1. What Type of Eater Are You?

SECTION I. Read the passage. Then answer the questions that follow. Highlight the correct
answer in BOLD. (1 point each. Total: 5 points)

Want to have a healthy weight? We all know that dieting doesn’t work very well. Most people
who diet gain back the weight that they lost. Many experts agree: If you eat healthy foods every
day, you probably won’t gain weight. One way to do this is to learn what type of eater you are
and then use good diet and eating strategies for your type. Here are three main types of eaters;
these eaters can get into dieting trouble!

The Unconscious Eater

Unconscious eaters don’t know what they are eating. They don’t pay attention. They eat in the
car. They eat while they watch TV. They forget to eat. These people might choose unhealthy
foods or overeat. What should unconscious eaters do? They should always eat breakfast. They
should prepare healthy snacks such as fruit, vegetables, and yogurt and take them to work or to
school. They shouldn’t eat out; they should eat relaxing meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—
at home.

The Snacker
Snackers eat a lot, and they eat all the time. They eat snacks, so they aren’t hungry at
mealtime. When they snack, they don’t count calories, so they may get too many. And snacks
usually have a lot of empty calories; they have a lot of fat and sugar. What should snackers do?
First, these eaters should get at least one good meal a day, a meal with fruits, vegetables, and
protein. And when these people snack, they should choose nutritious foods, not unhealthy
foods.

The Big Eater

Big eaters love food. They also eat a lot. Because they eat a lot, they do get nutrients, such as
vitamins and protein. But they usually get too many calories, too, so they can gain weight. Big
eaters need to learn to eat smaller portions—amounts—of food. They should ask: “Am I really
hungry right now? They should also ask: “Do I need four chocolate chip cookies? Can I eat
just two?”

2. San Francisco: A Livable City

SECTION III. Read the passage. Then answer the questions that follow.
(1 point each. Total: 5 points)

Life is difficult in some big cities. There often aren’t enough jobs. Big cities are crowded, the
air can be dirty, and there is crime. But life in some big cities isn’t so terrible. Some big cities are
livable. A livable city is an easy place to live. San Francisco is one example.
San Francisco is a “small” big city. A small big city is large in population but small in area.
There are 744,230 people in San Francisco, and the city is 49 square miles, so there are about
17,000 people per square mile. This is a high population density. (In the United States, only
New York City has a larger population density.) But San Francisco doesn’t feel crowded. It
has water on three sides. The San Francisco Bay is on the east and north sides, and the Pacific
Ocean is on the west side. This makes the city feel open and not crowded.
Also, San Francisco is a city of hills. There are 42 hills in San Francisco. A hill is land with a
height of over 100 feet (30 meters). Some hills are in neighborhoods; others are in parks. Many
of San Francisco’s hills have wonderful views. From some hills, there are views of tall
downtown buildings. From others, there are beautiful views of the water.
San Francisco is also a city of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is different from the
others. One neighborhood is North Beach. North Beach is an old Italian neighborhood. It has
Italian grocery stores, restaurants, and beautiful churches. Another San Francisco neighborhood
is Chinatown. In Chinatown, there are many Chinese businesses. There are even pagodas.
Pagodas are traditional Chinese buildings. Another neighborhood, the Inner Sunset, has people
from many different places: Chinese, Koreans, and Pacific Islanders. Interesting neighborhoods,
hills, and views of water all make San Francisco a livable city.
