Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education – Home Economics Beauty/Nail Care Services
Grade 9 Self Learning Module. This covers the development of the learner’s knowledge, skills, and attitude
required in performing hand and foot spa competencies.

This will be the source of information for you to acquire skills in this particular competency to
become a competent nail technician independently and at your own pace, with minimum supervision or help
from your instructor.

The content of this lesson deals with the steps in giving hand and foot spa treatment with the
following objectives;
• arrange the steps in hand and foot spa treatment;
• explain the importance of knowing the contraindications in hand spa/foot spa treatment;
• prepare and use necessary tools and supplies/materials for hand washing;
• wash client’s hand with lukewarm water and soap, and towel-dry before and after scrubbing; and
• value the importance of proper hand washing.

A. Pre-hand Spa Procedures

• Before the start the actual paraffin hand and foot spa procedures. The pre-hand spa includes the
preparation of the tools, equipment, supplies, clients, and nail technicians. It also considers the
following cautions or reminders to avoid accidents or failure in providing the services.
• Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like a non-splash proof apron and mask as protection.
• Analyze the skin before treatment like the presence of contraindications, conditions, or situations where
a particular treatment cannot be carried out or is restricted like nail disorders, diseases, skin allergies,
poor blood circulation, large skin wounds, diabetes, and contagious diseases.
• Wash hands before and after treatment.
• Keep your nails short and filed.
• Always check the hand spa machine for functionality and safety.
• Make sure you check the hotness of the melted paraffin wax before soaking the hands or foot in the
hand spa machine.
• The individual work stations should be clean and all disposable tools are removed and thrown away and
the work station sanitized, and new clean and sanitized tools set out before you start.

• Always use clean and sterilized equipment, tools, and implements.
• Proper Steps to Hand Washing

Handwashing is important. It’s one of the best ways to


prevent the spread of germs. Cleaning hands through proper
handwashing can stop germs from spreading from one person to
another and throughout an entire service in the workplace. On the
next page are the steps for proper handwashing.

• Prepare the following; clean towel, liquid hand soap or any hand washing soap, scrubbing glove, and
two small basins with clean water.
• Nail technicians should wear a scrubbing glove to any of his/her hand.
• Seat the client comfortably.
• Wet the client’s hands with clean water and apply soap.
• Lather the client’s hands by rubbing them along with the soap, using a scrubbing glove. Then, lather
the backs of hands, between fingers, and under nails. Scrub the client’s hands for at least 20 seconds
from beginning to end twice.
• Rinse the client’s hands well on the prepared basin with water and rinse again in the other basin to
thoroughly clean avoiding not to splash on the client and on the floor.
• Dry the client’s hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Separate the towel for laundry to avoid the
spread of germs between clients. It should only be used once
• Discard the used water from the basin and disinfect before using to again to other clients.

How to Melt the Wax?

• Add one pack of paraffin wax to the hand spa machine or


without a hand spa machine, use a double boiler pan. It is a
large one that looks a lot like a regular saucepan and a Paraffin Wax
smaller, shallower pan that settles inside. To use one, you fill
the bottom pan with an inch or two of water and set the Photo credit by Lucille N. Quiriado
shallow pan on top. Over the slow fire, the steam of the water
in the bottom pan begins to melt the paraffin slowly. Add one dipper of water in it. Apply with the
lowest heat since the paraffin wax is highly flammable when applied with extreme heat.
• Take the boiler off the stove when the wax melted. Carefully pour the wax into an oiled plastic
container.
• Wait for a thin skin to form on the top of the wax.

• Check the temperature of the wax with a thermometer. The melted wax is ready to use when it ranges
125°F (51.7°C).
• If using hand spa machine equipment, turn on the gauge
until the wax is melted, then test the temperature
according to the procedure.

Steps in Paraffin Hand Spa Services

• Wash client’s hand with lukewarm water and soap, and towel–dry before and after using a scrubbing
glove.
• Prepare and use necessary hand spa tools and equipment according to OHSC requirements.
• Determine and test appropriate temperature for heat tolerance of client though applying a small amount
of paraffin wax or skin test on the client’s wrist using a paraffin brush.
• Then, soak hands for four seconds for three consecutive times in wax and wrap with plastic gloves and
mittens.
• Remove wax from hands according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Apply hand softening products and massage according to the prescribed procedure.
• Advice clients on the after-service care maintenance program.
• Confirm and record the client’s desired service outcome.
