Key point of reassembly

<U-20-A : 2-axis coupler>
1. Put the base on a workbench with its sliding surface facing
down.
2. Apply chassis grease to the pin bore (28.8 mm dia.) in the
jaws. Place the larger diameter side of the kingpin part against
the base sliding face, and drive in jaw pins from the base slid-
ing surface to install them. Insert cotter pins (5 mm dia. x 50)
and spread the prongs securely.

CP-10
COUPLER

3. Use a 2 inch (50.8 mm dia.) plug (can be manufactured from a

kingpin) to insert the yoke between the jaws and base (with the
M16 tapped hole facing up). Place the cam plate so that the
M16 tapped hole in yoke comes to the center part of the slot in
the cam plate (at the projection).
At this time, a 0.1 to 0.5 mm clearance must be maintained
between the jaws and the 2 inch plug. (The 2 inch plug must
be able to turn with both hands.) Grind the outer side of the
yoke as necessary. (Only when the base or yoke has been
replaced with a new part.)

CAUTION
 Never grind the sliding surfaces between the jaw and
yoke or the inside of the yoke.

CP-11
COUPLER

4. When the yoke is positioned, remove the 2 inch plug.

 Install the spring between the yoke and base.
 There is a M10 tapped hole in the boss end of the yoke shaft
and the top surface around the hole is machined flat. Insert the
end through the cast hole in the base and align the hole with
the M16 tapped hole in the yoke.
When aligning the holes, the M10 tapped hole seen through
the M16 tapped hole must be aligned within 0.1 mm in all
directions. Otherwise the M16 bolt and M10 bolt will not fit.

5. Insert the lever (release lever) from the outside of the base
and then install and screw in the nut into the Z-shaped end.
Set the spring mounting hook so it comes to the front.

6. Insert the Z-shaped end of the lever (release lever) into the 16
mm dia. hole in the cam plate. (Note the sides of the cam
plate.)

7. Align the 25 mm dia. hole in the cam plate with the 12 mm dia.
hole in the base, and place a washer between the base and
cam plate. Place another washer at the top and insert a bolt
(M12 x 37) from the bottom (sliding surface side) of the 12 mm
dia. hole in the base. Install and tighten a castellated nut and
make sure that the cam plate and roller can move freely. Install
a cotter pin (3 mm dia. x 25 mm).

8. Put a M10 x 65 mm long bolt through a square washer (1.6

mm thick, 23 x 23 with a 11 mm dia. hole) and bend one side
of the washer.

CP-12
COUPLER

9. Move the cam plate to align the slot with the M16 tapped hole
in the yoke. Place a washer (4.5 x 16.5 mm dia. hole x 56 mm
dia.) between the yoke and cam plate. Apply chassis grease to
the roller (16 mm I.D.) and put the roller into the cam plate.
Place another washer on the top, and then insert a M16 bolt
(with a 10 mm dia. hole) and tighten it against the yoke. Insert
the M10 bolt with the square washer bent in step 8. above into
the hole of the M16 bolt and tighten the bolt against the yoke
shaft. Bend the square washer on one of the flats of the M16
bolt head for antirotation. (Make sure that the cam plate and
roller can move freely after both bolts are tightened.)

10. Apply plenty of chassis grease to the roller groove in the cam
plate.
11. After the cam plate is installed, install the lever return spring.
12. Align the lock guard and spring with the cast holes in the base
and insert the pin and two cotter pins (3 mm dia. x 25). Spread
the prongs securely. Open the jaws completely, and adjust the
lock guard end so that it comes between the larger diameter
side and smaller diameter side (or the center of the jaw's thick-
ness) by bending the lock guard end.

CAUTION
 Be careful not to get fingers caught in when opening the
jaws or adjusting the lock guard.

13. Install the 2 inch plug used in step 3. above or the lock tester
to the jaws again. Place a cushion rubber in the yoke shaft
end, install the washer (3.2 mm thick x 22 mm dia. hole x 40
mm dia.). Lightly tighten the first nut, and adjust the clearance
between the jaws and 2 inch plug to 0.1 to 0.5 mm with the
nut. When the adjustment is complete, remove the 2 inch plug.
14. Install the adjusting wedge mounting stud bolt with LOCTITE
#262 applied to its base, and then install the adjusting wedge,
lock washer, and castellated nut in this order. Fix with a cotter
pin.
15. Press fit the bushing into the base. Place two springs on the
base and then install the pitching (beam) shaft to the base.
16. When inserting the rolling (lateral) shaft from the rear side of
the base, align the 16 mm dia. counterbore at the center of the
rolling (lateral) shaft with the beam shaft.
17. Apply THREEBOND 1373B to the antirotation cap bolt for the
rolling (lateral) shaft, and then install it to the beam shaft.
18. Install the washer and castellated nut in this order to the rolling
(lateral) shaft, and then tighten the castellated nut. Install a
cotter pin and spread the prongs securely.
19. Install the grease nipple to the rolling (lateral) shaft.

