4.2 Performing the software upgrade to NX 21.00 manually (Required for upgrade from NX
3.0.8950) ................................................................................................................................. 35
For NX PCs that are still running on Windows XP: In February 2014, Agfa Medical Imaging
launched a “NX Windows XP to NX Windows 7 upgrade program”. Refer to the Services
Newsletter 2014-001. Note, that this document is accessible by Service Managers only.
With this program Windows XP PCs are replaced by Windows 7 PCs with up-to-date NX
software pre-installed. For more information on restrictions and how to get a new license
file refer to following Service Bulletin: NX 2.0.8900 / 3.0.8900 - SB No. 05, Exchanging a
HP PC and submitting support cases to HP, Document ID 35890272.
*Some NX 2.0.8500 / 3.0.8500 PCs were still delivered on XP: All HP 8540p notebooks; the first HP 8560
notebooks.
The following table shows the main steps of the software upgrade procedure:
Purpose: Information about the current system hardware and software is required:
• To generate the Application License File. This can be performed off-site by the
NSO or on-line via ELMS.
• To organize compatible software for a digitizer connected via FireWire (TWAIN)
interface.
• To organize a USB hard disk with sufficient disk space, in case the customer does
not archive the images (Image data backup is done for safety reasons only.
Images are preserved during the software upgrade)
(1) Collect the following information about the old system on site via system
database in the NSO, remote log in or telephone call and keep it for further steps:
(2) Collect the following information about the new ordered software:
•
Purpose: Ordering the upgrade material instead of downloading the files from the FTP server
can be required due to commercial reasons.
NOTE:
For detailed information about the the NX Starterkit DVDs see:
• Compatibility to hardware platforms: CR/DR Interoperability Matrix, Document
ID 31333326
• Content of the starterkit DVDs: Service Manual chapter 3 Installation Planning
Purpose: Obtaining additional tools, documentation and software before installation is required
for an efficient software upgrade on site.
(1) To find the compatible version numbers refer to the CR/DR Interoperability Matrix,
Document ID 31333326.
1.2.3.4 Preparing and External Hard Disk for keeping Images (for Backup Purposes)
Images as well as all configuration data are preserved during upgrade from
≥ NX 2.0.8000 / 3.0.8000. If the customer does not archive the images, it is advised to
backup the image data in case the software upgrade fails.
• As the intended use of the NX workstation is not an archive, saving data for
backup purposes during the upgrade is a business opportunity. It is up to the
national sales organization to decide about billing the time for keeping images. The
time required per image is approximately 10 to 30 seconds.
For 500 images this means approx. 1,5 to 4 hours.
• For storing the images for backup purposes an external USB hard disk is
recommended. Required size: The average image size is approx. 20 MB.
For 500 images this means approx. 10 GB.
1.2.4 Obtaining the new Application License File (ALF), additional installers and
hotfixes
Purpose: Obtaining a new license file is required, as each NX version requires its dedicated
license file.
Downloading new component installers like XRDI (X-ray device interface) or ASC
(Agfa Soft Console) may be required depending on the compatibility with
NX 3.0.21.00 / NX 4.0.21.00.
Downloading the latest Windows hofixes is required to fix software bugs and security
issues of Windows 7.
Possibility 1: Obtaining new Application License File (ALF), additional installers and
Windows hotfixes in one step.
(2) Write down the Service Unique Password (e.g. MkL40h81). This is required to
login as user “crservice” after the ALF file is loaded to NX.
(3) At the end of the process click Create ELMS Software Collection Tool.
(4) Execute the downloaded “ELMS Software Collection Tool” on the local PC.
This tool creates an installer for NX (NX Component Installer NX<SN>.exe),
containing the ALF file, the compatible additional installers (XRDI, ASC etc.) and
the latest Windows 7 hotfixes.
It does not contain the NX upgrade software, due to its size.
For more information see
• NX SB 07, Using the ELMS Software Collection Tool to improve service
efficiency, Document ID 49695878.
• ELMS Service Documentation, Document ID 24522499
Possibility 2: Obtaining new Application License File (ALF), additional installers and
Windows hotfixes manually.
(2) Write down the Service Unique Password (e.g. MkL40h81). This is required to
login as user “crservice” after the ALF file is loaded to NX.
(3) Download the required component installers (XRDI, ASC etc.) from the Agfa
MedImg Library.
The required component installers are listed in the Simplified ELMS DR
Subproduct Interoperability Matrix, Document ID 35878296.
(4) Run the FUSE updater on the Service PC to receive the latest available Windows
7 or Windows 10 hotfixes.
For instructions to obtain and install the Fast Update Service (FUSE) software
refer to the Service Manual FUSE - Fast Update Service (Automatic Software
Update), Document ID 23977509.
The latest Hotfix versions on release date of NX 3.0.21.00 / NX 4.0.21.00 are
available on the NX Starter Kit DVD 3.
