1 2 1. Introduction
1.1 Brief Description
The RABE RDS ”Artemis II” seed drill
control system allows you to adapt your
RABE seed drill flexibly and optimally to
seed and sowing conditions, and to control
seed rates in a precise and versatile
manner.
ARTEMIS is a fully programmable control
system with a job computer (4/2) and
power unit (4/3) on the seed drill, and with
a removable operating terminal (fig. 1) with
a clearly legible graphic display (1/1) and
1 integrated keypad (1/2) on the tractor.
Data transfer occurs via a flexible integrated
CAN bus. ARTEMIS has an essentially self-
explanatory error tolerant screen display
(menu control).
This allows control to be mastered easily
even without a manual.

Nevertheless, please read the following

information and explanations carefully.
In this way, you will avoid errors in use
and adjustment.

7 1 The operating terminal (2/1) has two M8

stay bolts (2/2) on the rear, with which the
control unit can be fixed to an adjustable
support in the tractor cab.
Also on the rear of the unit are two 9-pin
RS-232 interfaces (2/4) for connecting
additional devices, such as GPS receivers,
external drives, data transfer cables to a PC,
etc.
A short cable equipped with a CA6 socket
(2/6) is attached to the 50-pin connection
(2/5) of the operating terminal. From this
cable, a connection can be made to the
computer on the seed drill with the adjacent
CA6 cable (2/7) as desired.
2 This cable also supplies power to the
terminal on the seed drill.

2 2. Commissioning
1.1 Technical requirements
Power supply
On the tractor, a special 12V connection
(RABE No. 9012.55.01) with the appropriate
wiring harness (fig. 3) must be connected
directly to the vehicle’s battery (see
appendix ‘Commissioning’ the seed drill).
The power supply for the whole seed drill is
furnished via the connection socket (3/1).
The main switch (3/2) and three 20A fuses
(3/3) are also built in to the wiring harness.
3 In the case of a failure, all the fuses must be
1 3 replaced.

Fuses:
Blade pin terminal 12V – 20A (3x) (3/3)

1.2 Switching on the

controller
a) Connect the seed drill’s 12V supply
b) Connect the CA6 connection cable to
the operating terminal
c) Switch on the main switch

After the controller terminal has been

connected to the machine’s job computer
4
3 1 2 (4/3), the <On/Off> button on the
terminal lights up. Press this button briefly
to switch on the computer.
When doing this, ensure that the machine
is raised, otherwise there will be an audible
warning because of incorrect working
parameters!
(The controller makes an intermittent
warning sound as soon as the machine is
brought into the working position if the
minimum speed of 0.5 km/h is not achieved.
As well as this, the fan must have attained
5 its minimum required rotational speed).

After switching on, the screen now appears,

showing the software version and the CAN
module detected (fig. 5). After about 5
seconds the display changes to the main
function screen ”MAIN” (fig. 6).
In principle, the machine is now ready for
immediate use.
The settings are now those preset by the
manufacturer – these can be recalled later
with a software reset!

Possible adjustments of the standard values
to current working conditions are described
in section 4.
The modified values are retained even after
powering off or after a power failure. If
changes have been made, they should be
written down, as they may have to be re-
entered if the standard values are reset.

2.4 Reset

To restore the manufacturer’s settings

(standard values), a reset can be carried out
(fig. 7a-d).
The above parameters are then reapplied,
and the drill width must be input.

How to carry out a RESET:

7a
•When switching on, immediately keep the
lower left soft key <S1> (fig. 8) pressed.

•Then confirm this with the <Enter> key

(fig. 7a-d).

•When the message ‘Enter drill width’ is

displayed, enter the width via the keypad,
and confirm with <Enter>.

•Wait for about 5 seconds before switching

off with the <On/Off> button.

•When switching on again, the

7b manufacturer’s settings have been loaded.

•The display language is English, and the

ground wheel radar factor is 0.00778 m/
impulse. If the machine has a ground wheel,
this factor must be re-entered (4.1.2).

