Research

Research is a method of acquiring knowledge, based on scientific method of


enquiry to enrich the system of objective knowledge. Or it is a systematic search of
any topic.
Importance of Research
1. Development of generalization
2. To improve educators educational life
3. To develop new understanding about teaching, learning and administration
4. To gather evidence and to learn something

Style of Research
1. Exploratory / formulative research-results of the research will be treated.
2. Descriptive Research-presents specific details of a situation, social setting or
relationship
3. Explanatory Mixed Research- It’s a combination of quantitative and qualitative
research.
Characteristics of a Research
1. Controlled- means the effects are minimized. Variables are minimized.
2. Rigorous- there is a procedure to be followed
3. Systematic-it is done in a logical sequence.
4. Valid and verifiable- means acceptable and can be verified by others.
5. Empirical- conclusion is based on hard evidence.
6. Critical- investigation is free from drawback.

Uses of Research
1. Basic Research- focuses on refuting or supporting theories.
2. Applied Research- tries to solve problems. (action research)

Classes of Research
1. Quantitative Research- it is a traditional scientific method . Gathers empirical
evidence. Its type are: survey, correlational research means testing 2 variables to
find their relationships.
2. Experimental research- is guided by hypothesis.
3. Qualitative research- studies human behavior and the reasons that govern it.
Example of Quali Question:
1. What are the problems of the Grade 6 pupils of Agoho Elem. School
regarding their reading abilities?
2. What are the challenges met by teachers regarding the teaching of reading?
