Procedure (direct and concise) Adding Similar Fractions
In addition of fractions having similar denominators, just add the
numerators and remain the denominator as it is. If the sum can be
reduced to lowest terms, then do so.

Activity 1 Adding Similar Fractions

Find the Sum

Adding Dissimilar Fractions
In addition of fractions having unlike denominators, the least
common denominator (LCD) should be get first then change the
fractions into equivalent fractions with the LCD as the
denominator. If the sum can still be reduced to lowest terms, then
do so.

Adding Fractions with Mixed Fractions (Mixed Numbers)
If a proper or improper fraction is added with a mixed number, it is
easier to convert the mixed number first into an improper fraction
then use the steps and conditions mentioned above. Same situation
applies with addends which are all mixed numbers.

Subtracting Similar Fractions

Just like with addition, subtracting fractions having similar
denominators will just subtract the numerators and remain the
denominator.

Subtracting Dissimilar Fractions
Also similar with the case of fractions having unlike denominators,
the least common denominator (LCD) should be get first then
change the fractions into equivalent fractions with the LCD as the
denominator. But these conditions are only applicable if the
fractions are not mixed numbers.

Methods for subtracting Two or More Mixed Fractions.

First Method
Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction.
If the proper fractions have unlike denominators, get the LCD
and change the fractions into equivalent fractions using the LCD
as the denominator. Subtract the numerators and remain the LCD
as the denominator. Reduce to lowest terms.

Methods for subtracting Two or More Mixed Fractions.
Second Method
If the larger mixed number has a smaller proper fraction than the
smaller mixed number, subtract the whole number of the larger
mixed fraction by 1 and add 1 to the proper fraction. By adding
1 to the proper fraction, it will become a mixed number. The new
larger mixed number will be a whole number added by a mixed
number with 1 as the whole number. Change the mixed number
(with 1 as the whole number) into an improper fraction.
Subtract the whole number of the smaller mixed number from the
whole number of the new larger mixed number. If the proper
fractions have similar denominators, subtract the numerators
directly and remain the denominator as it is. But if the proper
fractions have unlike denominators, get the LCD and change the
fractions into equivalent fractions using the LCD as the
denominator then subtract the numerators and remain the LCD
as the denominator. Reduce to lowest terms.
Note:
The second method is only applicable when the larger mixed
number has a smaller proper fraction than the smaller mixed
number.

Concepts Learned Fractions represent equal parts of a whole or a collection. When we
divide a whole into equal parts, each part is a fraction of the whole.
Similar fractions are fractions with same denominators.
Dissimilar fractions are fractions with different denominators.
Mixed fractions A whole number and a fraction combined into one.
To add or subtract similar fractions, add or subtract the numerators
and copy the denominator. Write the sum or difference in lowest terms.
To add or subtract dissimilar fractions, change them to similar fractions
by finding the LCD, add or subtract the numerators and copy the
denominator. Write the sum or difference in lowest terms.
To add or subtract mixed number, Add or subtract the whole
number part first, make the fractional parts similar and add or subtract
the fractional parts. Write the answer in simplest form.
To add similar fractions, add the numerators and copy the
denominator. If the numerator is equal or more than its denominator,
we need to regroup. Divide the numerator by its denominator: the
quotient will be the whole number part, the remainder is the numerator
and the divisor is the denominator. Write the sum in lowest terms.
To add or subtract dissimilar fractions, change them to similar
fractions by finding the LCD, add or subtract the numerators and copy
the denominator. Regroup if possible and write the sum or difference in
lowest terms.
To add or subtract mixed number, Add or subtract the whole
number part first, make the fractional parts similar and add or subtract
the fractional parts. Regroup if possible and write the answer in simplest
form.
In subtraction of mixed number, if the fractional part of the
minuend is lesser than the fractional part of the subtrahend, borrow 1
whole part from the whole part of the minuend and rename it as similar
fraction. Combine this with the fractional part and proceed to
subtraction.
