Advocacy: Awareness About Self-Medication and Its Dangers

Good morning everyone, I am Degie Allison B. Alauig, and I advocate for awareness
about self-medication and its dangers. Defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, self-medication
is the self-consumption of medication without getting advice from a physician for consultation or
treatment.

According to Bennadi (2013), self-medication is a global phenomenon, and most

Filipinos resort to self-medication due to different reasons such as financial problems, lack of
access to healthcare, and fear of being hospitalized such as us students because we do not
want to miss anything in our academics.

As stated by Halboup and Alefan in their study of Pharmacy Practice in Jordan, self-
treatment may lead to several health problems. This includes the misuse of over-the-counter
medication as well as the use of home remedies to treat potentially serious health problems that
may lead to misdiagnosis or masking of potential health problems.

Self-medication has risks and dangers, and these are stated by Vidyavati, Snehan,
Kamarudin, and Katti in 2016. These include overdose from over-the-counter medication, liver
intoxication or liver problems due to medications, emergence of human pathogen resistance or
antimicrobial resistance, misdiagnosis or masking of potentially serious health problems, and
worst case scenario, death.

Before I end this video, let us all remember that a minor symptom is still a potentially
serious health problem, and no one knows the best course of action other than your physician,
so don’t self-medicate.

That’s all, thank you, and have a good day.
