BBC NEWS (bbc.com) – Harry Styles' hit As It Was has become the longest-running number one on the US
singles chart by a British artist.
The song has scored a 15th week on top of the Billboard Hot 100, breaking the record previously held jointly
by Mark Ronson and Sir Elton John. Their hits, Uptown Funk and Candle In The Wind respectively, each spent 14
weeks in the chart's top spot. Styles is also currently at number one on the US cinema box office chart with his film
Don't Worry Darling.
After 15 weeks at the top of the singles rankings, As It Was has become the fourth longest-running number
one in US chart history - and the longest by one single artist. Old Town Road by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus
holds the overall record of 19 weeks. Despacito by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber, and One Sweet Day
by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, each reigned for 16 weeks.
As It Was spent 10 weeks at number one in the UK between April and June. Meanwhile, the former One
Direction star has followed in the footsteps of Eminem and Prince by becoming one of the few artists to have topped
the music and box office charts simultaneously.
Mixed reviews for Styles' new film Don't Worry Darling, directed by his partner Olivia Wilde, did not put
fans off going to cinemas.
The movie, which also stars Florence Pugh and Chris Pine, took a healthy $19.2m (£17.7m) on its opening
weekend in North America. The film has enjoyed significant publicity in recent weeks, thanks to media reports of
behind-the-scenes drama and off-screen feuds during its production.

As the drive towards immersive virtual worlds, or "metaverses," gathers pace, personalized digital avatars
have become more pervasive thanks to games like Fortnite and Roblox. But on the online platform Second Life, users
have been able to create and customize their own digital appearances for almost two decades. And it was here that, in
2017, a body-shaming scandal laid bare an uncomfortable truth: Our real-life beauty standards will, invariably, follow
us into the metaverse.
The incident began when an in-game fashion brand allegedly sent out offensive fat-shaming messages on a
group channel. The label then embarked on a bizarre crusade against plus-size women. At its virtual store, which sold
digital clothing aimed at thin avatars, the brand erected a "no fat chicks" sign alongside an image of a model wearing a
crop top marked "no fat."
Debate in the Second Life community ensued, and fuller-figured avatars began arriving at the store in protest.
Some brandished customized placards ("I love you skinny, I love you fat," read one, "diversity is all of that!") while
staging a sit-in demonstration.
"People were saying, 'You can be anything, you can be as beautiful as you want — or can afford — to be, so
why are you choosing to be fat?'" he recalled in a video interview from California. "They got angry. (edition.cnn.com)

As online learning becomes more common and more resources are converted to digital form, some people
have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and, in their place, everyone should be given an iPad with an
e-reader subscription.
Proponents of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money because libraries are expensive to
maintain. They also believe it will encourage more people to read because they won’t have to travel to a library to get
a book; they can simply click on what they want to read and read it from wherever they are. They could also access
more materials because libraries won’t have to buy physical copies of books; they can simply rent out as many digital
copies as they need.
However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First, digital books and resources are
associated with less learning and more problems than print resources. A study done on tablet vs book reading found
that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, retain 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what they read
compared to people who read the same information in print. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown
to cause numerous health problems, including blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, at much
higher instances than reading print does. People who use tablets and mobile devices excessively also have a higher
incidence of more serious health issues such as fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and
muscle strain. I know that whenever I read from my e-reader for too long, my eyes begin to feel tired and my neck
hurts. We should not add to these problems by giving people, especially young people, more reasons to look at
screens.
While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to spend
even more time looking at digital screens, despite the myriad issues surrounding them. It would also end access to
many of the benefits of libraries that people have come to rely on. In many areas, libraries are such an important part
of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object. (blog.prepscholar.com)

