FASHION BASICS

ORIGIN OF FASHION
The concept of fashion (costume) started when human beings wanted to differentiate /
distinguish from one another.

BASIC NEEDS DURING THE ANCIENT DAYS –


1. FOOD – HUNTING, GATHERING, GROWING (AGRICULTURE)
2. SHELTER – ROCK SHELTER, CAVES, HUTS
3. CLOTH – ANIMAL SKIN, LEAVES ETC.

UF study of lice DNA shows humans first wore clothes 170,000 years ago.

DIFFERENT WAYS OF DISTINGUISHING THEMSELVES FROM OTHERS –
1. BODY DECORATION –
In the olden days, people use to decorate themselves by body painting/ tattooing.
With animal blood, clay, ash etc.

2. BODY DEFORMATION –
To distinguish themselves from other they change shapes of the body part.
By making scars, cuts, piercing etc. On neck, lips, ears, teeth, nose etc.

3. BODY ORNAMENTATION –
Accessorizing themselves by wearing bones, stones, teeth, nails, feathers, skins etc.

WHY DID HUMAN BEING STARTED WEARING CLOTHES ?


Human being started wearing cloths to protect themselves from physical climatic condition and
psychological protection from the evil.
They covered themselves by wearing animal skins, leaves, shutters of tree barks etc.

INVENTION OF NEEDLE –
 Initially animal skin was wrapped around the body.
 Then lacing techniques were introduced using string.
 Invention of Awl.
 Invention of Needle.

DEVELOPMENT OF SEWING –
Invention of eye needle led to the development of sewing.

FIBRES AND FABRICS USED –
 PLANT FIBRES – Cotton, Linen
 ANIMAL FIBRES – Wool, Silk

DEVELOPMENT OF SPINNING –
Development of spinning was inspired by matted animal hair twisted in strong rope like
structure.
The process of making yarn is called spinning.

DEVELOPMENT OF WEAVING –
Weaving is interlacing of yarn to make clothes.
Weaving technique was inspired by cotton sheath.

 Draping Garments
 Fit Garments

THEORIES OF ORIGIN OF CLOTHING

1. PROTECTION THEORY –
To protect oneself from external factors.
i. PHYSICAL PROTECTION –
Protection from sun, heat, rain, cold, animals and other external factors.
ii. PSYCHOLOGICAL PROTECTION –
 Protection against evil power or gain good luck.
 Jewel, stones, animal bones, nails, teeth, hair etc.
 Particular color like black, while, red etc.
2. MODEST THEORY –
 Shyness against being naked.
 Sense of shame or embarrassment.
 Clothes to cover the body.
3. NARCISSIM THEORY –
Obsessed with oneself.
 Sense of self-adornment
 To attract others mainly opposite sex.
 Body decoration or ornamentation.
4. IMMODEST THEORY –
 To show or emphasize particular part of the body.
 Waist, hip, shoulder, naval, leg etc.
