PROCESSING AND
OUTPUT DEVICES

Objectives:
At the end of this chapter, the student can:
1. describe the importance of CPU.
2. describe the functions of the monitor and printer.
3. enumerate the types of printer.

92
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER

Lesson 9
THE SYSTEM UNIT AND CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT
A system unit is the part of a computer that houses the primary devices
that perform operations and produce results for complex calculations.
This unit performs the majority of the functions that a computer is
required to do.

If it stands up tall, it is a tower case.

If it sits flat, it is a desktop case.

The CPU (also known as the Central Processing Unit) is the heart and the
brain of the computer system. It receives your command and acts on it.
When the computer system thinks, it uses the CPU.
The CPU is a processing device. It processes the information given by the
user. It directs and controls the
operations of the computer system.

Power button

93
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER

The power button is located somewhere on the CPU, usually in the front
or on the side. You press this to start your computer. But do not press
the power button to turn off your computer unless nothing else works.

Activity 46. Connect the broken lines. Then color the System Unit with
your crayons.

Lesson 2
THE MONITOR

The Monitor of a computer is the device that looks much like a

television screen. It gives you a picture-view of what the computer is
doing.
The Monitor is an output device. It displays what you type on the
keyboard. It can show words, numbers and pictures.

94
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER

Activity 47. Connect the dots. Then, color the monitor using your
favorite crayons.

Lesson 3
THE PRINTER
The printer is an output device. It transfers all your work onto a
paper.

95
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER

It prints letters, numbers, symbols and pictures. The printer can

make an invitation cards, banner, poster and others.
There are three main types of printers: Laser printers, Ink Jet
printers and Dot matrix printers. They all write onto paper in different
ways.

1. Dot matrix printers – are one of the oldest styles of printers. Yet,
they are still in use today because they tend to last a long time. It is
a kind of printer that uses thousands of tiny dots on the page,
forming the dots into letters, words, and pictures. It is slow and
noisy when printing.

96
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER

2. Inkjet printers – type printer that uses a jet of ink sprayed on the
paper to do the printing. It prints faster and quietly. The quality of
the printing is near letter quality. Graphics quality is also quite
good. Color printing is possible in ink jet printers by using a color
cartridge.

3. Laser printers – also create words and pictures out of thousands of

small dots. Instead of printing by putting ink, it uses static
electricity and a special ink, called toner. Laser printing gives very
good quality printing. It is becoming popular with publishers,
replacing their traditional printing machines.

97
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER

Activity 49. Color the printer using your favorite colors.

98

Activity 50. What part of the computer is being described? Encircle the
correct picture.

1. It is the brain of the computer system.

2. It prints letters and numbers onto

paper.

3. It is your window to the computer.

4. It directs and controls activities of the

computer.

5. It displays what you type on the

keyboard such as letters, numbers and
symbols.

6. It can produce a birthday card and a

banner.

7. It is not an output device.