CP-13
COUPLER

20. Turnover the coupler assembly. (With the base sliding surface
facing up) Turnover the base body (to the same condition as
mounted on the frame) and check the clearance between the
jaws and the kingpin with the lock tester.

21. If the clearance between the kingpin part of the lock tester and
jaws are too small (less than 0.1 mm), turn the adjusting nut at
the yoke shaft end clockwise (tighten) to increase the clear-
ance.

22. If the clearance is too large, turn the adjusting nut of the yoke
shaft counterclockwise (loosen) to decrease the clearance.

23. When performing adjustments in the above steps 21 and 22,

be sure to open and close the jaws four or five times to check if
the clearance between the kingpin of the lock tester and jaws
is correct (0.1 to 0.5 mm) and each lock mechanism operates
normally. Then tighten the lock nut of the yoke shaft.
Firmly tighten the outer nut while using care not to move the
inner adjusting nut to securely lock the double nuts.

CAUTION
 If the nut is adjusted without using the lock tester four
or five times, the clearance between the kingpin and
jaws may not be maintained correctly due to the effect
of the cushion rubber or spring. Be sure to observe the
procedure to prevent problems such as premature wear
of jaws or inoperative levers.

ADJUSTMENT
ADJUSTMENT OF LOCK JAW
<FW8>
Use a lock tester made by Holland Hitch Company to check the
operation of the locking mechanism of the fifth wheel. If necessary,
adjust it. If the lock jaw cannot be properly adjusted due to wear,
repair or replace the fifth wheel.

1. Close the lock jaw with a lock tester.

2. Using a 15/16 inch socket wrench, turn the adjusting bolt
located at the throat (insertion hole of the kingpin) of the fifth
wheel by 1/4 turn clockwise to tighten it. Remove the socket
wrench from the adjusting bolt, and turn the lock tester. Keep
tightening the adjusting bolt till you feel a resistance on the
lock tester handle, and check the resistance of the lock tester.
Be sure that the kingpin of the lock tester is not inclined.

3. If you begin to feel a resistance, stop turning.

4. Loosen the adjusting bolt by turning it 2 turns. Now, the lock
has been properly adjusted.
5. Using the lock tester, open and close the fifth wheel several
times to check the locking operation.

ROLLING ANGLE ADJUSTMENT PROEDURE<U-20-A>

<Made by Sohshin Co., Ltd.>
The wedge (rolling stopper) can be slided back and forth to adjust
the rolling amount in three steps (0, 3, or 6 degrees) by loosening
the wedge bolt at the under side of the base.

CHECKING AND ADJUSTING CLEARANCE BETWEEN

JAWS AND PIN
<Made by SohshinCo., Ltd.>
Adjustmment of clearance
1. Pull the lever (release lever) at one stroke to a position where
the lever stays pulled out when the hands are released.
2. Place the kingpin part of the lock tester against the base slid-
ing surface using the left hand. Place the lever end against the
edge of the base and pull the lever toward the front of the base
using the right hand to lock the kingpin.

CAUTION
 When locked, the yoke shaft adjusting nut and lever are
pulled in toward the inside of the base. Be careful not to
get a hand or foot caught in.

3. Adjust the clearance between the kingpin and jaws to 0.1 to

0.5 mm. Hook a spring balance to the lever of the lock tester
and pull in the tangential direction. If the starting torque is
approx. 24.5 to 34.3 N {2.5 to 3.5 kgf}, the clearance between
the kingpin and jaw should be 0.1 to 0.5 mm.

 When the clearance is too small (starting torque 34.3 N {3.5

kgf} or more)
Turn the adjusting nut at the yoke shaft end clockwise (tighten)
to adjust the clearance.
 When the clearance is too large (starting torque 24.5 N {2.5
kgf} or less)
Turn the adjusting nut at the yoke shaft end counterclockwise
(loosen) to adjust the clearance.

