1 INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this document is to present the uncertainties of the Vx Spectra 19mm multiphase
flowmeter obtained during a series of tests performed in 2013 and 2014 at reference multiphase
flow loop facilities:
 Flatøy (Alfa Laval - ex Frank Mohn)
 Horsøy (OneSubsea)
 TUV-NEL (East Kilbridge, Glasgow – UK)
 National University of Singapore (NUS).

This document was prepared specifically for use by Schlumberger Testing Services for the
purpose of demonstrating the typical meter performances to direct clients under controlled
conditions and short recording time.

The results presented herein are derived from the increasing experience of the Vx technology as
more and more flow-loop tests have been performed since the first introduction of the technology
to the market. The results are based on data acquired during the course of those tests.

This document will first present the data analysis method applied and the sources of data used to
determine the specifications before showing the results and performances.

2 METHOD
The performance specifications are determined by analysis of flow loop measurements within the
required GVF and line pressure ranges (GVF = gas volume flow rate over total volume flow rate
at line conditions). For each flow period the difference in the computed rates from the loop
reference system and the Vx meter is recorded. This generates a distribution of deviations from
which the percentage falling within a particular limit can be calculated. In this case we calculate
the rate deviation that includes 95 % of all values (i.e. 95% confidence interval). This is done
using a cumulative performance plot as described in the Handbook of Multiphase Flow Metering
(NFOGM 2005) and API RP86 (2005).

The analysis combines data from four series of flow loop tests covering more than 200 test points
in a range of GVF from 0 to 100%, and in different pressure ranges from 8 to 24 bara. This analysis
is based on points within the operating envelope of the Vx Spectra 19mm as presented in figure
3.

The analysis consists of determining for each subset of output parameters over a given GVF
range the absolute/relative uncertainty and then plotting a cumulative distribution function as
shown in Figure 1 to determine the uncertainty encompassing 95% of test points (a measurement
deviation of 2.5 % in the example shown below).

Figure 1: Cumulative deviation plot for relative liquid rate uncertainty

The analysis was performed for several combinations of pressure ranges and GVF ranges,
grouped over ranges where comparable deviations are observed. The results are presented for
relative and absolute liquid rates, relative gas rates, absolute water/liquid ratio (WLR) and water
volume fraction (WVF).

Those tests cover a wide range of three phase flowing conditions and flow rates, essentially
covering the entire composition map (i.e. ratios) of the Vx Spectra 19mm meter as illustrated
below.

Figure 2: Composition map (WLR vs. GVF) of test points

The operating envelope of the meter is defined by the differential pressure limits over which
accurate flow measurements are obtained. This envelope is represented on figure 3 by the
green lines, showing the combination of liquid and gas flow rates applicable to Vx Spectra
19mm.

3 METER SPECIFICATIONS

The specifications of the meter was obtained from several test campaigns including those
validation tests and are as below:

Vx Spectra 19mm Performance GVF Range

(95% confidence level) 0-85% 85-95% 95-98% 98-100%
Relative 2.5% 6% 10% -
Liquid Volumetric Rate
Absolute - 0.3 m3/hr
Water/Liquid Ratio (absolute) 3% 6% 12% -
Water Volume Fraction (absolute) - 0.004
Relative Gas Volumetric Rate* 8%**

* Typical relative gas rate uncertainty may increase by 2% for flowing pressure below 20bar
** At GVF below 15% an absolute uncertainty of 1 am3/hr should be considered.

4 ANALYSIS

4.1 Liquid rate uncertainty

The following table presents the liquid volume rate relative and absolute uncertainty in different
GVF ranges.

GVF range 0-85% 85-95% 95-98% 98-100%

Liquid rate relative uncertainty 2.5% 6% 10% -
Liquid rate absolute uncertainty 0.3 m3/hr

Figure 4: Relative deviation plot for liquid rate

Figure 5: Absolute deviation plot for liquid rate

Specifications were met on both metrics in that case, with 8 points out of 231 beyond stated
specifications.

4.2 Gas rate uncertainty

The following presents the gas volume rate relative uncertainty.

GVF Range 0-100%

Gas rate uncertainty P> 20bara 8%*
Gas rate uncertainty P< 20bara 10%*
* At GVF below 15% an absolute uncertainty of 1 am3/hr should be considered.

Figure 6: Relative deviation plot for gas rate

At low operating GVF, the relative uncertainty has little meaning (reaching infinity for conditions
with no gas) and absolute uncertainty is instead considered.

Figure 7: Absolute deviation plot for gas rate

From the statistical standpoint specifications were met with 13 points out of stated specifications
when considering reference measurement uncertainties.

4.3 Water/Liquid ratio uncertainty

The following table presents the water/liquid ratio absolute uncertainty in different GVF ranges.

GVF range 0-85% 85-95% 95-98% 98-100%

WLR absolute uncertainty 3% 6% 12% -
WVF absolute uncertainty - 0.004

Figure 8: Absolute deviation plot for water/liquid ratio

Specifications were met with only 8 points out of 231 falling outside of the stated uncertainty of
Vx Spectra 19mm. At high GVF, the absolute water volume fraction (WVF) becomes the
evaluation metric and the specifications were also met with a single point outside of the stated
performances in the 98-100% GVF range.

5 CONCLUSIONS

The validation of metrological performance was done through different testing campaigns in
various flow loop facilities as presented in this document. This demonstrates that meter
specifications were met when exposing a Vx Spectra 19mm meter to an extensive round of tests
covering a wide range of flow conditions in terms of flow rates and flowing fractions. The
metrological performances confirmed with test data acquired in four different flow loops
demonstrates the measurement robustness, independently from test fluids, flow regimes or
operating conditions.
This validation was performed according to industry-wide metrological standards and statistical
analysis methods.