3. Working with the control program

3.1 Main screen – ”Main” <M>
The following screen, which is displayed after switching on, shows at a glance all essential
working data for the seed drill. For this purpose, the display is divided into a number of areas.
At the very top is the Info-bar with the time.
Below is a block display, with speed of travel (a), tramline pattern and rhythm (b), fan speed
(c), and seed rate, with the over/under step in percent (d). The symbols below this indicate
the meaning of the softkeys, which are located below. These are on the main function screen
<M>:

<S1>: Pre-start
<S2>: Metering wheel stop
<S3>: not assigned
<S4>: Tramline counter stop
<S5>: Manual tramline correction

a) Travel speed display and warning
messages

The current speed of travel is displayed in

large digits. The machine operates in the
range between 0.5 km/h to 18 km/h. If
for example the actual speed falls below
the lower limit when the machine is in
working position, a downwards arrow flashes
alternately with a ‘km/h’ message (fig. 9a)
9a as a warning symbol.
If the maximum speed is exceeded the
warning symbol is an upward arrow.
The maximum speed may be less than 18
km/h, depending on the seed rate and seed
type.
An audible warning also sounds.

b) Display of the tramline rhythm and

the current tramline status (fig. 9b)

The upper number displays the tramline

9b cycle (counter). If relaying is suppressed
(tramline stop), the symbol has a line
through it (fig. 9c). The lower number
displays the selected tramline rhythm.
When tramlines are active, a checkmark is
displayed next to the switched row.
A symmetrical tramline is displayed in
this figure. For asymmetric tramlines, a
checkmark is displayed only on the left or
on the right. The motor-driven flaps of the
distributor head outlets are correspondingly
activated together or individually.
The tramline cycle is relayed by raising the
9c
machine before the turn, i.e. if the machine
is in the rest position for more than 5
seconds, the rhythm switches forward by
one pass.

c) Fan speed display (fig. 9d)

The current speed is displayed in rpm in the
screen area (fig. 9c).

d) Display of the current seed rate per

hectare (fig. 9e)

9d The current seed rate in kg/ha is displayed

in the screen area (fig. 9d).

3.1.1 Softkey functions
(Softkeys)

<S1> Pre-start
How to use pre-start
Pre-start is a useful function for avoiding
faulty patches, e.g. when starting off, or
for avoiding the need to reset after a pause
during a pass.
The function is straightforward. To use
it, the fan must be running at its nominal
speed. Press softkey <S1> (fig. 10)
once to start the machine sowing at the
calibration rate. The softkey flashes during
10 the waiting time X.
Once the waiting time is over, two short
audible signals are emitted.
The sowing machine must now be rapidly
put in motion.
For this step, the reaction time Y is allowed
following the audible signal.
After this time has elapsed, the machine is
controlled by the ground wheel or radar, as
normal.
The two time values should be carefully
selected to avoid gaps or piling up when
starting off.
Pre-start can also be initiated when the
machine is raised (e.g. when turning at
the start of the field), to avoid a stop when
sowing again.
(Ensure that the fan speed is
sufficient).
For settings, see section 4.3.4.2

<S2> Metering wheel stop

The function for manually stopping the
metering wheel can be useful, e.g. when
raising the machine at the end of the field.
In this case, the metering can be switched
off by pressing key <S2> (fig. 11) even
before raising the machine, with the result
that seed no longer lies on the surface.
The metering wheel stop can be cancelled
by pressing the <S2> key again, or it is
cancelled automatically when raising is over.
11 For machines equipped with radar,
the metering wheel stop key must be
activated when a pause is to be made
while working. Otherwise, when the
machine is running with sufficient fan speed,
and the machine is in the working position,
metering may start from time to time
through movements picked up by the radar.

