same track

towards each other at a speed of 100 km/hr. They enter a tunnel 200
km long at the same time. As soon as they enter, a supersonic bee flying at
a rate of 1000 km/hr also enters the tunnel from one side (say Train A
side). The bee flies towards the other Train B and as soon as it reaches the
train B, it turns back and flies back to the Train A. This way it keeps flying
to and fro between the Trains A and B. The trains collide after a certain
point of time leading to a massive explosion. The task is to find the total
distance travelled by the bee until the collision occurred. (TEXAS)

Solution: This puzzle can be solved with the help of physics and observation.
 Speed of Train A and Train B = 100 km/hr
 Length of the tunnel = 200 km
 Since both the trains are travelling at the same speed, Hence they must
have travelled equal distance before colliding, which means that they must
have collided at the halfway of the tunnel.
 Therefore, distance travelled by each train before colliding = 100 km
 Time taken by each train to travel 100 km and collide = Distance/Speed =
100/100 = 1 hr
 Therefore the bee must have travelled for 1 hr before colliding with the
trains.
 Hence distance travelled by the bee in 1 hr before colliding = Speed *
Time = 1000 * 1 = 1000 km

Q2 .2 hours after a freight train leaves Delhi a passenger train leaves the same
station traveling in the same direction at an average speed of 60 km/hr. After
traveling 4 hrs the passenger train overtakes the freight train. The average speed of
the freight train was?A. 30B. 40C.58D. 60 (TEXAS)

Solution: Freight Train travels 6hr Let speed a Km/Hr

Distance = 6a
Passenger Train travels 4hr speed =60 Km/Hr
Distnace 240
240>6a => a=40

Q3. A company contracts to paint 3 houses. Mr. Brown can paint a house in 6 days
while Mr. Black would take 8 days and Mr. Blue 12 days. After 8 days Mr. Brown
goes on vacation and Mr. Black begins to work for a period of 6 days. How many
days will it take Mr. Blue to complete the contract?A. 7 B. 8 C. 11 D. 12 (TEXAS)

Solution (1-8/18-6/24)*36 =11days

Q4. It is 12.00 clock. Find how often the minute hand meets the hour hand?
(TEXAS)

Solution 360/(6-11/2) =720/11 =65.454

Q5. If the date is written as MMDDYYYY, and then 10022001, i.e.)oct 2 2001 is a
palindrome. which is the immediate palindrome before that date. (TEXAS)

Solution 08 31 1380.
i worked it out like this.. before 2001, 2000 cannot be taken as MMDD becomes
0002.
also anything after 14 century can’t be considered as 1401 would mean 1041,
there r only a max of 31 days a month. so the century no’s must be only
13(reverse for 31)so the yr is 13xx. now 1399to 1391 is not possible as reverse
means 99 to 19 but max no of months is 12. so 1390 becomes 09311390... but 9th
month has only 30 days(lucky i remembered it).. so 1380 is the most recent
palindrome ... which becomes 08311380.

Q6. Two mathematician graduates bump into each other while shopping at
Vishals. They haven't seen each other in over 20 years.
The first graduate says to the second: "How have you been?"
The second replies: "Great! I got married and I have three daughters now." First:
"Really? How old are they?"
Second: "Well, the product of their ages is 72, and the sum of their ages is the
same as the number on that building over there..."
First: "Right, ok... Oh wait... Hmm, I still don't know."
Second: "Oh sorry, the oldest one just started to play the piano." First:
"Wonderful! My oldest child is the same age!"
how old was the first graduates child? (TEXAS)

Ans Product of ages is 72. Sum is the number on the building

We try the possible combinations of the product of ages and also the
corresponding

sum.

72,1,1 - sum = 74

36,2,1 - sum = 39

18,2,2 - sum = 22

18,4,1 - sum = 23

9,8,1 - sum = 18

9,4,2 - sum = 15

8,3,3 - sum = 14

6,6,2 - sum = 14
Now here's the trick. The 2nd mathematician was NOT able to guess the ages

even after checking the sum. From the table above, you see that all the possible

combinations have unique sums except (9,4,2) and (8,3,3) which have the same

sum. So the door number must be 14 and the mathematician is still not able to

find which is the right combination.

3rd clue refers to "oldest" child which means that (6,6,2) is not possible -

because there are 2 children with the same age of 6 and you can't refer to one

as the "oldest".

Hence the right combination is (8,3,3)

The ages are 8, 3 and 3.