Every government collects taxes from its citizens in order to be able to fulfill its responsibility of providing
proper roads, water, sanitation facilities, health care and education to the public. The government would need
billions of dollars to carry out all its duties and it is due to the tax payers’ money that all this work is done. So, citizens
are expected and mandated by law to pay the appropriate taxes. They have to pay taxes to their local state or county
governments as well as to the federal government in certain instances.
Many people do not like the idea of paying taxes, of course. They hope that they could keep all their earnings
to themselves. They feel that it is not fair for the government to grab a large percentage of their hard-earned money.
They sometimes compare the tax percentages in other countries and feel that the amount of money they pay is too high
when compared to the other nations.
But all said and done, taxes are extremely essential for the smooth running of a nation. Without taxes, the
government would not be able to fulfill its obligations. It is necessary for us to get a proper perspective of why taxes
are inevitable. Although we do not like the fact that we have to part with our earnings to support the government, we
still have to see this as a benefit. In fact, we are paying the government to provide all the infrastructural facilities that
we enjoy in our day to day life. If we can see taxes as a fee that we spend on ourselves for our own benefit, much like
the money we pay at a restaurant to have a nice meal, we would find it easier to pay our taxes without feeling the
pinch. (writemypapers.com)

Lynx, (genus Lynx), any of four species of short-tailed cats (family Felidae) found in
the forests of Europe, Asia, and North America. The Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) and the bobcat (L. rufus) live in
North America. The Eurasian lynx (L. lynx) and the Iberian lynx (L. pardinus) are their European counterparts. The
Iberian lynx is the most endangered feline; as of 2013 possibly fewer than 300 individuals remained in the
mountainous scrubland of southern Spain.
Lynx are long-legged, large-pawed cats with tufted ears, hairy soles, and a broad, short head. The coat, which
forms a bushy ruff on the neck, is tawny to cream in colour and somewhat mottled with brown and black; the tail tip
and ear tufts are black. In winter the fur is dense and soft, with hairs up to 10 cm (4 inches) long, and is sought by
humans for trimming garments. Most lynx range in size from about 80 to 120 cm (about 32 to 47 inches) long, without
the 10- to 20-cm (4- to 8-inch) tail, and stand about 60 cm (24 inches) tall at the shoulder. Weight typically ranges
from 10 to 20 kg (22 to 44 pounds), though Eurasian lynx are often larger. In all species males are larger than females.
Nocturnal and silent except during the mating season, lynx live alone or in small groups. They climb and
swim well and feed on birds and small mammals. The bobcat and the Eurasian lynx will take larger prey such as deer.

William James Sidis was born on April 1, 1898. He would go on to become the greatest child prodigy in
recorded history. Sidis's childhood feats are to this day rivaled only by those of Goethe and John Stuart Mill. His story
will never cease to fascinate those who wish to understand the upper limits of human potential; his life will never
cease to instruct those who wish to understand genius. Yet, sadly, his life is shrouded in falsehood, and to this day, he
remains more myth than man. He is as much a victim of his own genius as he is of the attention it attracted. He is as
much a victim of his own emotional immaturity as he is of the immaturity of the society in which he came of age.
Hounded by journalists since he was a child, misrepresented or openly lied about in the newspapers of the
time, expected to perform on command like a zoo animal, Sidis's childhood was considerably different from his
predecessors or his contemporaries. In ways his circumstances were better than those of his fellow prodigies, in others,
they were much worse.
Sidis had plenty of loyal friends. All of them found his ideas stimulating and his personality likeable. Very
few people know as much about the Indian background of our social customs as he. His manuscript study of it is
worthy textbook material and very readable. He knew dozens of stories from Boston's history and told them with
relish. He recently submitted a plan for post-war Boston.
But William Sidis had one great cause—the right of an individual in this country to follow his chosen way of
life. He had never been able to do this for himself, first because his father made him an example for psychological
theories; then because the public, through newspaper articles, insisted that he was a "genius," abnormal and erratic.
Whenever Sidis saw interference by individuals or governments, with anyone's "life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness," he fought it any way he could. He won a long legal fight against a nationally known publication on the
ground that it had invaded his privacy. Bill Sidis was a quiet man who enjoyed the normal things of life. His friends
respected him and enjoyed his company. I am glad to have been one of his friends. (sidis.net)

