ABSTRACT

There’s a short cheesy line we called them “BASTA DRIVER SWEET LOVER”
as the roads Casanova, the nicest talker, generous people and someone who
ensure the passenger’s safety. Behind the most adorable smile on their lips is
the reason why they work so hard and sweat so much , and because of the
recent events, everything changed. Coronavirus Disease ( COVID-19) has been the
world’s biggest problem encountered during the 21 st century. Thus, the study
utilizes Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) with 10 participants in the
study. Furthermore, it aims to explore the lived experiences of the tricycle
drivers during the pandemic, specifically: (1) to describe the lived experiences of
the respondents, (2) to describe the challenges faced of the respondents, and
(3) to describe the ways and means on how they cope up with the situation.
Moreover, based on the study, the findings are the following: tricycle drivers
experienced the pandemic’s positive and negative effects that teach them things
that they must do if it happens again. The respondents faced challenges and
difficulties brought by the pandemic and created their ways to deal with it.
They also learn different coping mechanisms during the pandemic that help
them adjust and face the COVID-19 pandemic.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

A tricycle is a Human powered three-wheeled vehicle, a common transportation

that people needed the most in daily basis here in the Philippines. And we

Should acknowledge them as the roads Casanova, the nicest talker, generous

people and someone who assure the passenger’s safety. There’s a short cheesy

line we called them “ Basta Driver Sweet Lover” which simply makes them

known that any driver is assumed to always be a lover. Tricycle drivers

nowadays are facing the different experiences and challenges during the pandemic

a Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) which is the world’s biggest problem encountered

during the 21st century. According to Zahar (2020) it all started when china’s

health authorities publicized the cause of the growing pneumonia outbreak in

Wuhan China. This outbreak was deemed a pandemic by the world health

organization (WHO, 2020). Covid-19 pandemic laid a deep bare fracture towards

every Filipino’s life and to Philippine socio economic period. For those who

received the aid, there’s a scarce in covering individual and family needs. Many

workers are from the informal sector who are secured by labor laws and their

jobs are cannot be done at home. The Tricycle Drivers paid just by giving

service and their operations are not on the governments radar. Some are not

covered and registered in social services like social security system or (SSS) And

Phil health. (LORENZO,2020). Many have been struggling to put food on the

table but it is the poorest who suffered the most (WAXMAN 2020).

Many of public utility vehicles in Bacolod City Cried for help, saying they have

no more food to feed their families. Some people stopped working due to fear,

what they might get the disease, but some of them continue to use it because

they have a family to feed. They’re saying “we’re not afraid of the virus we

are afraid because we have no money to feed our families “Gutom na kami”

(we are all hungry). Danny tingson a resident of barangay mandalagan and a

tricycle driver for the past 20 years, has already felt the pandemic’s impact. He

said he used to earn 400 a day, but it is now down to 150. He also said

that the money he makes is not enough to feed his family and said, “It can

only buy rice” . And lastly he said that “It sought for us drivers: the virus may

not kill us but hunger and poverty will”. (Rappler, 2020).

Review Of Related Literature

To provide the researchers with comprehensive background, insights and

valuable information on the research problem of this study, a thorough review of

related literature which has relevance to the present study was undertaken.

Review of related literature

The corona virus and the pandemic that occur today affect everyone. Adherence to

government rules that manage the outbreak is not only beneficial for public health, it

also creates a negative impact on others. Due to the implementation of curfews, many

tricycle drivers risked their lives to continue delivering goods and services to the

restrictions. Another problem is that some communities, especially those in high-crime

areas, still haven’t received the relief goods and subsidies they were promised by the

government. ( Bahjin-Imlan, 2020).

The rise of the pandemic has affected many individuals and families. It has also raised

their expenses and delayed their financial stability. This is a time to make changes and

adopt a long term financial plan to ensure their future stability. (Black,2020).

In the first few weeks of 2020, many of us experienced lockdown. It has shifted our

priorities and caused us to rethink how we do things.

There are about 1.7 million registered tricycle units in the Philippines. Around 300,000

of them are in Manila. Due to the outbreak of the Corona virus, many of the country’s

mass transportation systems were suspended, which affected the lives of its

passengers.(Cabrera,2020).

