Course Title: The Contemporary World


Course Description:
This course introduces students to the contemporary world by examining the multifaceted
phenomenon of globalization. Using the various disciplines of the social sciences, it examines the
economic, social, political, technological, and other transformations that have created an
increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of peoples and places around the globe. To this
end, the course provides an overview of the various debates in global governance, development,
and sustainability. Beyond exposing the student to the world outside the Philippines, it seeks to
inculcate a sense of global citizenship and global ethical responsibility.

Course Learning Outcomes:


1. Distinguish different interpretations of and approaches to globalization.
2. Describe the emergence of global economic, political, social, and cultural systems.
3. Analyze the various contemporary drivers of globalization.
4. Understand the issues confronting the nation-state.
5. Analyze contemporary news events in the context of globalization.
6. Analyze global issues in relation to Filipinos and the Philippines.
7. Write a research paper with proper citations on a topic related to globalization.
8. Articulate personal positions on various global issues.
9. Identify the ethical implications of global citizenship.

Classroom Rules and Reminders:


These rules and reminders are applicable both for online and offline modalities.
1. For our schedule, our online class (synchronous meetings) will be once a
week. For our asynchronous meetings, this will be your time to answer and
finish the learning task in the respected module presented. For online
Modality (Option 2), attendance will be checked as part of our grading system.

2. For Offline modality (Option 1), you are required to report to me at least once
a month to ensure maximum participation in the modules and to give you the
complete set of modules during the term. However, your punctuality to pass
the requirements will replace the attendance part in our grading system.

3. For online modality students, I strongly recommend you to pass all your
requirements on our GC LAMP. And for offline modality students, you will
pass your activities at the satellite office. Put it in a envelop together with your
printed or written learning tasked accomplished. Write your name, our subject
and your instructor. Please separate your activities according to your subjects.

4. DEADLINES should always be followed. Student/s who are not able to pass
the requirement during deadline should inform the teacher during the set due
date. Failure to comply will result to a penalty. As mentioned in your
orientation, any missed activities during midterms will not be accepted during
final terms.

5. I am only giving a PASSING or FAILING grade. No INC, CF or NFE. Take


note that we are allowed to give a student a failing grade if he/she is not
complying.

6. Opening of cameras during synchronous meetings are highly appreciated but


IT IS NOT REQUIRED. It is only suggested if you will speak or answer or
ask a question about the topic.

7. Compilation of modules will be sent before the start of the first lesson. All
synchronous meetings will be recorded and compilation of recordings will be
uploaded in the link assigned.

8. Examinations will be asynchronous but it has time limits. It can be essays


activities or portfolio or traditional exam. Final Examination will be a cover-
to-cover multiple choice exam. Failure to do so will have penalties as
mentioned above.

9. Questions and Clarifications will only be entertained on MESSENGER


GROUPCHAT.

10. I strongly recommend you to join our Groupchat as most of the
