Q2. Production processes emission

tracking
Question:
Do you track your air emissions from
productions?
Required Data:
• Process selected
• Emissions from this source?
• Emissions source title
• Tracking
• Pollutants
• Regulations/permits

Air Emissions – Level 1 19

Q2. Production processes emission tracking

• An inventory of emissions to air for all sources of
emissions from production processes.
• Records (test records or estimations) detailing how
the quantity of emissions reported were calculated.

©Leadership & Sustainability Karin Ekberg GmbH

Air Emissions – Level 1 20

Q2. Production processes emission tracking – how to

calculate / estimate
1. Inventory based (Potential to Emit, PTE)
2. Inventory based (Potential to Emit + Mass Balance
and / or abatement
3. Emissions Factor-based (Factory or Offsite Testing)

©Leadership & Sustainability Karin Ekberg GmbH

Air Emissions – Level 1 21

Q2. Production processes emission tracking –

example 1
VOCs emission calculation from spot cleaners
Example:
• VOCs Content: 370 g/l (from VOC test report of
spot cleaner)
• 2020 Consumption of spot cleaner: 500 l
500l x 370g/l = 185,000g = 185kg

Result: 185 kg VOC in 2020

©Leadership & Sustainability Karin Ekberg GmbH

Air Emissions – Level 1 22

Q2. Production processes emission tracking – example 2

• The facility has worked 300 days in 2020.
• The facility’s VOCs and PM results are in dyeing area:
o VOCs: 0.5 mg/m3
o PM: 0.5 mg/m3
• Air flow: 30,000 m3/day
Please calculate the facility’s PM and VOCs fugitive
emission in 2020.

0.5 (mg/m3/day)*300(day/year)*30,000 (m3/day)

= 4,500,000 mg/year = 4.5 kg in 2020

Air Emissions – Level 1 23

Q3. Refrigerants
Question:
Did your facility add additional refrigerants to any
existing equipment during this reporting year?
• Refrigerants
• Quantity of refrigerant added
• Unit of measure
• Tracking method
• Plan for fixing the leak

Air Emissions – Level 1 24

Q3. Refrigerants – Additional Information

Reporting Refrigerant Data in the FEM:
Do :
✓ Review source data against aggregated totals to
ensure it is accurate

✓ Ensure the most recent and updated versions of data

tracking spreadsheets are being used and that all
automated calculations/formulas are correct

✓ Ensure the proper units are reported and verify any

unit conversions from source data to reported data

✓ Review any assumption or estimation

methodology/calculations to ensure accuracy

Air Emissions – Level 1 25

Q3. Refrigerants
Do not:
 Report data that is not accurate

 Report estimated data if it is not supported by

verifiable and reasonable accurate estimation

Air Emissions – Level 1 26

Q3. Refrigerants
How this will be verified:
• The initial data collection processes and data sources

• The process and tools used to aggregate the data

• If any inconsistencies or errors are noted, the

reported information must be corrected where
possible and detailed comments should be included
in the Verification Data field

Q4. Control devices – Operations

Question:
Does your facility have control devices or abatement
processes for on-site point-source air emissions? If yes,
select all sources of emissions that have abatement
processes.
• Source
• Control device/ abatement process
• Frequency of monitoring
Definition of Point Source Emissions – air flow which is controlled in some way and
released into the atmosphere from a single source such as stack. These emissions can
be facilities related, such as emissions from boilers, or process related, such as exhaust
systems for volatile chemical use.

Air Emissions – Level 1 28

Q5. Control devices – Production process

Question:
Does your facility have control devices or abatement
processes for on-site fugitive/non-point source air emissions?
If yes, select all fugitive/non-point sources of air emissions
that have control devices or abatement processes.
• Source
• Control devices/abatement process
• Frequency of monitoring

Definition of Non-Point Source or Fugitive Emissions – for the Higg FEM,

these sources of air emissions are those that are released into the general
indoor or outdoor environment. These types of emissions are typically
process related such as screen printing, spot cleaning, dyeing, etc.).