The transportation system is severely affected due to the effects of the pandemic. It

affects the ability of people to move freely. The closure of factories and other

establishments has caused temporary paralysis of people, others did not wake up

earlier than usual and did service until night-time. And because of food has the most

significant charge in everyday life, a deduction for some goods will be the best option.

They also need to work harder to help raise the family’s financial status.

(Canares,2020).

Aside from the food packs, Galang (2020) also stated that the pandemic affected their

daily expenses. For the affected public transport members, lack of income makes them

vulnerable to the illness. According to the International Council For Local Initiatives

South East Asia Secretariat (2020). The city of Jakarta has implemented a special

response plan “for security monitoring and prohibiting the spread of the virus on public

transport”. And by choice, Indonesia strengthens its hygiene excellence instead of

dropping all systems of public transportation. In the Philippines public transport is

suspended in most parts of the country due to the implementation of Enhanced

Community Quarantine. Aside from buses, jeepneys, and trains, all forms of public

transportation are also suspended in the country.

The transport system is one of the industries that has been affected by COVID-19. It

has been economically affected by the sudden lockdown in different countries. Even

though various laws and regulations were implemented to prevent the exploitation of

people with special needs, their preference toward transportation could change that can

lead to people avoiding using public transportation due to the large crowds. Tourless

goods became popular in china due to its various advantages. And in India they’re

pushing more reliable services. (Harikumar,2020).

Due to the protests by passengers, some of the tricycles were operating without a

license due to the poor living conditions of the tricycle drivers, some firms have

authorized them. It also includes not being an opportunist when it comes to charging a

high fare. ( Lalu, 2020).

Due to the closure of public transport in Manila, only tricycle drivers have a permit to

continue operating. Due to the low income, many of them resorted to working

overtime. They earn around PHP25 to PHP50 depending on the distance. According to

61-year-Old trike driver Alfredo Perez, they used to have earnings of PHP800 a day

before the pandemic, and now only PHP 200 is the total amount they gain for everyday

ferry since July. It’s needed to double their work and have at least 17-18 hours of

plying to get the amount required to support the family’s daily expenses.

(Aquino,2020).

According to Bleakley (2020), people have a hard time over the past several months

during the quarantine, And for parents, it’s hard to make their children entertained.

During this time, parents say that they’ve found some ways to bond with their kids.

They say that they’ve also learned some new skills and have fun doing it.

The outbreak of the corona virus has raised concerns about the financial stability of

businesses. Although staying at home may seem like the best option for some, it can be

very challenging to earn extra cash. There are many ways to earn money from home.

(Money Tips, 2020).

METHODOLOGY

Research Methods

The researchers decided to conduct qualitative research to satisfy the dissertation’s

aim, especially with the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach.
Qualitative research addresses obtaining data through informal communication.

Through this study, the researchers were able to gain an in-depth understanding
of the participants lived experiences without resorting to sensationalizing their
findings. This method allows them to fully explore their lived experiences without
resorting to sensationalizing or holding back their findings. (Alase,2017)

Research Design

This research with its IPA approach, manage information most appropriate for
small samples. This study explores each participants’ complex experiences,
challenges, and coping mechanisms or strategies to understand these giving
elements will be emphasized and develop to more broad representations. This IPA
is an essential methodology for examining concepts that are intricate (Smith &
Osborn, 2014).

Respondents of the study

This study focuses on Tricycle drivers as key informants. The researchers defined
tricycle drivers as those who are hardworking and who will ensure the
passenger’s safety. The sample of tricycle drivers in their middle age, and some
of them are already senior citizens. The researchers gathered a selection at
San Roque Baao Camarines Sur’s tricycle terminal in Poblacion Baao Camarines Sur.

Through direct visits, the researchers asked the participants for their consent to
be part of the study. They also explained the study’s goals and procedures.

Participants were also asked to be sympathetic to each other. A formal interview

happens once it was all settled. All interviews were audio-recorded to assist the
researchers in transcribing the messages thoroughly.