CP-16
COUPLER

4. Perform step 1 of lock tester removal and place the end

(dented) of the pipe on the chain against a rib of the base.
Lever by pulling the pipe toward the rear of the base to remove
the lock tester.

5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 four or five times to adjust the clearance

between the kingpin of the lock tester and jaws within the
range of 0.1 to 0.5 mm and check that each lock mechanism
operates normally. Then tighten the lock nut of the yoke shaft.
Firmly tighten the outer nut while using care not to move the
inner adjusting nut to securely lock the double nuts.

CAUTION
 If clearance adjustment is repeated only two or three
times, the clearance between the kingpin and jaws may
not be maintained correctly due to the effect of the
cushion rubber or spring. Be sure to repeat the adjust-
ment four or five times to prevent problems such as
premature wear of jaws or inoperative levers.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Failure to observe these instructions can lead to dangerous operating conditions. Please read through and
carefully follow these instructions before mounting the fifth wheel and using it for the first time.

 tions of any kind will invalidate warranty claims and result in the cancellation of the design approval.
 The mounting of fifth wheels, mounting plates, sliders and
kingpins, as well as repair work, may only be carried out by
trained personnel or in suitable workshops.

1. Mounting Instructions

 When mounting fifth wheels, please follow the relevant mounting instructions as provided by Georg Fis-
cher and the vehicle manufacturer.
 The fifth wheel will usually fitted on a mounting plate. We recommend the use of George Fischer mounting
plates and the respective mounting kit.
 The mounting plate and the fifth wheel must be positioned to the articulation point recommended by the
vehicle manufacturer.
 Thrust plates can be used to secure the mounting plate in the direction of travel and the fifth wheel in the
longitudinal and transverse directions.
 The mounting plate must be selected depending on the width of the vehicle frame and the desired overall
height.

CP-24
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36=

 The fifth wheel must be attached to the mounting plate with twelve screws M16, grade 8.8.

 The specified tightening torue are:

190 Nm for M16x1.5 fifth wheel on mounting plate
350 Nm for M20x1.5 mounting plate on subframe

 The thickness of the paint layer in the locking region of the bolts must comply with standards prescribed
by law so as not to impair the clamping pressure. Compliance with Governmental inspection regulations
on bolts and the locking of these in vehicle construction is required.
 It is a requirement that the technical data be entered into the appropriate Vehicle Registration Documents
in accordance with the local Vehicle Registration Regulations [e.g. §27 of the Regulations Governing the
Registration of Road Vehicles in Germany].
 In the area of the brackets, mounting plates must be sportingly reinforced, in particular flat ones and those
with a height of 22 mm.
 The fifth wheel must be able to move freely, and may not touch either the mounting plate or parts of the
frame or auxiliary frame when used for its foreseen application.
 When mounting fifth wheels, all actual and national registration regulations must be considered.
 If the fifth wheel is mounted on a slider, the relevant mounting instructions must be followed.
 Beside the superimposed load, the criterion for determining the max. permissible load for a fifth wheel and
mounting plate is the D-value, which can be calculated according to DIN 74081, with the following for-
mula:

Example of a calculation:

0.6 ・ mK ・ mA
D=g・ in kN
mK + mA - A

0.6 ・ 17 ・ 120
D = 9.81 ・ =110.2 kN
17 + 120 - 28

Key:

mK = permissible gross weight of the tractor in t

Example: mK = 17 t
mA = permissible gross weight of the semitrailer in t
mA = 120 t
A = permissible vertical load on the tractor in t
A = 28 t
g = Earth gravitation 9.81 m/sec.2

The data for permissible loads for Georg Fischer fifth wheels and mounting plates can be found on the respec-
tive pages in the brochure. These data apply for use on paved roads and transport conditions as customary in
Central Europe. Please enquire for conditions of use other than these.

CP-25
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36=

2. Lubrication
Before putting the fifth wheel into operation, and then regular every
5,000 km, apply ample coatings of long-life, high-pressure grease*
to the surface of the Georg Fischer fifth wheel plate, the locking
parts and the wearing ring.

 The locking mechanism is equipped with two grease nip-

ples on the plate, which must be greased from the out-
side, even with coupled semi-trailer [see A].

