❖ So as discussed earlier this wheel speed sensor component is mostly
located on each wheel equipped with a brake assembly.
❖ There are two types of systems used in wheel speed sensors , there is
the AC sensor system and a DC sensor system. They are essentially alike
except for the wheel-speed sensors and one circuit in the control unit.
❖ AC sensor - The AC sensor is a variable-reluctance AC generator in the
axle of the landing gear that uses a permanent magnet surrounded by
a pickup coil. The outside of this sensor has four equally spaced poles
with teeth cut into their periphery.
❖ DC sensor - The DC sensor is essentially a small, permanent-magnet
direct-current generator, which produces a voltage output directly
proportional to the rotational speed of its armature. With this type of
sensor, there is no need for a converter in the control unit. There also is
less danger of interference with the brakes due to the induction of stray
voltage into the sensing system
❖ The DC sensor signal also controls the unit flows, it flows through a coil
around the armature of the flapper valve. This armature is free to pivot
and is centered between two permanent magnets.

❖ An anti-skid control valve uses a torque motor controlled flapper in the

first stage of the valve to build or relieve pressure to the break.
❖ Anti-skid control valves are fast-acting, electrically controlled by
hydraulic valves that respond to the input from the anti-skid control
unit.
❖ There is one control valve in each brake assembly.
❖ A torque motor uses the input from the valve driver to adjust the
position of a flapper between 2 nozzles. By moving the flapper closer to
one nozzle or the other, pressure is developed in the second stage of
the valve.
❖ These pressures act on a spool that is positioned to build or reduce
pressure to the brake by opening the blocking fluid ports.
❖ The control unit or control box can be regarded as the brain of the
anti-skid system.
❖ Three main functions are to generate electrical signals usable by the
control valve, to regulate brake pressure to prevent a skid during
landing deceleration and to prevent application of brake pressure prior
to touchdown.
❖ It receives signals from each of the wheel sensors.
❖ Comparative circuits are used to determine if any of the signals
indicates .A skid is imminent and occuring on a particular wheel.
❖ The control unit may or may not have external test switches and status
indicating lights.
❖ Located mostly in the avionics bay of the aircraft.