Instrument of the Study

The interview is an integral part of a project. It is used to gather information

about the study. Before the start of the research, the instructor thoroughly
reviewed the guide questions to ensure that the study is suitable for the said
research. The researchers then asked the respondents to be comfortable and
free to express their feelings in every answer. After the interview, researchers
begin to collect the data.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the results and discussion of the In-Depth Interview
conducted on the study “ The Lived Experiences of the Tricycle Drivers In
Poblacion Baao Camarines Sur During the Pandemic. All gathered data is
presented in tabular form.

The respondents’ demographic profile shown in Table 1 consists of the age and
the years of the respondent’s being a tricycle driver.

Ten tricycle drivers living in Baao Camarines Sur participated as a respondent in

the study.

responses supported by their raw and untampered statements. The subordinate

group’ tabulated frequency are arranged from the types of the main themes in
descending pattern. There are responses from the views of the respondents to
support the presentation of the result.

The Experiences of Tricycle Drivers

Participants shared how their lives have changed since the onset of this pandemic. They
said they have been making adjustments because they need to do extra jobs to support
their families. They’ve been dealing with the changes they’re experiencing, such as the
rarely trips of the tricycles and the uncertainly involving financial situation. As illustrated
in Table 2, five subordinate groups in the lived experiences came from the respondents’
statements. The lived experiences that appeared from the data are the following: family
bonding, personal growth, financial problems, an extra source of income, adjustments.

Table 2. Experiences themes

Most participants stated that their families spend more time together than they usually
do despite the growing pandemic. They got the time to invest in their personal growth.
As shown in table 3, there are several themes under positive experiences that emerged
from the participants’ responses. The festive themes identified from the data include
family bonding, personal growth and positive emotions.

Family bonding

According to Bleakley (2020), the quarantine has been a hard time for everyone.
It’s hard to get back to normal, especially for parents. While it’s been a
challenging time for parents to spend quality time with their kids, they found
some ways to bond through playing games and watching movies.

One of the participant stated that they have positive benefits from their families.
They include the opportunity to strengthen their relationships and improve their
health.

“Hmmm… Mahirap yung naging buhay nung pagpasok ng pandemya.

Kaya lang syempre meron din naman kasi nakasama mo yung pamilya mo sa bahay
nagkaroon ka ng mas maraming oras para maturuan yung mga anak sa pagtatanim ng
mga gulay, halaman na maaring gawing libangan. Yung mga anak ko natuto sila kung
pano magtanim ng mapagkakakitaan ganon yung kagandahan.”

Personal Growth

For the participants, this pandemic bought them to personal growth. The Need to
provide for their family made them more focused on vital things. It should be their
everyday need comes to be priority. According to Tricycle Driver 1:

“kung sa ano hindi naman lahat ng nangyayari disadvantage pero may advantage
padin kagaya ko, hindi naman talaga ako totally kumakayod para sa pambuhay buhay.
Kumayod lang talaga ako para makaipon pa ako ng pera. So, dahil sa pandemic nagka
online class na tinatawag, sobra sobra pa ang oras sa isang araw kaya pwedeng
makapag work, yan yung isang advantage na natutunan ko na parang nagkaroon ako
ng maraming oras para makaipon.

Financial Problems

Participants had been through negative experiences such as financial problems and
fear because of feeling overwhelmed by what could happen because of the pandemic.
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Region V
Division of Camarines Sur

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

Participants also stated that even though the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on their
families are minimal, they will still affect their household finances for a long time to
come. They said that it’s hard to plan their daily living due to the financial instability.
According to Tricycle Driver 2:

“ kulang na kulang dalawang beses na lang kaming kumakain sa isang araw dahil sa
walang byahe.

Tricycle Driver six also shared the same experience. It’s hard for them to earn money
for the daily expenses. Mainly they have children who need support for their education.

“ Marami yung naging pagbabago kasi yung pila namin alternate, kapag hindi namin
pila mas lalong mahina yung kinikita namin. Okay na ang kumita ng 200 o 300 pesos.
Kung pila naman minsan kumikita rin naman ng 400, pero kulang padin kasi may
maintenance padin sa tricycle .