<S4> Tramline stop
With Tramline Stop <S4> (fig. 12) ,
relaying is suppressed, regardless of
whether the terminal key <S5> is pressed
or not, or whether the machine is raised.
Press terminal key <S4> again to release
relaying. The status of switching can be
seen from whether or not the symbol has
a line through it. Note that the tramline
cycle only relays once the machine has been
raised for 5 seconds.
12

<S5> Modify tramline cycle

Tramlines are relaid by raising the machine
(sowing stop) or manually by the correction
key <S5> on the terminal. When tramlines
are active, a checkmark appears against the
switched row (track). See fig. 13.

3.2 Setting operating

parameters
3.2.1 Accessing the
parameter menus <P>
13
When the <P>key for the parameter
menus is pressed, the screen in fig. 14
appears. This is the entry menu for setting
all machine values. By pressing the lower
softkeys <S1> and <S2> a direct selection
and change of the working parameters on
this screen is equally possible.

14

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

3.2.2 Software key functions

<S1> Seed type selection

16 seed type values are available. For each,
the names and further parameters can be
modified and adjusted in a menu described
under ”ADJUSTMENT”.
As standard, and after reset, three seed
types with average values are available.
A – winter wheat, B – winter barley, C
15 – oilseed rape.
On selection, the values in the seed type
table are loaded automatically.
After pressing key <S1> (seed type
selection) the screen in fig. 15 appears.
Use the up/down keys (<S1>, <S2>) (fig.
16) to move the marker arrow at the left
of the text to the line with the names of the
seed type (e.g. A – winter wheat).
Use the right/left keys (<S4>, <S5) (fig.
16) to select one of the available seed
types.
Confirm the selection with <Enter> so that
16 the standard parameters are loaded.
Please do not undertake any more changes
at this point.
Further possibilities are described later.
1 Press key <S3> ”ESC” to return to the
parameter menu <P>.
When the seed type parameters are
correct, the values can be accepted without
calibrating, but for new seed types or
incorrect parameters, calibration will be
required.

3.2.3 Software key

functions

<S2> Calibration
17
The metering motor can be started manually
with the motor switch (17/1) in order to fill
the compartmented wheels of the metering
housing.
If the calibration key <S2>is pressed during
operator set-up (fig.18), a warning screen
(fig. 19) is displayed if the calibration flap
is not open, and an audible signal is emitted.
These are cleared as soon as the calibration
flap is opened, and the selection menu is
displayed, in which the selected seed type is
displayed (fig. 20). If tramline switching is
currently active, tramlines are automatically
deactivated for the period of the calibration
18
sample (after about 5 seconds).
Subject to technical change without notice 12 09.2003

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

On leaving the calibration procedure,
tramlines are again activated. The tramline
counter is not affected by this.
Similar to the method of selecting seed
type, the marker arrow can now be moved
to the line for TKG (1000 grain weight) and
seed rate.
19 It is not absolutely necessary to alter the
TKG.
Enter the desired seed rate in kg/ha when
the marker arrow is on the correct line,
and confirm with <Enter>. Now move the
marker arrow to ”STARTE KALIBRIERUNG”
(START CALIBRATION), and press
<Enter> again.

In the display in fig. 21 select whether to

calibrate with 0.025 ha or 1/40 ha. Because
the computer counts during calibration, it is
in fact unimportant which calibration area is
used.
Using arrow keys (<S4>, S5>), the 1/100
ha or 1/40 ha can be varied upwards or
20 downwards in steps. A modification can also
be made via the numerical pad.

Rule: the larger the calibration area, the

smaller the error.

Press <Enter> to accept the value.

If the <Enter> key is pressed again, the
following message (fig. 22) is displayed.
The metering wheels should now be full, and
the correct metering wheel setting should be
selected.
For machines with two metering wheels,
take care that calibration is always carried
out using both metering devices.
Attach a bucket with a known weight.
21
When everything is ready, press the
<Enter> key.
During the calibration procedure, the
progress in area and the number of
metering wheel revolutions are displayed on
the screen.
While a calibration is in progress, it can be
interrupted at any time by pressing one of
the STOP keys <S1 – S5>.