Purpose: All configuration and image data are preserved during the software upgrade. In case of
DR systems preserving the configuration data depends on the availability of the correct
XRDI version.
To be able to restore the system in case something goes wrong during the software
upgrade, an export of following data is recommended:
• Configuration data
• Dose Monitoring Statistics
• Image Data.
(1) To create a safety data backup, follow the instructions in chapter 4, Installation
and Configuration Appendices, section “Data Export for Clean Installation and
Upgrade Installation”.
(1) Copy the NX component installer (NX Component Installer NX<SN>.exe) to the
D partition of the NX.
If you did not create an NX component installer, following steps need to be made
manually:
(1) Load the required hotfixes manually. For instructions refer to section 4.1.
IMPORTANT:
• Make sure the latest Hotfixes are installed as described in section 4.1.
• At least 4 GB of free disk space on the C partition is required to run the installer.
• Make sure the NX workstation is connected to a network before starting the
upgrade. If no network is available, the installation will be aborted. Installation will
fail if the network is unplugged during installation of the NX Software.
NOTE:
With the following procedure the license is loaded during activation. In NX upgrade
procedures before NX 2.0.8800 / 3.0.8800 first the license was loaded via License
Manager, then the NX was activated.
Reason for loading the license file during activation: The license (ALF) file for NX
3.0.21.00 / NX 4.0.21.00 is not compatible with the “old” License Manager of NX below
NX 2.0.8800 / 3.0.8800. If the license is loaded before activation, following error is
displayed: “There is an error in XML document”.
Exception: For upgrades starting from NX 2.0.8800 / 3.0.8800 the error does not
appear. NX 2.0.8800 / 3.0.8800 and higher versions use a compatible license
manager.
(1) In case of software upgrade starting from NX 3.0.8950: The automatic upgrade
will fail. Use the manual upgrade procedure. Refer to section 4.2, Performing the
software upgrade to NX 21.00 manually (Required for upgrade from NX
3.0.8950).
The following upgrade scenario is possible, too:
NX 3.0.8950 NX 3.0.9000 NX 20.00 (SU1) / NX 21.00.
As a complete intermediate upgrade to NX 3.0.9000 is required, including loading
license and NX activation, the manual upgrade procedure is more efficient
however.
(2) Reboot the PC prior to starting the NX Installer. This is required to assure that
installation of third-party software (such as SQLServer) doesn't fail because
Windows has flagged pending reboots.
(3) Following step, to stop the NX backend, is only required for a NX In Room
Workstation, not for a CMS:
Start All Programs Agfa NX Service Stop NX

Any of following messages may be displayed:
Purpose: A software update (SU), if available, solves software issues and may support new
features. It is recommended to install the latest SU. The license file must match the SU
version however.
Status 10-2018: For NX 21.00 no SU is available.
IMPORTANT:
The ALF file which was installed earlier must match the version of the software which is
installed (including SU)!
(1) Select folder Service Software on Starterkit DVD1 to find the respective
installation package OR
Use the SU downloaded from the Agfa MedImg Library OR,
if you executed the “NX component installer” before the upgrade, use the SU
installer in directory C:\Agfa\Healthcare\Extra.
Purpose: The NX installer has set the NX backend account (NXWORKSTATIONUSER) back to
default values. These settings may have been previously customized out of following
reason:
Another logon account may have been set to let the NX backend connect to a remote
network drive (e.g. for non-DICOM RIS) to overcome access right problems.
1.3.7 Adapting Digitizer Recovery Exposure Types in the Configuration Tool (if
required)
Purpose: To check the Digitizer Recovery Exposure Types configuration is required for software
upgrades from < NX 2.0.8600 / 3.0.8600 only.
For details see: "Application Note - Functional Changes in NX 2.0.8500 / 3.0.8500 and

Help installation on the system.
(6) After finishing the installation, the NX viewer has to be restarted to be able to use
the NX online help. Inform the customer about the usage of the NX Online Help.
NOTE:
• Installing the Online Help (any language) will also install a special Thai font on the
NX Workstation that is required to read the Thai Online Help. This implies that
browsing Thai Online Help directly from the CD will not work before the
Online Help is actually installed on the Workstation.
• If required, the font can be manually installed by copying this file from the CD into
the Windows font folder: C:\…\Nx Online Help\Windows\Fonts\Angsd___.ttf
Purpose: The preventive maintenance indicator reminds the user on an upcoming preventive
maintenance of the CR or DR system.
This should be activated only in accordance with the service manager.
Purpose Touch mode is a new feature that was introduced with NX 2.0.8900 / 3.0.8900 for
touch monitors. This improves operation in the editing screen.
For more information to touch mode refer to the Application Note - Functional Changes
in NX 2.0.8900 - 3.0.8900 Functions, Document ID 47340162.
