Assignment – II Due date: 23 November 2020

1. A transmission system sends out information at 200,000 b/s. During the transmission
process, fluctuation noise is added to the signal so that at the decoder output the signal pulses
are 1 V in amplitude and the rms noise voltage is 0.2 V. (Assume 𝜎 = 𝜎 )
(a) Assuming that ones and zeros are equally likely to be transmitted, what is the
average time in which an error occurs? Use the approximate expression for
BER.
(b) How is this time changed if the voltage amplitude is doubled with the rms noise
voltage remaining the same?

2. Given the signal voltage for a binary 1 is 𝑣 and 𝑣 = 𝑣 /2.

(a) If 𝜎 = 0.20𝑣 and 𝜎 = 0.24𝑣 find the error probabilities 𝑃(1|0) and 𝑃(0|1).
(b) If 𝑝(1) = 0.65 and 𝑝(0) = 0.35, find BER
(c) If 𝑝(1) = 𝑝(0) = 0.5, find BER

3. An LED operating at 1300 nm injects 25 𝜇W of optical power into a fiber. If the attenuation
between the LED and the photodetector is 40 dB and the photodetector quantum efficiency
is 0.65, what is the probability that 5 electron–hole pairs will be generated at the detector in
a 1-ns interval?

4. Consider an on-off binary system that transmits the signal levels 0 and A with equal
probability in the presence of gaussian noise. Let the signal amplitude A be K multiplied by
the standard deviation of the noise. Use the approximate expression for error function.
(a) Calculate the net probability of error if K = 10.
(b) Find the value of K required to give a net error probability of 10–5.

5. A digital optical fiber communication system operating at a wavelength of 1 μm requires a

maximum bit-error-rate of 10−9. Determine:
(a) the theoretical quantum limit at the receiver in terms of the quantum efficiency
of the detector 𝜂, and the energy of an incident photon
(b) the minimum incident optical power required at the detector in order to achieve
the above bit-error-rate when the system is employing ideal binary signaling at
10 Mbit s−1, and assuming the detector is ideal.
