Cursor Keys
The cursor keys are found between the alphanumeric and numeric
keypads. These are arrows pointing up (↑), down (↓), left (←) and right
(→).
They are called cursor keys because they are used to move the
cursor on the screen.
65
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER
A cursor is the blinking line you see on the computer screen. The
keys such as Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up and Page Down belong
to the Cursor Keys
Function Keys
Function keys are the keys at the top of the keypad. Included are
the following keys: F1 to F12, Print Screen, Scroll Lock, and Pause/Break.
For Windows-based programs, the F1 key is always the key for Help.
Function keys are special keys which make the activities faster.
Alt + F4 – Holding down the Alt key while pressing F4 closes the
current active window. If there is no active window this opens the
Shut Down dialouge box.
F5 - Select this key to refresh the contents of a dialouge box such as
the Save As or Open dialouge boxes, or other Windows.

Special Keys
Enter
The Enter key is a very important key. It acts like the Return key on
a typewriter by starting a new line or moving to the next line. It is used
to do an instruction. ENTER also gives you a blank line.
Escape Key
The Escape key is used to cancel actions in progress before they
finish. It is also used to exit programs quickly.
69
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER
Backspace
The Backspace key erases the character at the left of the cursor and
moves the cursor that direction, too. It is used to erase typing mistakes.
Delete
The Delete key is used to erase the character where the cursor is.
Any text beyond the erased character is moved to the left.
Caps Lock
When the Caps Lock key is on, pressing any alphabet key will result
in an upper case (capital) letter. The number and symbol keys are not
affected, however. For example, if you want to capitalize the name
maria santos, press the Caps Lock key first. Then, type the name.
Without pressing the Caps Lock = maria santos
Pressing the Caps Lock = MARIA SANTOS
Shift
70
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER
Spacebar
The Spacebar is used to enter blank spaces in text. Sometimes it
can also be used instead of a mouse click on buttons.
Tab

Lesson 9
THE SYSTEM UNIT AND CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT
A system unit is the part of a computer that houses the primary devices
that perform operations and produce results for complex calculations.
This unit performs the majority of the functions that a computer is
required to do.
The CPU (also known as the Central Processing Unit) is the heart and the
brain of the computer system. It receives your command and acts on it.
When the computer system thinks, it uses the CPU.
The CPU is a processing device. It processes the information given by the
user. It directs and controls the
operations of the computer system.
Power button
93
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER
The power button is located somewhere on the CPU, usually in the front
or on the side. You press this to start your computer. But do not press
the power button to turn off your computer unless nothing else works.
Activity 46. Connect the broken lines. Then color the System Unit with
your crayons.

Lesson 3
THE PRINTER
The printer is an output device. It transfers all your work onto a
paper.
95
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER
1. Dot matrix printers – are one of the oldest styles of printers. Yet,
they are still in use today because they tend to last a long time. It is
a kind of printer that uses thousands of tiny dots on the page,
forming the dots into letters, words, and pictures. It is slow and
noisy when printing.
96
SISSAT│COMPUTER 1│1 ST QUARTER
2. Inkjet printers – type printer that uses a jet of ink sprayed on the
paper to do the printing. It prints faster and quietly. The quality of
the printing is near letter quality. Graphics quality is also quite
good. Color printing is possible in ink jet printers by using a color
cartridge.