Another participant shared that the pandemic really hit’s different when it comes to
financial stability.

“ Kulang na kulang. Kaya budget budget nalang minsan at pambayad sa mga

pinagkautangan.”

The increasing number of people affected by the pandemic will continue to affect our
daily lives. This time is not long from future days and years, but it gives you a chance
to change and adjust your financial goals to guarantee your financial stability
(Becu,2020).

Fear

Uncertainly is a challenging emotion to handle. People have no idea how long it might
get. There are a lot of misinformation out there that leads to fear (Robinson & Smith,
2020).

Like many other respondents, the participant stated that they are afraid and worried
about the effects of the virus on their families. According to the participant:

“Marami po ang nawalan ng trabaho bukod don, kahit hanggang tatlo lang pasahero
medyo malimit na ang tao ngayon dahil madami ang bawal lumabas kagaya ng mga
Senior Citizens, Minors kaya hindi na masyadong madami ang mga pasahero na pwede
mong pasakayin kaya pahirapan na ang pagpapasakay ng pasahero ngayon dahil
umiiwas din na ma expose sa covid-19.

The Challenges of Tricycle Drivers

Due to the increasing number of infections caused by the virus, many participants
experience various challenges. Ten participants said they were adjusting to new lifestyle
changes, and they were worried about uncertainly.

Table 3. Challenges Themes

Challenges Frequency

Adjustments to lifestyle changes

Changing the way we live is very challenging and it can be hard to adjust to the new
normal. They said that the interruption of a work schedule due to the outbreak could
cause various adjustments. According to tricycle driver 3:

“ Halos kalahati yung kinikita kumbaga dati kumikita nang 900 ngayon nagiging 450
pesos nalang kada araw minsan nga mababa pa dyan kapag masyadong matumal ang
pasahero”.

Tricycle driver four also shared his thoughts about the rare trips and rules that each
tricycle drivers are obeying.

“ Mahirap kasi kung dati magsasawa ka sa pasahero, kahit pa pitik pitik lang, minsan
nga hapon na kung lumabas para mamasada pero yung perang pumapasok Malaki

padin. Pero ngayon masyado nang pahirapan kung hindi mag t’tyaga walang pangkain
ang pamilya”.

Tricycle driver five bravely shared that being a tricycle driver is not his full-time job:

“ahhh,,,, ako kasi nung nagsimula ang pandemic at wala namang face-to-face class at
online class lang naman ang ginagawa, nag ano ako, nag-shift ako kung ano yung
paraan para makatulong ako sa mga magulang ko. Naisipan kong magpasada para
makadagdag sa pang araw-araw na gastusin sa bahay.

Tricycle driver, who is a solo parent, proudly said that I always do my very best to
support the needs of my children:

“Kung tutuusin kaya naring itaguyod (laughs) kasi kahit papano binigyan din ng
makakain at pera ang mga anak ko ng lola nila na nasa ibang bansa para makatulong
din sa pang araw-araw. Kaya yung kinikita ko sa pang araw-araw itinatabi ko na lamang
para sa mga bayarin sa bahay at mga iba pang kailangan.”

According to staff therapist, Nutten (2020), the COVID-19 pandemic caused severe and
significant changes to our daily lives, changes that rarely happened to every one of us.
This process can be challenging and exciting. It can be an adjustment to a new normal,
but it can also be an adventure.

Worrying about uncertainly

Uncertainly is a challenging emotion to handle. People have no idea how long it might
get. There are a lot of misinformation out there that leads to fear (Robinson & Smith,
2020). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one in ten respondents experienced tension
regarding their health and environment.

“ Mahirap. Oo kase unang una magiging aware ka sa pasahero mo. Hindi ka basta
pasakay lang nang pasakay ng pasahero kase syempre kahit papaano iingatan mo rin
yung katawan mo na wag mahawa sa sakit kasi may pamilya ka pang uuwian
pagkatapos mamasada. Kaya sapalaran lang talaga ngayon pagdating sa pamamasada

ng tricycle. Basta kumita lang ng kahit pangkain ng pamilya ayos na basta’t walang
magugutom at magkakasakit.

