Histologic Features of Kidney:

- Kidney is divided into two


parts:
a) renal cortex – outer portion
b) renal medulla – inner portion
- made up of medullary
pyramids
- The nephron, also called uriniferous tubule is the functional unit of the kidney
- a normal adult kidney contains millions of nephrons
- nephron consists of two structures:

a) renal corpuscle - made up of glomerulus & Bowman’s capsule

b) renal tubule –
- proximal convoluted tubule,
- loop of Henle,
- distal convoluted tubule, and
- collecting tubule

Histologic Features of Ureter:

- The lining epithelium consists of transitional epithelium – also called urothelium


- Stratified epithelium, 3-6 layers of cells
- The surface cells are called umbrella or dome cells
