IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

I. Introduction (Time Frame: 30 minutes)

Good day! Our lesson for today is how to present our gathered data aside from using tables. Consider the following
situation.
You open a local magazine and read an article about the 7 lakes of San Pablo City.
Read the following article and try to answer the questions that follow.

The seven lakes of San Pablo City are being developed to become tourist
destinations. The depths and the surface areas are as follows:
Sampaloc (99.21ha;27 m), Calibato (27.18 ha;135m), Bunot (38.16 ha; 23m),
Mohicap (20.49ha;27m), Palakpakin (54.39ha;7.5m), Pandin 23.54 ha;;6.3m),
Yambo (36ha;40m)

Answer the following:

1. Which lake is the deepest? the shallowest?
2. Which lake is the widest? the narrowest?

With the 2 questions above, were you able to find the answers in the article? It
took you how many minutes to answer them? Did you find it difficult to find the answers from the article?

You may have probably found the answers with difficulty. Thus, we need to look for ways to present these data in
such a way that it is easier for the reader or viewer to analyze and interpret them.

D. Development (Time Frame: 100 minutes)

Let us consider the situation below.

The TLE teachers conducted a survey among incoming Grade 9 students. They asked a sample of 200 students with the
following survey question.
SURVEY ON TLE 9 SUBJECTS

In which TLE specialization would you like to enroll?

Cookery Electronics

Dressmaking Nail care

The following frequency distribution was constructed.

TLE Specialization Tally Frequency
Cookery IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – II 42
Dressmaking IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII - III 68
Electronics IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – I 36
Nail care IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII – IIII 54

The given frequency distribution can be presented using Graph. It is a pictorial representation of statistical data. This is
used to represent a set of data to make it easier to understand and easily interpret statistical information. There are two
diagrams with which you may present your frequency distribution – using a bar graph or a pie chart.

Bar Graph

A bar graph is a representation that uses bars or rectangles that show the frequency of each category. Comparison
among frequencies can be easily done by looking at the respective heights of the bars. Gaps between bars are spaced
equally.
Students' Choice of TLE 9 subjects Answer the following.
1. How many students chose Cookery?

Pie Chart
A pie chart is a circular diagram that shows the proportion of each category. Each proportion is usually labeled by
either percent or a fraction. The slices in a pie chart are known as sectors.

How to construct a pie chart?

To complete a pie chart, you need to compute the:
1. percentage of each observation.
2. the number of degrees for the sector or the size of the “piece of slice” for each observation.

TLE specialization Frequency Percentage Number of degrees

Cookery 42 42
x100 = 21% 21% of 360° = 0.21 x 360° = 75.6°
200

Dressmaking 68 68
x100 = 34% 34% of 360° = 0.34 x 360° = 122.4°
200
Electronics 36 36
x100 = 18% 18% of 360° = 0.18 x 360° = 64.8°
200
Nail care 54 54
x100 = 27% 27% of 360° = 0.27x 360° = 97.2°
200
TOTAL 200

With the aid of a protractor and compass, you can construct the circle and sectors needed. Lastly, label each sector with
their corresponding observation and percentage.

Answer the following:

Students' Choice of 1. Which TLE 9 subject has the greatest proportion chosen by
TLE 9 subjects the students?
2. What TLE 9 subject has the least percentage?
3. What percent of the students chose Nail care?
4. How much greater in proportion is Cookery than
Electronics?
Nailcare Cookery

27%
number of their students, which TLE subject should have
the greatest number of teachers?

Another graph that is useful is the line graph.

LINE GRAPH

A line graph is an illustration that shows the association between the independent variable (on the horizontal axis) and
the dependent variable (on the vertical axis). The association can be either an increasing or decreasing trend. Line graph
is useful in presenting data that indicate changes over a period of time.
Consider the following situations and their data set.

Situation 1: Weather Temperature

A Science teacher would like to study how the temperature changes within a day. Thus, he recorded the
temperature readings after every hour. Below was his record.

9am 10 am 11 am 12nn 1pm 2pm 3pm 4pm

23°C 24°C 26°C 27°C 27°C 25°C 24°C 24°C

Using a line graph, you can easily see between what time of the
day the temperature is inclining, declining or retained. Let the
horizontal line be the time reading while the vertical line be the
temperature reading.

Answer the following.

1. What is the lowest temperature between 9am until 4pm?

2. At what time(s) was the highest temperature measured?
3. Between what times there is no change in temperature?
4. What is the increase in temperature between 9am and 11 am?
5. Between what times is there a decline of temperature?

5. 1pm and 3pm

4. 3°C
3pm to 4pm
3. 12nn – 1pm and
2. 12 nn and 1pm
1. 23°C

Situation 2: Motion

A jeepney is moving straight ahead along Maharlika

Highway. You would like to study the motion of the jeepney
by knowing its displacement (from the starting station) at
different times of your travel. Below are the recorded
displacements.

Time Reading Displacement

1: 00 pm 0 m
1: 02 pm 250 m
1: 04 pm 400 m
1: 06 pm 550 m
1: 08 pm 850 m
1: 10 pm 1050 m

Based on the graph,

1. What is displacement at 1:02pm?

2. At what time was the displacement equal to 850m?
3. Between what time periods is the “slant” of the line steepest?
4. Between 1:02 pm and 1:06 pm, what is the change in displacement?
5. 8 minutes
4. 300 m
5. It took how many minutes to reach the displacement of 850 meters? 3. 1:06 to 1:08pm
2. 1:08pm
1. 250m
