Subject and Generic Physical Education/9-12 grades

Level:
Lesson Focus: Skill to be taught: measure their heartrate

Lesson Plan
Components
NASPE Standard(s) Standard 1 The physically literate individual demonstrates
competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
Standard 2 The physically literate individual applies knowledge of
concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement
and performance.
Standard 3 The physically literate individual demonstrates the
knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing
level of physical activity and fitness.
Standard 4 The physically literate individual exhibits responsible

Standard 5 The physically literate individual recognizes the value
of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression
and/or social interaction.
Specific Learning Psychomotor Objective: TSWBAT perform physical activity in
Outcome(s) order to collect data in regard to their heart rate.
Cognitive Objective: TSWBAT measure and record their pulse
rate by counting their pulse within 15-second intervals.
Affective Objective: TSW do the activities at the same time as the
rest of the class.
Focus Statement or I can take my pulse for 15 seconds.
“I Can” Statement I can do the activities listed on the worksheet.
I can predict what I think my pulse rate will be.
I can allow my pulse to return to a resting rate before continuing to
a new activity.
Academic Vocabulary CUES:
(content specific) Ring finger
Middle finger
Inside of your wrist
Pulse
Radial pulse point
Slow music
Fast music
Breathe deeply
Walk
Jumping jacks
Sit-ups
Procedures Get Ready to Learn
 TTW ask students the question, “does anyone know how to
measure their heart rate?”.
 TTW hand out the “Your Pulse Rate” worksheet.
 TTW demonstrate how to measure the heart rate by wrist.
Make sure students know not to use their thumb because it has
a pulse of its own.
 TSW find their pulse by using their middle or ring finger. Make
sure students know not to use their thumb because it has a
pulse of its own.
 TSW count their pulse in using 15-second intervals then
multiple that number by four. This will determine how many
times their hearts beat in one minute.
 TSW write that number on their worksheet.
Instruction
 TTW pose the questions “Do you think your heartrate always
stays the same or does it change?” and “What might cause the
heart rate to change?”(physical activity, anxiety, walking uphill,
excitement, etc.)
 TTW supply the class with the "Heart Rate Observations"
worksheets.
 TTW make sure the students understand the instructions of the
worksheet.
 TSW first finish the prediction portion of the worksheet.
Guided Practice
 TSW will sit quietly and listen to slow music. After one minute
they will measure and record their heart rate.
 TTW lead the class through all six activities.
 TTW tell the students when to inhale and exhale on the deep
breathing activity.
Guided Independent Practice
 TTW ensure that students have enough time for their heart
rates to return to a resting rate before beginning each activity.
 TSW stay seated in order for their heart rate to slow more
quickly.
Closure
 TSW use the final portion of class to complete the bottom half
of the worksheet.
Materials include Materials needed for the lesson include the Resource:
Resource  Your Pulse Rate worksheet
 Heart Rate Observations worksheet
 Pen or pencil
 Lesson adapted from article
Assessment  Observation/Teacher
 Both worksheets
Differentiated Enrichment (For those who DO “get it”; then what?
Instruction
 TSW continue to perform different activities of their choosing
and measure their pulse.
Accommodation/Modifications (IEP, ELL)
 TTW make exceptions for students who cannot perform
strenuous exercises due to health issues, such as asthma.
Remediation/Reteach/Intervention (For those who DO NOT
“get it”; then what?
 TTW will share this 2-minute video if students are having
trouble understanding how to measure their pulse.