22

Subject to technical change without notice 13 09.2003

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

The display then changes automatically to
the previous display for a new calibration
sample. When the calibration is complete,
the control system (fig. 23) requests the
calibration quantity. The display indicates
merely the predicted value for the quantity
of seed released during calibration.
The more accurately that the seed
parameters are entered into the seed
table, the smaller will be the deviation
of the actual calibration results from
the expected value.
23
Now enter the measured value of the
sample weight in kg (fig. 23). If there are
two metering devices, weigh both buckets
together.
Use the numerical pad on the control unit
for this, and accept the displayed value by
pressing <Enter>.

There is no need to perform

calculations on the weighed quantity.
Do not forget to enter the decimal
point.
The software only accepts values within
the range of 33% to 300% of the predicted
value.
24 Otherwise, an error message is displayed,
and a repeat calibration is required!
If the value is unacceptable, it will be
necessary to enter a fictitious value between
33 % and 300%, to be able to repeat
calibration and achieve a successful result.
If the value input is accepted by the
software, the display is as shown in fig. 24.
The deviation from the predicted value is
displayed in percent.
The value can be accepted with <Enter>,
and the display returns to the warning
display (fig. 19).
25 It is necessary to check the calibration
procedure, Use the <P> and <S2> keys to
repeat the procedure as described in 3.2.3.
A repetition is required until the desired
calibration quantity has been reached.
This can usually be achieved within two
repetitions.

The Close Calibration Flap alarm screen

appears until the calibration flap is
closed.
Before starting sowing, close the
calibration flap(s) manually on the
metering housings.

To carry out a further calibration (control)

19 press the <ESC> key. In fig. 25 the devia-
tion in % is displayed again – confirm this
with <Enter>.

3.2.4 Software key functions

<S3> Tramline settings

Tramline rhythm and execution can be
preselected in this screen (fig. 27).
Rhythms from 1 (permanent tramline)
to 12 are possible, symmetrically or
asymmetrically right or left. Custom
27 rhythms are also available which enable the
laying down of correct tramlines.
After the correct setting has been selected
with the arrow keys, exit the display with
<ESC>.

3.2.5 Software key functions

<S4> Warning parameters

This is where the monitored parameters
(fig. 28) of the seed drill are displayed.
It is not usually necessary to modify the
preset parameters, but different values can
be set using the numerical pad.
28 Thus it can on occasion be useful to switch
off the warning function for a time.
Thus, for example if the fan sensor is out of
order, fan monitoring can be switched off by
setting the lower fan speed (LO) limit to 0.
Please ensure that the machine does
not sow below the lower fan speed limit
(danger of blockages).
The alarm for low hopper level can also be
switched off if there is only a small amount
of seed in the hopper.
To do this, move the marker arrow to
the corresponding line (below) and select
between ON and OFF with the right/left
keys.

3.2.6 Software key functions

<S5> Job management

Working with predefined jobs (fig. 29)
requires additional hardware components
such as an external drive and/or a GPS
receiver, etc. Unless additional components
are connected, this key has no effect.

Fan
3.3 Alarm screen
Warning messages
These alarm displays (fig. 30) appear for
all types of warning messages until the
cause is resolved, or the warning message
is cancelled with the ”RESET” <S5> keys.
If there are several warning messages
simultaneously, their count is displayed in
the upper part of the screen (e.g. 1 of 3).
The individual messages can be viewed with
the arrow keys (<S1>, <S2>).
Contents When a reset has been carried out, a small
level bell flashes on the main function screen
above the <S5> key as a reminder.
For example, if the machine has been
switched off on one side, the warning
message ‘Dosierwelle’ (Metering Shaft)
is displayed immediately. This can then be
acknowledged by a key press.
If the machine is subsequently raised (e.g.
when turning), the acknowledgement is then
cancelled for safety reasons.
If the warning screen appears, an
Motor rpm intermittent audible warning is given at the
same time, and the warning triangles in the
corners of the screen flash.
In the warning screens illustrated, the
following warnings are active:

• Fan speed too low (identifiable by the

downward arrow next to the symbol)
• Hopper contents level warning
• Metering motor speed too low

The function screen ”RATE” makes a wide

range of information available on the current
seed rate and its modification. To reach this
screen, just press the <R> key.
The following screen appears (Fig. 31):
The large display is the current seed rate.
The maximum permitted speed of travel is
displayed as a second figure (this may be
appreciably less than 18 km/h for high seed
rates).
Below this is the calibrated seed rate in kg/
ha (as a reference).
31 The final value is the deviation in % of the
current seed rate from the calibrated value.

3.4.2 Changing the rate on the

move

Use the +/- keys (<S2>, <S3>) (fig. 31)

to increase or reduce the seed rate in the
preset displayed step (e.g. 5%).
The range is from -50% to +50% of the
calibrated quantity (fig. 31.1).
Use the <S4> key to return directly to
the calibrated quantity. The increased or
reduced quantity is displayed in % in the
main screen.

Two independent area counters are active in

the background during sowing. The current
display (total or partial area) is displayed in
black on the softkey symbol.
‘Part’ indicates a partial area (e.g. since the
start of the day). ‘TOT’ indicates the total
drilled area. Change between displays using
the <S1> key (fig. 33).
To set the current counter to zero, press the
33 RESET key <S5>. For the ‘PART’ display,
for example the following question appears
(see fig 33).
Press ‘YES’ (<S4>) to set both area and
quantity to 0, and to set the time and date
to the current value. If NO (<S5>) is
pressed, the values remain unchanged.
The display changes automatically to the
previous INFO screen.

3.5.3 GRAND
Use the GRAND key (<S3>) to display the
overall working time of the machine. This
data cannot be deleted.

Information for advanced users

The functions described so far give the user

a simple, secure, and satisfactory method
for controlling the machine using the
ARTEMIS II seed drill controller from RABE.
There is however a further range of useful
functions which make the use of the
controller even more flexible, and which
enable optimal sowing by adjusting to the
seed type and to sowing conditions.

34 In the parameter menu screens, the

menu options may be selected by

4. Accessing the
parameter screens
<P>
4.1 Operator setup
By pressing the <P> key for the parameter
screens, the screen in fig. 34 is displayed.
Then, by pressing the <1> key on the
numerical pad, you access the operator
setup parameters (fig. 35). Various settings
may be made here (4.1.1 to 4.1.7).

4.1.1 DISPLAY
This screen can be used to set the
brightness and contrast of the display (see
fig. 35).

4.1.2 SPEED SENSOR

35
FACTOR
a) enter calculated speed sensor
factor
b) calibrate machine on the move

The speed sensor factor is the actual

distance travelled between two impulses
from the ground wheel revolution counter
or the radar. The manufacturer’s standard
setting for all machines is 0.00778 metres
per impulse. This is the value for the radar.
The value for the ground wheel is 0.00684
metres per impulse, and must be entered
when using a ground wheel. Because of
35 varying soil conditions, it can be useful to
calibrate the ground wheel in the field - this
is in any case the more exact method.

Both these methods are now described.

Move to the Operator Setup screen with the
menu key <P>and option <1>. Then select
SPEED FACTOR with option <2>.
The following display appears (fig. 36).

