III. Objectives:
a. Differentiate primary and secondary sources; and
b. Identify primary and secondary sources within the context.
IV. Discussion:
When you do research or write essays, you have to gather information and evidence from a variety
sources. You call them primary and secondary sources.
A primary source is an original object or document- the raw material or first-hand information.
Primary sources include historical and legal documents, eyewitness accounts, results of
experiments, statistical data, pieces of creative writing, and art objects.
Other examples of primary sources:
Autobiographies and memoirs
Diaries, personal letters, and correspondence
Interviews, surveys, and fieldwork
Internet communications on email, blogs, listservs, and newsgroups
Photographs, drawings, and posters
A secondary source is something written about a primary source. Secondary sources include
comments on, interpretation of, of discussions about the original material. You can think of
secondary sources as second-hand information.
If I tell you something, I am the primary source. If you tell someone else what I told you, you are the
secondary source.
Secondary source materials can be articles in newspapers or popular magazines, book or movie
reviews, or articles found in scholarly journals that discuss or evaluate someone else’s research.
Other examples of secondary sources:
Bibliographies
Biographical works
Reference books. Including dictionaries, encyclopedias, and atlases
Articles from magazines, journals, and newspapers after the event
Literature reviews and review articles (e.g. movie reviews, book reviews)
History books and other popular or scholarly books