* We recommend using a long-time hight pressure lubricant [NLGI class 2] with MoS2 or graphite additives,
e.g. MOTOREX MOLY 218, SHELL RETINAX HDX2, Renolit LZR 2 [suitable for central lubrication systems],
Renolit FG 150. If other lubricants are used, the lubrication intervals are to be adapted accordingly. When used
with a central lubrication system obey the instructions of the manufacturer.

Central lubrication
Connection to central greasing installation is possible.
Ensure that the operation and freedom of movement of the fifth wheel are not affected by the connection of a
central lubrication system.

3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Coupling
The semitrailer must be secured and supported.

1. The locking mechanism is in the open position

The Fifth wheel must be ready for coupling, i.e. the unlocking
handle must be fully extended.

2. The semitrailer plate must be approx. 5 cm lower than the Fifth wheel coupler plate. Reverse with the trac-
tor slowly under the semitrailer. The locking mechanism engages automatically.

3. Start- up jerk to be made in low gear.

Securing:

4. Inserting the hook into the slot beside the operating handle
provides a check if the mechanism is properly locked. If the
hook does not klick, the coupling operation must be repeated.

CP-27
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36=

ATTENTION: In any case, it must be made sure that the Fifth wheel
is properly locked and secured.

3.2 Uncoupling

4. Maintenance
Various parts are normally subject to wear during operation; this can, however, be reduced to a minimum by
proper maintenance. The following points must therefore be observed before putting the Fifth wheel into oper-
ation and each time it is serviced:

 We recommend that the bearing surfaces of the Fifth wheel and the semi-trailer plate as well as the King
pin be checked for damage each time they are serviced and repaired where necessary [see “Wear Lim-
its”].
 The functionality of the fifth wheel must be checked depending on the working conditions, however at the
latest every 50,000 km.
 Replace worn or damaged parts by original George Fischer spare parts.
 Important: Each Fifth wheel is provided with a Serial Number, which is stated on both the type plate and in
addition the coupler plate’s edge. It is important for clear identification of spare parts.

5. Wear Limits
The following must be checked:

1. Wear on Fifth wheel plate

2. Locking mechanism
3. King pin

Fifth wheel plate

Visual check
The coupler plate must be replaced when it is worn down to the bot-
tom of the lubrication groove.

Fifth wheel locking mechanism

Use the limit gauge to check wear on the locking mechanism.
If the locking mechanism is fully adjusted, and the wearing marks
are reached, then both, the Wearing ring and the Coupler jaw must
be replaced.

See “Play adjustment”

CP-31
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36=

2″ King pin
If the dimensions 71 resp. 49 are reached, the King pin must imper-
atively be exchanged.
New = 73 resp. 50.8

3 1/2″ King pin

If the dimensions 112 resp. 87 are reached, the King pin must
imperatively be exchanged.
New = 114 resp. 88.9

6. Adjusting play
The locking mechanism of a Fifth wheel is subject to a certain degree of wear, depending upon mileage and
maintenance. The George Fischer Fifth wheel type SK-HD 38.36 is equipped with an adjusting mechanism to
compensate for play. This mechanism is intended to compensate for wear on the coupling parts, but not on the
King pin!

Adjusting the Fifth wheel’s locking mechanism

The adjustment must be carried out with a NEW KING PIN.

Loosen the Fillister screw M10 8 on the Fork so that the Fork can
be moved. The regulation by one notch is equal to an adjustment of
0.5 mm. Re-tighten the screw with a torque of 46 Nm.

Repeat this procedure as required when making further adjust-

ments.

WARNING

When adjusting the locking mechanism, ensure that the King pin
has a play of at least 0.5 mm in the locking mechanism of the Fifth
wheel. If necessary, adjust the above play by one or more steps
until this play is reached.

Inserting the hook into the slot beside the operating handle pro-
vides a check if the mechanism is properly locked.

CP-32
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36=

If this is not possible, return Fork by one or more notches. If no fur-

ther adjustment is possible, both Coupler jaw and Wearing ring
must be replaced [see “Wear limits”].

If the King pin reaches the minimum permitted limits [see page CP-
31], it must be replaced.

7. Repair Instruction
7.1 Replacing the bearings
1. Unscrew all 8 hex. head screws [23] of the bracket assembly.
2. Lift the coupler plate off the brackets and place it on two wooden blocks of approx. 10 cm height on the
workbench. The brackets remain on the vehicle, i.e. on the mounting plate.
3. Pull the two bearings [15] out of the bearing pockets by means of a screw driver.

