AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROFESSIONAL LIFE OF FRASER ALLEN

Fraser Allen is utilizing the skills and experience she is obtaining from her academic and professional career to practice effective
communication. As Walter Isaacson stated, the ability to collaborate effectively is decisive. Living in a world that is increasingly
centered around the ability to communicate, Allen strives to find better ways to connect people, gain exposure, and drive growth
through branding. Aware that good communication is an integral piece to business success, Allen is ardent for furthering her
knowledge through hard work and experience. Pairing her passion for communication with marketing, she hopes to combine these
two fields when exploring her professional career.

This past summer, Allen interned at Fox45 News in its marketing, news promotions, and sports departments. The wide range of
knowledge she gained while there prepared her for furthering her career. Serving as the sole intern allowed her to receive a
unique hands-on experience. Many of the commercials and daily promotions she created during her time made the air, an
accomplishment she is proud of. In addition to this internship, she worked closely with Mikkeller, a Danish brewing company
over the course of her semester abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark. She successfully created two campaigns for its company. These
experiences have accentuated her motivated and creative nature.

Allen is currently a third-year student at Elon University, pursuing a Bachelor of Art degree with a major in strategic
communications and minor in sport management. On campus, she is involved in the American Advertising Federation, Financial
Management Association, and served on the Public Relations Committee for the Phi Mu Fraternity. She also recently got inducted
into Lambda Pi Eta, a communications honor society.

FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A MILLENIAL WRITING ON BEHALF OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY RESEARCH

The Cell Phone Does More Than Distract

We are living in a world that is being increasingly taken over by technology. The introduction of the smartphone in 1992 changed
the way humans perform daily activities. Everyday tasks are now able to be performed online in just seconds. Social media,
instant-messaging, and internet-surfing are available at our finger-tips at any moment. But, is this benefitting us or just self-
destructing our society?

This led me to pose the question, “Can cell phones be educational tools?”

As the current vice president for research at Harvard University, I posed this question to our staff and student body. The reviews
were mixed, but ultimately skewed to the conclusion that cell phones can indeed educate.

First, I will acknowledge the research and results displaying that our phones contain unbeneficial qualities for the academic
environment. With the ability to access text messaging and social media in an instant, cell phones pose an element of distraction
inside and outside the classroom. They provide many social platforms that are not educational, and hinder student’s ability to
work efficiently. One viewpoint states that “there’s the negative effect that smartphones can have on a student’s attentiveness in
class.” Just one incoming notification or click of an app can set back a student’s focus on academics.

However, despite their element of distraction, smartphones provide endless opportunities for education. Students at Harvard
acknowledged that smartphones can “teach a professional development course.” Phones actually enable access to online courses
and tools where students can work directly from their phones. These students actually launched a mobile course to test the
capability of smartphones to be used as an educational platform. “20 education administrations signed on for a three-week
course.” This demonstrates that smartphones possess the capability of acting as a substitute classroom where individuals can be
taught different material.
14
In addition, they contain educational applications. These applications allow us to check our bank accounts, search the web, find
directions, access news, film and take photos, and much more. Other applications that relate directly to work allow us to access
our coursework and schedule through a school-sponsored application. Others allow us to actually complete work through
applications like Google Documents or Google Drive.

After collecting initial results from the Harvard community, I examined a study conducted by Oxford to get an outside perspective
on the topic. Oxford students and staff came to the same consensus that smartphones are a great educational tool that provide
educational learning apps, incorporate digital platforms into lessons, supplement lessons with digital material, and provide easy
access to more information.

To conclude with some background, I have been a part of the Harvard Research team since 2012 working with the president to
cultivate high impact academic research. Being a smartphone owner myself, I became increasingly curious on this topic. After
exploring research from the Harvard and Oxford community, I am now positive that smartphones are indeed educational tools.

Richard McCullough, Vice Provost for Research at Harvard University since 2012.

A PERSONAL INTERVIEW WITH LISA ALLEN, RECIPIENT OF THE MAYOR'S COMMUNITY SERVICE MEDAL

LISA ALLEN: MAYOR’S COMMUNITY SERVICE MEDAL RECIPIENT

Lisa Allen, a 54-year-old mother, was awarded the Mayor’s Community Service Medal this past weekend.

Lisa is receiving this award for her exceeding efforts in orchestrating community service events for the Greeniwch High School
communuty, which she always participates in as well.

“I am so honored to be the recipient of such an award,” Lisa says. “I have been involved in community service for three years now
and it has become such a positive part of my week. I never thought I would receive such recognition.”

Lisa has served as a volunteer for Greenwich High School since 2017 and became a member of the board of trustees this past fall.
Lisa has three children, Fraser, Nate, and Stewart, who are 21, 19, and 14, respectively. Nate just graduated from Greenwich High
School this past year.

“I met Lisa when she first started volunteering for Greenwich High School” exclaims Courtney Wilson, a fellow volunteer.
Courtney has been volunteering for six years now and is also a prominent member on the board of trustees. “She always comes in
with a positive attitude and is willing to do anything to help the community. She is one of the most selfless people I have met.”

Another volunteer, Don Freytag, added to that and said, “she has gotten our students involved in more community service
activities than we ever have been a part of. It is truly special.”

Living as a stay-at-home mother, Lisa was looking to get more involved in her circle. She is currently a part of a bible study, is a
team mom for her youngest daughter’s lacrosse team and enjoys working out daily. However, she was looking to get more
involved to keep herself busy.
16
“I thought that getting involved in community service for a school my son loves so dearly would be the perfect
activity,” Lisa states. “I know how strong of a community GHS has, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

When asked about her favorite community service event she has been a part of, she responded with building the
school’s first garden. “Living on a farm currently where I have my own garden, being able to help create another
one at GHS was something I really enjoyed. Besides that, seeing how much the students also loved it is what made it
such a fun experience.”

When questioned with what Lisa was going to do from here, she responded “I am going to stay with my involvement
in GHS. I hope to keep creating and being a part of more and more community service activities during my time as a
volunteer. I want to contribute in making it more enjoyable for the student body, and the community as a whole.”
