Engineering Ethics

Case Study:

A reliable, affordable and secure supply of energy is important for socio-economic

development. As a country of acute power crisis Bangladesh is now looking forward to develop
its renewable energy sources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat.
According to the approved renewable energy policy, the Government of Bangladesh (GOB) is
devoted to facilitating investment in both public and private sectors in renewable energy
projects to substitute contemporaneous non-renewable energy resources and to escalate the
contributions of renewable energy-based electricity generation. A plan has been initiated by the
GOB to generate 5% of the total energy from renewable energy resources within 2015 and 20%
by the year 2020. As an engineer make a report of Renewable energy project in Bangladesh.
You should focus the below point-

Identify, discuss and analyze following issues from the given case:
(a) What are the social and environment impact of the case?
(b) What are engineering responsibility to public safety? How might these responsibilities be fulfilled simultaneously?
(c) Discuss the importance of Engineering Solution to support sustainable development.

ANSWER: -
Energy sector is one of the most important point for any of the developed countries. Focusing
on this Bangladesh government, planning to invest on renewable energy projects as an
alternative of contemporaneous non-renewable energy. Renewable energy is a valuable energy
that is obtained from renewable sources that are naturally replenished on a human scale,
including carbon free sources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat.
The concept also contains biomass, the carbon neutral status of which is under consideration.
This form of energy supply is in contrast to fossil fuels, which are being consumed even more
than they are being replenished. In four main areas: electricity generation, air and water
heating/cooling, transportation, and rural (off-grid) energy services, renewable energy facilities
often use highly.
(a) What are the social and environment impact of the case?
Social impact: This concept of renewable energy also has social advantages, such as better
health, customer preference, technical innovation and employment prospects, but some
fundamental factors should be taken into account for the good of people, such as climate
conditions, schooling and quality of living, and the region, whether urban or rural, from an
agricultural point of view. Social dimensions are central factors for the growth of every nation.
The following socioeconomic gains can be accomplished by green energy systems: local
housing, improved health, career prospects and customer preference. The report concluded that

the global pollution reduction is rising exponentially over the years following the
implementation of clean energy projects in remote areas.
Environmental Impact: Renewable energy programs have also led to the enhancement of
environmental effects, such as the elimination of carbon dioxide gas, the awakening of the
climate community. The research found very limited impacts on people living in a specific
region, tourism, energy consumption costs and educational impacts. Important impacts have
been observed in raising the quality of living, building mutual links and developing societies.
They also noted that green energy technologies are difficult to build and are vulnerable to local
political and environmental factors. Forecasting, implementation and preparation require more
thought and experience relative to other projects. The two major facets of the atmosphere are air
and water contamination, which is usually caused by discharges of water from households,
factories and dirty rain, and discharges of used oils and liquids include hazardous substances
and heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, etc. In addition to water pollution, natural supplies can
be protected and the greenhouse effect and air pollution can be mitigated by the proper use of
clean energy sources.
(b) What are engineering responsibility to public safety? How might these responsibilities be
fulfilled simultaneously?

Moral concepts encompass the study of the achievements that a conscientious person should
follow, the ideals that an upright individual should follow, and the character that a noble
individual must embrace. Every human, for example, must be frank, fair, kind, social, courteous
and responsible. In addition to these familiar obligations, qualified practitioners have made new
contributions. These duties derive from the expectations of their skilled practice and their
interaction with clients, employers, formerly practitioners and the general population. Due to
their specialization, experience and skills, they are allowed by the public to use their knowledge
to affect the lives of their clients significantly.
The Codes of Ethics for Engineers note that they should be of utmost value to the well-being,
wellbeing and benefit of the society, rather than any other obligation to patrons and employers.
Engineering and engineering firms have offered no advice on prioritizing Collective products,
with the exception of in-depth situations such as whistle-blowing. When an engineer finds an
imminent danger to the welfare of the environment, the engineer should alert the authorities
involved. If this bullying is not treated and is not carried out within the association involved, it
is expected that the engineers will either lift the flag or blow the whistle.

(c) Discuss the importance of Engineering Solution to support sustainable development.

Engineers are increasingly expected to play a leading role in sustainable development, tackling
global problems such as resource scarcity, environmental degradation, exponential population
growth and disruption to ecosystems. In the 20th century, engineering achievements were
created without taking into account their effects on societal, economic and environmental

natural systems. Considering the challenges facing our planet today and the problems expected
to emerge in the first half of the 21st century, engineers need to reconsider their thinking and
embrace a new mission statement-to help create a more prosperous, prosperous and inclusive
environment. . For that to occur, engineers must adopt a completely different attitude towards
natural and cultural systems and reconsider interactions between engineering disciplines, non-
technical fields and the society. As we enter the twenty-first century, we must adopt a more
holistic approach to engineering. This will require:
1. A major paradigm shifts from control of nature to participation with nature.
2. An awareness of ecosystems, ecosystems services, and the preservation and restoration of
natural capital.
3. A new mindset of the mutual enhancement of nature and humans that embraces the principles
of sustainable development.