36

Subject to technical change without notice 19 09.2003

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

a)
If known, enter the numerical value directly
via the key pad, and confirm with <Enter>.
The figure is a calculated value, and
corresponds to how many metres are
travelled by the machine per impulse
from the ground wheel sensor. The sensor
transmits 360 impulses per revolution. If the
actual working circumference of the ground
wheel is known, the actual value of the
circular arc can be calculated – but this is
not recommended.!
37
The following method of measurement is
recommended:

b)
Determine a length of 100 metres with a
measuring tape, and mark it off with two
poles. Line up a fixed point on the machine
with the first pole, and set the machine
in the working position. Now select the
”AUTO-CAL” menu line with the marker
arrow, and press <ENTER>.
The following screen appears (see fig. 37).
Now press <ENTER> and drive the machine
off as normal.
Do not sow during the measurement, i.e.
the fan does not need to be at its nominal
speed. Once in motion, the impulses are
displayed on the control panel. At the end
of the measured length, stop with the fixed
point on the machine as closely aligned
as possible to the second pole, and press
<ENTER>. The display changes to SPEED
SENSOR FACTOR, the value is calculated
automatically and displayed immediately.
Pressing ENTER saves the value; pressing
ESC allows a new test to be carried out.
When the speed factor value has been
saved, the display returns to SPEED SENSOR
FACTOR. Exit from this screen with <ESC>.

4.1.3 CUSTOMISE
The CUSTOMISE options can be accessed
as follows:
Press the Menu Screens key (see 3.2.1).
Select option 1 (Operator setup) by
pressing <ENTER> (the marker arrow will
already be in the correct position).
Then select option 3. CUSTOMISE (e.g. by
bringing the marker arrow to the correct
line and pressing <ENTER>). The following
screen is displayed (fig. 38).
38

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

a) Sowing rate in kg/ha or K/m2
The seed rate can be displayed either
in kg/ha or in K/m2. If the K/m2
option (grains per square metre) is
used, a correct entry for the TGW
(weight per 1000 grains) is important for
each seed type.
If kg/ha is used, it does not matter if the
TGW value is incorrect, as the program
ignores the TGW, and instead works with
the filled weight of the metering wheel cells.
In this case, the current standard values for
small or normal seeds can be left as they
are.
Change the setting as follows: in the display
bring the marker arrow to the first line, and
select ”RATE” with the right/left arrow keys
<S4>, <S5>. If this screen is exited with
<ESC>, all further displays of quantity by
the control system are in K/m2.

b) Rate step change on the ”RATE”

screen <R>
Using the ”RATE” function screen, the seed
rate (fig. 39) can be modified at any point
in the run (see 3.4.1).
The rate step for this can be preset.
To do this, move the marker arrow to the
39 STEP line and set the desired percentage
value using the right/left arrow keys <S4>,
<S5> (fig. 40). Values between 1% and
50% are possible. Exit this screen with
<ESC> to save the selected value.

c) Seed library
The characteristics dependent on the seed
type and needed to calculate and control
the seed rate exactly are stored in the seed
library of the job computer.
Note: a small amount of careful work in
maintaining the seed library will save a lot
40 of work in calibrating, and a lot of money
through exact, optimized sowing.

In order to display the seed library, move

the marker arrow to the EDIT NAMES line
and press <ENTER>. A total of 16 seed
types are available for entry (A-P).
Three standard seed types have already
been set up by the manufacturer.
A-winter wheat, B-winter barley, C-oilseed
rape.
The entries for these standard types may
however be modified.
(Note that these modifications are lost
after a reset.)
Use the <*> key to move between entries
A-D, E-H, I-L, and M-P.

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

NOTE: This is only possible if no line has
been selected for editing.
This is done by pressing the left/right arrow
keys. This causes a flashing underline to
appear at the active position in the line
indicated by the marker arrow. In this
mode, it is not possible to change screens
with the <*> key.
When <ENTER> is pressed, the underline
disappears again, and it is possible to move
between the four screens with the <*> key.

Seed type name

To name a new seed type or to rename an
existing type, move the marker arrow to the
corresponding line and select the desired
position with the left/right arrow keys.
A name can be entered from the numerical
keypad in the same way as when using
a mobile phone. Move between upper
and lower case using the <*> key. Press
<Enter> when the entry is complete.

