II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Holistic is relating to the idea that things should be studied as a whole. On the other hand,
health is defined by World Health Organization (WHO) as a state of complete physical, mental, social
well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Health has been an integral factor in every human being. Our health decides our ability to
become productive in everything that we do. Thus, health has to be developed, monitored and
maximized in its fullest capability. Health therefore needs to be emphasized in every human being,
young or old. Health is a state of complete physical, mental, or intellectual, emotional, social, moral-
spiritual, and environmental well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is a resource
for everyday life, not the object of living, and is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal
resources as well as physical capabilities.
As an adolescent, your personal health is your responsibility. It is up to you to choose what to
eat, what to drink or what activities you want to do every day. Therefore, you are responsible in
monitoring your BMI and your daily activities.
Nowadays, health focuses on wellness. It is a positive approach that includes all the dimension
of health: physical, mental, emotional, and social and moral- spiritual. Being healthy, means having a
balance of the dimension of health. This result attaining holistic health.
There are six dimensions of health:

Physical Health is a state of well-being when all internal and external body parts, organs, tissues, and cells
can function properly as they are supposed to function properly as they are supposed to function. In
incudes being physically fit, eating nutritiously, and getting adequate rest and sleep.

Mental Health refers to the ability to accept new ideas and experiences that can improve life, family, and
environment. A mentally healthy person is aware of his/her own abilities, can cope normal stresses in life,
able to work regularly and productively, and is also able to contribute for the improvement of community.

Social Health has something to do with interacting with others such as socializing with friends, relatives,
and others in a desirable way. It refers to how well you get along with other people, how other people
react and how you interact with social institutions, it involves your ability to form satisfying interpersonal
relationships with others.

Emotional Health includes the feelings, thoughts, social behavior, and identity. It helps a person cope with
stress successfully; feel good about oneself and others; accept reality and appreciate consequences;
maintain self-control, self-discipline, and emotional stability; accept social roles and responsibility for
behavior; and establish, comply and maintain commitments.
Moral-spiritual Health is the inner strength to live. It refers to your religion, principles, personal beliefs,
values and faith. It involves the quality of personal relationships or love of nature. It involves a sense of
meaning and purpose and that you are in harmony with your purpose in life.

Environmental Health means the understanding of the effect to ourselves of the air, water, and the land
that surrounds us. This stresses importance in recognizing the impact of environmental and human-made
hazards and the ability to find ways on how to protect ourselves and the ecological systems against these
hazards.
Interrelatedness of Health Dimensions
The six dimensions of holistic health are connected. An individual is affected physically. If food
and shelter are not fully satisfied. This person will also be affected emotionally as she/he may feel in
adequate, insecure and unsafe. And how will this affect the mental health of a person? Anxiety may
develop when a person is worrying about his/ her condition. Relationship with family, friends and
others may suffer also when a person is not contented and his/ her longing for love and affection is
not met. When the physical, mental, emotional, social needs are not satisfied, a person may resort to
unethical behavior to satisfy his/ her basic needs.
It is very clear that each dimension affects the other. The dimensions are equally important to
attain wellness or good health. These are like pieces of puzzle that need to be fitted together for
meaningful health dimensions interrelationship
