ARTICLES Card 1

1. My neighbor is a photographer; let’s ask him for an advice about color films.
2. The youngest boy has just started going to school; The eldest boy is at in college.
3. She lives on the top floor of an old house. When the wind blows, all the windows rattle.
4. We had a fish and chips for lunch. That doesn’t sound a very interesting lunch.
5. I had a very bad night; I didn’t sleep a wink.
6. The darkness doesn’t worry the cats; can see in the dark.
7. My little boys say that they want to be spacemen, but most of them will probably end up in less
dramatic jobs.
8. Do you know the time? Yes, the clock in the hall has just struck nine. Then it isn’t the time to get
yet.

10. I am on night duty. When you go to bed, I go to work.
11. A travel agent would give you information about hotels.
12. We’d better go by taxi – if we can get a taxi at such an hour as 2 a.m.

14. It costs fifty-five and a half pence and I’ve only got a fifty pence piece. You can buy by cheque
here. But can I write a cheque for 55 and a half pence?
15. I’m not a wage-earner; I’m a self-employed man. I have a business of my own. Then you’re not a
worker; you’re a capitalist!
16. Peter’s at the office but you could get him on the phone. There’s a telephone box just round the
corner.
17. A friend of mine is expecting a baby. If it’s a girl she’s going to be called Etheldreda. What name
to give a girl!
18. I have an hour and a half for lunch.
19. I hope you have a lovely time and good weather. But I’m not going for holiday; I’m going on
business.
20. He got bronchitis and was taken to hospital. I expect they”ll send him home at the end of the
week.
21. He first went to sea in a Swedish ship, so as well as learning navigation he had to learn
Swedish.
22. On Sunday my father stays in bed till ten o’clock, reading the Sunday papers.
23. I have a headache and sore throat. I think I’ve got a cold.
24. If you go by train you can have quite a comfortable journey, but make sure you get the express,
not the train that stops at all the stations.
25. Then he gets up, puts on old clothes, has breakfast and starts work in the garden.