As the United States prepares for pivotal midterm elections, a raft of conflicting headlines — layoffs at Big
Tech, volatile stock markets, a central bank hell-bent on bringing the pain to tackle inflation — are muddying the
SOAL LATIHAN LITERASI BAHASA INGGRIS
answer to a simple question: Is the economy improving? Maybe. Maybe not. If you’re frustrated by that, you’re not
alone.
On the jobs front, there’s great news for anyone looking for work. The US economy added 261,000 jobs in
October, about 60,000 more than economists had expected. Unemployment remains at a historically low 3.7%, and
there are nearly two open jobs for every one person looking.
But that tightness in the labor market is bad news for the Federal Reserve, which worries that the easier it is
for workers to press for higher wages, the harder it will be to tamp down prices that have remained stubbornly high for
more than a year. By aggressively hiking interest rates, the Fed has sought to introduce some slack into a tight labor
market. Slack, meaning less job growth, less wage growth or even layoffs. “The Fed is likely frustrated,” wrote Rucha
Vankudre, a senior economist for Lightcast.
It’s like when you put money in a vending machine only to have it eat your change and withhold your snack,
Vankudre says. “You put money in, and the food moved a little bit but it didn’t fall. And then you kicked it and put
more money in, and it still didn’t fall. It kind of feels like what the Fed is doing.”
Even though the US economy is not, technically, in a recession, nearly 75% of likely voters in a recent CNN
poll said they feel as though it is.
Wages are up, but not enough to take the sting off high prices of necessities like food, fuel and shelter.
For those invested in stocks, it’s not been a great year, either, and that’s especially hard on retirees who are
living off their investments.
Economists will get fresh insight into the state of inflation next week with the October CPI reading on
Thursday. But if there’s good news in that report, it will have come two days too late to sway voters one way or
another. (edition.cnn.com)

Starting college is an exciting step in one’s life, but it can definitely be stressful or scary at times, especially if
you had decided to study abroad. For those awaiting your freshman year this fall, here are some tips on how to make
the most out of your first year at university. Keep these tips in mind once you start classes, but more importantly don’t
forget to have fun along the way!
Remember that every person you meet in college has something to offer you. You will meet hundreds new
people at college – classmates, professors, advisors, recruiters, staff at campus, etc. Naturally, you won’t become
friends with everyone, but we recommend networking with as many people as possible, especially when you’re new at
the university.
Be organized and make deadlines your priority. Get a calendar, whether an online app or good old paper diary,
and write down all your deadlines, exams, group meetings and school events. You will have dozens of different
assignments during your college years and the sooner you find a routine that fits you, the better. Make it your priority
to never hand in an assignment late. Being diligent and dependable is always a plus!
Never. Ever. Plagiarize. Don’t even come close to plagiarizing. Learning how to write is one of the core skills
you will be developing at university. Don’t ruin the learning process with copying and pasting words from a different
source. Instead, find enough various resources, learn how to cite sources properly, and develop your own writing
routine. You can also make use of one of the many programs and apps that detect plagiarism in your work.
Find a note-taking system that works well for you. Taking notes with a laptop might be faster and easier than
writing notes by hand, but writing down notes with good old pen might help you remember the content of the lecture
better than if you typed them. Find out what works best for you in each class so you can make the most out of your
notes once revising or studying. Read more about when you should take notes by hand in our previous article.
Always back up your files. There is nothing worse than having your laptop broke down in the middle of
finishing your unsaved essay or losing a whole file of documents.
Meet with your academic advisor on a regular basis. Connect with your school’s academic advisor as well as a
career center. Both your career advisor and academic advisor might play a valuable role in your college years and in
your future decisions. Also, go to most career fairs in the campus or the city you live in, whether you are looking for a
job or just want to network with recruiters.

Organic food is very popular these days. It can also be very expensive. Some organic food costs twice as
much as non-organic food. Parents of young children, and even some pet owners, will pay high prices for organic food
if they think it's healthier. But many others think organic food is just a waste of money.
There is one main difference between organic and non-organic food. Organic farms do not
use agricultural chemicals such as pesticides that stop insects from damaging crops. In many countries foods that
claim to be organic must have special labels that guarantee they're grown organically.
Some people think organic also means "locally grown", and originally this was true. But over time organic
farming has become big business, with many organic foods now being grown by large agricultural companies that sell
their products far from where they're grown. Processed food made with organic ingredients has also become more
popular. At first, only small companies produced these products. But as demand overtook supply, big food companies
that had been selling non-organic products for many years also began selling organic products. Small organic food
companies found it difficult to compete with these big companies, and many didn't stay in business much longer.
