PROBLEM SET 2

CE124 WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING

I. PROBLEM SOLVING. Solve the problems below. Write the complete solution and box the final
answer.

Question Question
#
1 The section of a storm drain tunnel is as shown. During the heavy storm, the water surface is
5.0m above the semicircular section. If n = 0.02 and the slope of the channel is 0.009, calculate
the discharge. (5pts)

8.50 m

2. A 800 mm radius sewer pipe is laid on a slope of 0.001 and has a roughness coefficient n= 0.012,
was found to be 7/8 full. Determine the discharge through the pipe. (5pts)
3. A parabolic canal has a top width of 5 m and depth of 2.5 m. Determine the critical depth and
critical velocity when the flow is 5 cu.m. per s. (5pts)
4. A circular sewer pipe 2.0m in diameter is laid on a slope of 2m per kilometer. The pipe is made of
concrete with n=0.013. Determine the discharge is the pipe is 2/3 full. (5pts)
5. Determine the maximum flow through a 1.0m diameter concrete culvert which is laid on a slope of
0.009. Use n=0.012 (5pts)
6. A 300-mm diameter concrete pipe is laid on a slope of 1m per 500m and is required to carry water
at the rate 0.05 cu.m. / s. Determine the normal depth of flow. Use roughness coefficient n=0.012.
(5pts)
7. The water cross-sectional area of a culvert is 18.36 sq.m. and wetted perimeter is 12.56m. If the
flow is 50 cu.m. per s and n=0.012, find the slope. (5pts)
8. A reinforced concrete drainage outfall 2m in diameter was constructed with uniform slope of 2 per
thousand and discharges to the sea as shown in the figure. During the recent heavy downpour, the
peak flow in the drainage pipe was 2.05 cu.m. per s. Assuming steady flow and n=0.015, determine
the distance between manholes 1 and 3. (10points)
Q=2.05 cu.m/s
