This problem based on understanding level at K1.

Problem 01:

Consider an electron in a hypothetical one-dimensional space. The potential energy distribution, V(x) is shown
in the following figure.

Three separate regions: A, B and C are defined in the

figure. Here, a = 4.91 nm, and Vo = 1 eV. The electron
wave function in region A is given by the following
equation:

 A ( x ) = −4e jkx + 1 + j 3 e − jkx ( )

Assume that the electron is in region A initially. The
value of the wave number (k) in region A is given
2meV1
numerically by: k =

Here, e = electron charge, V1 = 1 V (a hypothetical
voltage).

Calculate the following:

i. The wave function in region B.
ii. The wave function in region C.
All constants must be calculated or expressed in terms of A1 and A2.

Problem 02:

a. An 70 at % Au–30 at % Sn eutectic alloy disk of 40 mm diameter and 5 mm thickness is used to conduct

heat from a heat source to a heat sink and consider 20 ˚C as an ambient temperature.

1. Apply Equation 2.20 (in the textbook) and use Table 2.1, Table 2.3 (in the textbook) are given below, here to
find the resistivity of the eutectic alloy in the disk. Calculate the thermal resistance of the eutectic alloy disk
2. If the disk is conducting heat at a rate of 250 W, calculate the temperature drop along the disk.

b. What should be the composition of eutectic alloy if the temperature drop across the disk is to be halved?
