Section 2. Words problems. Please write clearly and show all steps for partial credits. If you use a formula,
please copy the formula down first before plug in any numbers (70 points).
Problem 1. (25 points) A disc of 40 cm radius and 5 cm thick is cast of pure aluminum in a sand mold
casting operation. Aluminum melts at 660 C, but the pouring temperature will be 800C. The heat of
fusion of aluminum = 389.3 J/g, density = 2.70 g/cm3 and specific heat C = 0.88 J/g-C. Assume the
specific heat has the same value for solid and molten aluminum.

minimum volume for this riser? (10 points)
(b) The metal is heated up in a crucible furnaces with a power of 10 KWatt (J/s), starting from a room
temperature of 25C. Assume there is no heat lose, how long it will take to heat 3000 cm3 of the metal to
the pouring temperature? (5 points)
(c) If die casting is used instead to make above part, how the followings are going to be affected?