7.2 Assembling the new bearing

Press the new bearings [15] into the bearing pockets of the coupler
plate until they are flush with the pocket webs.

7.3 Mounting the fifth wheel on the brackets

1. Place the coupler plate on the brackets [4, 6].
2. Place the rubber cushions [13] in the correct position on the
tension bows [14].
3. Insert the screws [23].
4. New self-locking bolts must be used for each mounting
Tighten all four [30 mm across flats] hex. head screws [23]

 The fifth wheel will usually fitted on a mounting plate We recommend the use of George Fischer mounting
plates and the respective mounting kit.
 The mounting plate and the fifth wheel must be positioned to the articulation point recommended by the
vehicle manufacturer.
 Thrust plates can be used to secure the mounting plate in the direction of travel and the fifth wheel in the
longitudinal and transverse directions.
 The mounting plate must be selected depending on the width of the vehicle frame and the desired overall
height.

CP-38
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36 G=

D=g・ in kN
mK + mA - A

0.6 ・ 17 ・ 120
D = 9.81 ・ =110.2 kN
17 + 120 - 28

Key:

mK = permissible gross weight of the tractor in t

Example: mK = 17 t
mA = permissible gross weight of the semitrailer in t
mA = 120 t
A = permissible vertical load on the tractor in t
A = 28 t
g = Earthgravitation 9.81 m/sec.2

The data for permissible loads for Georg Fischer fifth wheels and mounting plates can be found on the respec-
tive pages in the brochure. These data apply for use on paved roads and transport conditions as customary in
Central Europe. Please enquire for conditions of use other than these.

2. Lubrication
Before putting the fifth wheel into operation, and then regular every 5,000 km, apply ample coatings of long-
life, high-pressure grease* to the surface of the Georg Fischer fifth wheel plate, the locking parts and the wear-
ing ring.

 The locking mechanism is equipped with two grease nipples on the plate, which must be greased
from the outside, even with coupled semi-trailer [see A].

CP-41
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36 G=

ATTENTION: In any case, it must be made sure that the Fifth wheel
is properly locked and secured.

3.2 Uncoupling
Secure the wheels of the semi-trailer with chocks.

Raise the semi-trailer using the landing gear until sufficient relief is given to the suspension of the towing vehi-
cle.

Disconnect the supply cables.

Open the locking mechanism.

 Disengage snap hook 1

 Swivel the unlocking handle to the rear 2 pull it out 3 and hook
its lug onto the edge of the plate 4 & 5

CP-42
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36 G=

Drive the tractor out.

The Fifth wheel is automatically ready for coupling again.

3.3 ON/OFF-road operation

“On-road” operation:
The plate locking mechanism is located on both sides of the fifth
wheel beneath the hitch plate.
For safe use “On-road” and other firm level applications, the plate
locking mechanism must be engaged.

“Off-road” operation:
The plate locking mechanism should be opened for “Off-road” applications.

1. Remove snap hook.

2. Fully open both of the locking handles (1 each side of the
plate) until the stop prevents further outwards movement.
3. Lock the handle in position with the snap hook. If the hook
cannot be inserted, the lock is not fully open and the operation
must be repeated.

CP-43
=FIFTH WHEEL SK-HD 38.36 G=

 The plate locking mechanism can only be operated if the tractor and trailer unit is absolutely level (if nees-
sary using appropriated aids).
 With the plate unlocked, the vehicle may only be driven “Off-road” at low speed. Before driving “On-road”
the plate must always be locked.

3.4 Conversion 3 1/2" to 2" and vice-versa

Even in mounted condition, the Fifth wheel can be converted within
a few minutes.

Dis-and Reassembly of Coupler jaw

the grease pipe slides into the plastic slider.

Before starting operation: Coat again with multi-purpose grease and replace the manufacturer’s
plate!

6. Adjusting play
The locking mechanism of a Fifth wheel is subject to a certain degree of wear, depending upon mileage and
maintenance. The George Fischer Fifth wheel type SK-HD 38.36 G is equipped with an adjusting mechanism
to compensate for play. This mechanism is intended to compensate for wear on the coupling parts, but not on
the King pin!

If this is not possible, return Fork by one or more notches. If no fur-

ther adjustment is possible, both Coupler jaw and Wearing ring
must be replaced [see “Wear limits”].

If the King pin reaches the minimum permitted limits [see page CP-
46], it must be replaced.