Normal or small seed type

It must now be determined whether this is a
normal or a small seed type.
This is important as the corresponding
standard values are now assigned to the
new seed type.
To do this, place the marker arrow on the
line below the new seed type, and use
the left/right arrow keys to select either
NORMAL SEED or SMALL SEED.
Press <ESC> three times after completing
the entry to return to the parameter menu.

4.1.4 Seed type selection

a) Determine and enter the seed type
Standard values for TGW and kg per
metering wheel revolution have been
assigned to the standard seed types in the
seed library. Assigning is carried out in the
seed library by the selection of small seed
or normal seed type. These values enable
problem-free calibration and sowing with the
machine. Only the value for kg per metering
wheel revolution is effective for calibration.
The more exact the value for a given seed
type, the more exact will the calibration be.
The numerical value is best determined as
follows:
Set the mechanical parameters on the
metering device as per the instructions for
use (metering wheel, select bottom flap
setting). Load with seed. Raise the machine,
and switch on the electronics. Open the
calibration flap and place a container
beneath it. Fill the metering wheels by

pressing the motor button, and then empty
the container and replace in position.
Note the position of a bolt (for example) on
the metering shaft clutch, and then keep the
motor button depressed until the metering
wheel has made 10 revolutions.
Weigh the seed from both metering wheels
(as required), and divide by 10. This is the
correct value.
For small seed types, it is a good idea to
include a ‘1’ or ‘2’ in the name, depending
on whether 1 or 2 small seed wheels were
used for each measuring unit.

Enter the determined numerical value in the

following way:

Press the key for the parameter screen (see

3.2.1), select option 1 OPERATOR SETUP
by pressing <ENTER> (the marker key is
already in the correct position when the
screen is displayed).
Now select option 4 PRODUCT
SELECTION. Select the corresponding seed
type (fig. 41) and move the marker arrow
to the line ‘kg/rev’.

Now enter the measured value using

the numerical key pad, and confirm with
<ENTER>. When <ESC>is pressed, the
parameter menu is again displayed.
It is not possible to modify the TGW here.
41 This can only be done by calling up the
calibration menu, as described in 3.2.3.
This is however only necessary if the seed
rate is measured in K/m2.

b) Compensation of deviation in seed

rates
Because of variations in seed properties,
particularly segregation while in motion,
variations in rate can occur when working
over large areas, in spite of exact calibration
and a well maintained seed library. In this
case, the Artemis II software offers the user
a unique way to compensate this error.
To use this, the following limit parameters
must be set as shown:
(a) the machine must sow in kg/ha. If it is
working in K/m2, it must be changed over
(see 4.1.3).
(b) error compensation can be carried
out individually for each seed type in the
library. Values for the seed type must be
determined and entered as described in
4.1.4.
(c) when the measurement area is being
sown as required, do not use tramlines or
pre-start.

Subject to technical change without notice 23 09.2003

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

These could cause an erroneous result.
If however the same tramline rhythm and/or
pre-start are always used, it can in fact be a
good idea to maintain the normal settings of
the machine.
This however is not recommended.
(d) do not change the seed rate during the
measurement.
(e)The measurement is carried out over
an area of 1 ha, though any area can be
selected. In this case the values determined
must be converted according to the area
selected.
In the following example, compensation is
carried out using the following values:

Seed type winter wheat

kg/rev 0.430
seed rate 200 kg/ha
selected area 2 ha

About 500kg of seed should be weighed out.

