Motion in One Dimension

The study of motion is called kinematics. Displacement of a point particle:

4x = x2 − x1

where x1 is the position at time t1 and x2 is the position at time t2, t2 > t1. The
average velocity, Tipler figure 2-4, is defined by:

4x x2 − x1
vav = =
4t t2 − t1

The average velocity can take positive or negative values. The average speed is
defined by:
total distance 4s
Average speed = = ≥0
total time 4t

1
Instantaneous velocity, Tipler figure 2-5:

4x x − x2 d x
v(t) = lim = lim =
4t→0 4t t2 →t t − t2 dt
This is the slope of the tangent of the curve x(t) at t and called derivative. Note:
t = t1, x = x1 of the difference notation. The instantaneous speed is the absolute
value |v(t)| of the instantaneous velocity.

Relative velocity: If a particle p moves with velocity vpA relative to

a coordinate system A, which moves with velocity vAB relative to a coordinate
system B, the velocity of p with respect to B is

vpB = vpA + vAB

This equation is only valid for velocities |v| c, where c is the speed of light.

2
Acceleration: Acceleration is the rate of change of the instantaneous
velocity. The average acceleration is defined by:

4v v2 − v1
aav = =
4t t2 − t1

The instantaneous acceleration is:

4v v − v2 d v d2x
a(t) = lim = lim = = 2
4t→0 4t t2 →t t − t2 dt dt
