PRACTICE PROBLEM

1. A rectangular lot was being measured using a 30m metallic tape which has 6mm too long. The
recorded dimensions where 70.50m long by 37.10m wide.
a. What is the error introduced due to erroneous length of tape? Ans: 0.014m
b. What is the actual dimension of the lot? Ans: actual width = 37.107m
2. A rectangular field was measured using a 100m tape which was actually 10cm too short. The
recorded area was 2500 sq.m. What is the true area of the field? Ans: 2495 sq.m.
3. It is the tension which is applied to a tape supported over two supports which balances the
correction due to pull and due to sag. The application of the tensile force increases the length of
the tape whereas the sag decreases its length, the normal tension neutralizes both corrections,
therefore no correction necessary.
4. (10pts) To determine the stadia interval factor, a transit is set up at a distance (f+c) back of the
zero end of a level base line 240m long, the base line being marked by stakes every 30m. A rod
is then held at successive stations along the base line. The stadia intervals at each location of the
rod are tabulated below. It is required to determine the stadia interval factor of the instrument.

Distance Stadia Intercept Distance Intercept

30 0.297 150 1.482
60 0.597 180 1.776
90 0.885 210 2.073
120 1.188 240 2.367

Ans: f/I = 101.51

5. (10pts) In determining the elevation of point B and the distance between two points A and B, a
transit equipped with s stadia arc is set up at A. The following data are obtained, V = 38, H = 3.0,
stadia interval = 4.30 m, H.I. = 4.2m, line of sight t 8.6m on the rod. The instrument constants
are K = 100, f+c = 1.0. The stadia arc has an index marks of H = 0 and V = 50 for a horizontal line
of sight. The elevation of point A is 125.6 m. Compute the distance AB and the elevation of point
B. Ans: Elev B = 69.2m AB = 418m

6. (10 pts) The following data, solve for the stadia interval factor and the stadia constant for a
transit to be used in a topographic survey.

Distance Measured (m) Rod Reading (m)

50 0.488
100 0.986
200 1.988
300 2.991
400 3.986

Ans: stadia constant= 1.208, stadia interval factor = 99.984

7. In determining the difference in elevation and distance between two points A and B, a transit
equipped with a stadia arc is set up at A and the following data are obtained. V=+10, H=98,
stadia intercept = 3.5m, H.I. =4.5m the line of sight at 5m on the rod. The instrument stadia
constant (f+c) =1 and its stadia interval factor (f/i) = 100. The stadia circle has index marks of
H=100 and V=0 for horizontal sight. Compute the distance between points A and B. If A has an
elevation of 100m above sea level, what is the elevation of B? ans: Elev. of B = 134.6m
