Context 1
Mamta loves being amidst plants
and trees. One day when she was
standing outside her house, she
saw something moving on the
branches, someone floating in the
sky and something crawling
through the grass. She liked it so
much that she asked her mother
what they were! Her mother
answered by singing a nice poem
about it. Mamta has sent that
interesting poem for all of us.
Let’s read and find out whom
Mamta saw on the tree, sky and
grass that day.

Focus
For children of Preprimary to learn
to appreciate and care for the
natural world, it is essential that
they have direct contact with it. A
‘place-based’ education brings
awareness to what is around us—
‘nearby nature’—and takes us into
the rich experience of our sensory
world and its interconnectedness.
Invariably those who are the
defenders and protectors of the
natural world are people who have
had such direct experience of nature
in their childhood. They had special
places where they, without threat or
plants, and enjoyed being around
them. Or else they were taken to
wild places of great beauty and
given the freedom to wander and
wonder about the otherness there.
Environmental education, therefore,
not only needs to inform children of
the rationality of living within our
means on this planet but also to
encourage an emotional
connection with places and their
inhabitants closer to home.
Exposure to nature with plants,
insects, animals, birds and wild and
beautiful places ought to become a
normal part of our daily experience
and affections.

1) Please read the poem given on
Worksheet 1.
2) You can read aloud the poem to
the child with voice modulation and
expression. (Check the song We’re
Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael
Rosen for the rhythm and tune.)
Now, show Worksheet 2 to your
child. Encourage the child to colour
the bugs according to the colours
mentioned in the rhyme. Let the
child sing the rhyme and sit with the
sheet and a colour box to colour the
pictures given.
3) Discuss with the child what the
poem was about. You could discuss:
 What all insects were there
in the poem?
 Which other insects have
you seen flying around these
days?
 Have you too seen the
insects going up and down
the buildings/ plants?
4) Discuss your observations with
the child. Observe the insects
around. It may be a good idea to go
