Chapter 3 Fibre to fabric

We use different types of fibres for making clothes .


There are two main sources of fibers.
1. Natural fibers
2. Artificial fibers /synthetic fibers or man-made
fibers .

Natural fibers are obtained from plants and animals

Plant fibers
Cotton
Cotton is obtained from cotton plants .
It grows well in black soil and warm climate.
The fruit of cotton plant is called cotton bolls .

Jute
Jute fiber is obtained from the stem of jute plants .
Mainly grown in west Bengal Assam and Bihar.
Stems are immersed in water for few days. The
stem rots and the fibers are separated.

Animal fibers
Wool is obtained from the fleece of sheep .
It is also obtained from the hair of rabbit Yak and
camel .
Silk
Silk is obtained from the cocoon of silk worm.

The process of arranging two sets of yarns together
to make a fabric is called weaving.

5.What is Knitting?
The process of making a piece of fabric from a
single yarn is called an knitting.