Set the metering devices, and fill the
machine. Select winter wheat and calibrate
as exactly as possible (see 3.2.3).
Before sowing, check again that the sowing
quantity is correctly shown as 200 kg/ha on
the ‘Main’ function screen (fig. 42).
If not, set the quantity on the ‘RATE’ screen
to deviation 0. Set the part area counter
‘PART’ to 0 (see 3.5.2).
Now sow 2 ha of land.
The current area sown can be displayed at
any time on the ‘INFO’ – ‘PART’ screen,
even during sowing.
Cease sowing after exactly 2.00 ha. Remove
and weigh the excess seed from the hopper.
Subtract this value from that of the filled
quantity (500kg).
Assume that 84 kg are left over. Therefore
(500-84) = 416kg were used. Divide this
by 2, as 2 ha was the area chosen for
measurement.
42 416/2 = 208kg

This is the value (ACTUAL WORK WEIGHT)

to be used for the subsequent adjustment.
Move to Seed Type Selection (3.2.2).
The following display appears (fig. 43) with
the current seed type:

43

Subject to technical change without notice 24 09.2003

Downloaded from www.Manualslib.com manuals search engine

Now move the marker arrow to the
line ‘NUDGE CAL. FACTOR’ and press
<ENTER>.
Next enter the expected value for 1 ha, in
our example 200 kg (fig. 44).

Confirm the value with <ENTER>.

The actual amount used is now requested:
Now enter the previously calculated value
(208 in the current example).
Complete the entry by pressing <ENTER>.
The control system now displays a sowing
error due to mechanical effects, and asks
44 whether it should compensate for the
current seed type. The following display
appears (fig. 45):
In the measurement in the example, there
has therefore been 4% too much used.
Press <ENTER> now to confirm the value.
The display changes back to the seed type
selection, and displays the current seed
type.
Note the value for ‘kg/rev’ in fig.
46compared with fig. 47:
The value has now been automatically
corrected for the current seed type. This
measurement is not absolutely necessary,
as the errors which occur are relatively
small. Even during the calibration test, the
45
difference will be difficult to ascertain.
It is however sensible to use the
measurement over long runs, where the
seed hopper needs to be filled several times,
and where significant deviations in the feed
(flow behaviour) over large areas, caused by
the mechanical effect of the seed type, are
observed in comparison to the calibration
test.

a) Calculating waiting time X:
The preset standard value of 5 seconds is
approximately the correct value for front
hopper machines on a circular spike harrow
or compact harrow.
On drawn combi-speed machines, the
time is slightly shorter; in the case of
front hopper machines with an additional
agropack, the time is slightly longer.
Determine the correct time as follows:
Raise the machine, switch on the
electronics, and set the fan to its nominal
rpm.
Engage the handbrake. Alight from the
tractor and ensure that the metering wheels
are completely full.
Place a bucket or similar below a blade.
Bring the machine into its working position,
and turn the ground wheel briefly, or
activate the radar briefly in order that some
seed flows.
The time for the first seed to reach the
bucket, less one second, is the correct
waiting time X.

b) Calculating reaction time Y:

The preset standard value of 5 seconds is
normally sufficient.
The time is very dependent on the speed of
reaction of the driver.
It is suggested that the reaction time Y
is not normally modified.

4.4.5 Setting the tramline
counter
Using the control system, it is possible to
select whether the tramline counter should
count based on the undercarriage (when
the machine is raised) or based on the
change valve of the marker arm (when the
57 marker arm folds in). When the tramline
counter is controlled by the undercarriage,
the connection between the switch and the
change valve should be broken (withdraw
the connector on valve 58). When the menu
button is pressed, the main menu appears
(Fig.59). Select option 4 ‘Rabe-Setting’, and
Fig.60 appears. Now select option 6 (0+
select...) in the Settings menu. (Fig.61)
58 appears. Use the Left and Right buttons to
make the desired selection. If the marker
arm option is chosen, a switch symbol with
a numerical value appears under the screen.
This value indicates how long pressure must
be applied to the oil pressure switch. Use
59 the arrow keys underneath at the right,
and set a value of 0.5 to 5 seconds. When
the pattern is switched, a blockage interval
of 15 seconds is activated, during which
the control system will not recogise any
impulses for further pattern switching. Now
press ESC to complete the setting. This
stores the value in the control system.

4.4.6 Calibration factors
