Analog Multiplier IC

IC integration has made the analog multipliers cheap now days. These are intended to do various
mathematical operations. They are used to solve complex signal processing applications apart
from normal computations. Such ICs are commonly used in Process Instrumentation, Servo
mechanisms, control systems, true r.m.s converters, phase angle detectors, frequency multipliers
etc. Data acquisition can be improved through this IC by the way of rationing between the
signals.
Figure shows a basic multiplier IC

As basic multiplier is an active circuit where in the output is proportional to the product of two
input signals. It has dual supply with positive and negative terminals V+ and V-. X and Y are the
input terminals to which the input voltages V1 and V2 are connected respectively.

AD 533 is multiplier IC by analog devices. It is a low cost IC comprising a transconductance
multiplying element, stable reference, an output amplifier on a silicon chip. The feature includes:
1. Simple operation
2. Low temperature drift as low as 0.01% per °C
3. Maximum four quadrant error is below 0.5 %.
4. Basic mathematical operations possible along with op-amp.
