Sec. 5

C Installation of Instrument Earthing

Grounding of process control instrumentation shall be in accordance with SAEP-1636
C1
SAES-J-902. Sec. 5

Instrumentation and Control systems require a "clean" earth connection,

completely isolated from the plant main Earthing system, to prevent
SAEP-1636
C2 electrical interference on the signals being transmitted. Where Zener
Sec. 5
Diode barriers are installed in intrinsically safe circuits a similar isolated,
low resistance path to earth is required.

Instrument ground rod locations shall be checked against the relevant

SAEP-1636
C3 layout drawings to ensure correct positioning and spacing from sources of
Sec. 5
interference and installed as described above.

Instrument earth bars shall be checked against the layout drawings and
Installation detail. Particular attention shall be paid to ensure the insulators
SAEP-1636
C4 are free from cracks, the bus-bars are isolated from the electrical
Sec. 5
grounding system and clear of electrical equipment frames. The fixings
shall be checked to ensure all are secure.

Control panel earth reference bars shall be megger checked to ensure SAEP-1636
C5
they are isolated from the main electrical Earthing ground. Sec. 5

Instrument earth cables from the ground rod to the bus-bar shall be
SAEP-1636
C6 checked to ensure the insulation is intact and there is no separate path to
Sec. 5
earth.

Instrument equipment shall be inspected to ensure the Earthing facilities

and connection is as per the detail drawings. Special attention shall be
paid to the Earthing of shielded conductors. Continuity throughout the run
shall be checked, particularly where intermediate junction boxes are SAEP-1636
C7
installed, and single point Earthing shall be checked to eliminate the Sec. 5
possibility of circulating currents. Where low power equipment is installed
such as thermocouples, the earth connected shall be checked against the
detailed hook-up drawing.

Control panel earth reference bars shall be megger checked to ensure SAEP-1636
C8
they are isolated from the main electrical Earthing ground. Sec. 5

Instrument earth cables from the ground rod to the bus-bar shall be
SAEP-1636
C9 checked to ensure the insulation is intact and there is no separate path to
Sec. 5
earth.

Sec. 6.7.16.3
assembly.

When provided, AC power receptacle outlets shall be grounded using

34-SAMSS-820
D11 ground wire terminated on the receptacle grounding terminal. (e.g., A

D17
Automatic door switches for lamps are allowed. Sec. 6.7.19.6
E Testing
The earth electrode resistance shall be checked by the "fall-of-potential"
SAES-P-111
E1 method, using a Megger Type DET3 or equivalent hand-cranked test
Sec.4.1
instrument.

Saudi Aramco: Company General Use

The test method as specified for the above instrument for individual and
electrode networks shall be applied as follows:
a) prior to testing the electrode system shall be disconnected from the
ground network.
b) The current spike shall be driven to 1m depth at a point 50m from the
perimeter of the electrode network and the potential spike driven midway,
in a straight line, between the current spike and the connection to the
electrode network.
c) The terminals "CI" and "P1" of the instrument shall be connected to the
ground grid. SAES-P-111
E2
d) Terminal "C2" shall be connected to the remote ground rod. Sec.4.1
e) Terminal "P2" shall be connected to the remote potential spike.
f) The first megger reading R1 is recorded.
g) The potential spike shall be moved to a point 6 m closer to the
electrode network and the reading R2 recorded.
h) The potential spike shall be moved to a point 6 m further away from the
electrode network and the reading R3 recorded.
i) The three readings shall be compared and providing they have
reasonable agreement the average value shall be calculated to give the
network earth resistance value.

For large ground networks, it may be necessary to locate the current

and potential electrodes a considerable distance from the connection to
the network. In this instance, the current and potential electrodes can be
placed at a minimum angle of 90 degrees.
The test shall be conducted as in Item 6.4.2 with the following electrode
spacing:
SAES-P-111
E3 a) The current and potential electrodes shall be driven at a distance 300m
Sec.4.1
from the connection to the earth network and the reading recorded.
b) The current electrode shall be moved out in 30m steps and the
resistance value measured until the same reading is obtained at three
successive locations.
c) The procedure (b) shall be repeated for the potential electrode.
These final three values represent the ground network resistance.

The results obtained shall be compared to those specified in SAES-P-111,

Sec. 8.3 for ground resistance of made electrodes (ground rods and / or
ground grid) used for systems. SAES-P-111
E4
a) Solidly grounded systems above 600 Volts - Less than 1 Ohm Sec.8.3
b) Resistance grounded systems above 600 Volts - Less than 5 Ohms
c) Systems under 600 Volts - Less than 5 Ohms

The tests shall be conducted as detailed above and the results to be

witnessed and recorded by the Site Electrical QC Inspector.
(Attachment 3) SAEP-1636 Sec
E5
Should the resistance values be greater than those specified, this shall 5
indicate that the ground network is inadequate and the results shall be
reported back to the Design Engineering Group.

F Identification and Numbering

Saudi Aramco: Company General Use

Incoming and outgoing pneumatic signal lines shall terminate in
bulkhead fittings. Location and size(s) shall be as specified in the
Purchase Order. The bulkhead fittings shall be identified by colored rings,
blue for incoming and red for outgoing lines. Rings shall be provided 34-SAMSS-821
F1
internally and externally on the panel and be marked with the identification Sec. 7.4.2.3
numbers and letters of the corresponding instruments, i.e., the internal
ring shall carry the panel instrument tag number and the external ring
shall carry the tag number of the field instrument.

Wire Tagging: Cables with connector plugs shall be tagged at each end.
Each cable tag shall have two labels. The first label (closest to the plug
connector) shall identify the device and socket to which the plug is to be 34-SAMSS-820
F2
connected. The second label shall identify the device and socket to which Sec. 6.7.11.1
the opposite end of the cable is connected. The two tags may be
combined into one tag with sufficient separation between the two labels.

The interconnecting wiring shall be tagged at each end with two

identification tags (or the two may be combined into one tag with
sufficient separation between wire numbers). The first tag (closest to
the end of the wire) shall identify the terminal number to which the wire is
physically connected. The second tag shall identify the terminal number to
which the opposite end of the wire is connected.
Commentary Notes: Where jumpers are installed between terminal
blocks in the same row or column and are clearly visible, wire tagging is
not necessary. Identification shall be in accordance with designations
shown on instrument loop diagrams (ILDs). Where wires terminate on
34-SAMSS-820
F3 instrument or device terminals, the instrument tag number and terminal
Sec. 6.7.11.2
designation (+) or (-) (if applicable) will be used in lieu of terminal strip
identification.
Exceptions:
1) Alternate wire tagging schemes, which conform to established local
practice, may be used for extensions to existing facilities with the prior
approval of the operating facility Manager.
2) Vendor Standard wire tagging of interconnecting wiring is allowable
provided concurrence is granted by the operating facility Manager and
General Supervisor, Process Instrumentation Division, Process &
Control Systems Department.