The Coping Mechanisms of Tricycle Drivers

This superordinate theme discusses how the respondents cope with the difficulties
they had been facing since the pandemic outbreak. Listed in table 4 are the subordinate
themes that emerged within the interviews. Six out of ten participants had another
source of income that will meet their family’s everyday expenses and surely handle
unexpected bills. One out of ten participants shared that being positive is a must,
especially with this kind of difficulty.

Positivity in life

Positive thinking helps us to manage stress and opens new possibilities. One of the
participant said that they should think positively in their daily lives regardless of the
difficulties they face. Tricycle driver 7 shared:

“ Tiyaga lang naman talaga yung pinakamainam na paraan ngayon kase kung
hindi magtitiyaga walang mangyayari. May kasabihan nga tayo na “kapag may
tiyaga may nilaga”.

According to Foss (2020), while there is life, there’s hope. Despite your anxiety, you
can still find hope amid the pandemic. Learn some skills that will help you manage your
confidence during though times. Doing so will help you be more flexible and less
stressed.

Another Source of Income

Many things are outside of control, especially when it comes to money. Most of the
participants said they’ve had a hard time putting food on table. They’ve resorted to
working multiple jobs to support their families. They live in harsh conditions and work
to survive. According to tricycle number 1:

“Ahhh.. so, ayun na nga maganda yung tanong mo kasi ako Media Arts ako nagagamit
ko dito yung skills ko gaya ng sa Photography, video creator yung mga nag aano sa
kasal, yan ang medyo nakakatulong saakin ngayon para makaipon dahil sa pag
pipicture.”

Tricycle driver number 8 also shared that they’ve done selling some used items:

“Yung anak ko tinulungan ako para maibenta yung mga gamit na hindi ko masyadong
kailangan para makadagdag narin sa gastusin sa pang araw-araw kaya ayon noong
walang biyahe yun yung pinagkaabalahan namin para may pagkakitaan.

Also a tricycle driver proudly shared his story during the times that they were lack of
financial:

“Ehh, noong natigil talaga yung pamamasada at humina ang pasahero, nag isip kami ng
pwede naming mga lutuin na maipagbebenta at nagtinda rin kami ng mga seedlings ng
gulay na pwedeng itanim sa bakuran ng bahay para nang sa ganon may pumasok padin
na pera kahit walang pasada, bagaman pang kain lang sa pang araw-araw yung kinikita
namin sa pagbebenta malaking tulong parin naman ito.”

The outbreak of the corona virus has raised concerns about the financial stability of
many individuals. For many, this is the time to start looking for new ways to make
money. (Money Tips, 2020). According to Fenol (2020), around 2,000 motorcycle and
tricycle drivers in Manila will be able to use Grab’s food and package delivery services
after being affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The new drivers will join the Grab
network and operate under the company’s various services.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, FINDING, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

This part shows the summarization and discussion.

This study focuses on the experiences of tricycle drivers during the COVID-19
pandemic. This article analyzed the various factors that affected the lives of tricycle
drivers. It covered their various challenges, as well as the coping mechanisms they
used to overcome them. This study was conducted through an interview style that was
conducted in a personal and conversational manner. The participants expanded these
three significant themes into subthemes. The subthemes were then identified and
discussed further in this section.

Finding

In the results chapter, various experiences, positive and negative, were reported. Most
of them said they have been facing difficulties in their lives due to the outbreak of the
pandemic. Despite this, they have the will to continue providing their services. Being a
tricycle driver is hard work, especially in today’s world. Due to the fear of getting sick,
many tricycle drivers stopped taking trips. This led to low income for them. Having low
income is not enough to support their essential needs and other expenses.

Due to the nature of pandemic, families were able to have some quality time together.
Also had a chance, an opportunity to grow as a person. Many participants had been
through a lot of struggles. This pandemic teaches them that they can change their lives
forever. Despite the difficult situation, they still choose to fight for their lives.

For the respondents, the biggest challenge they faced was the adjustment to a new
lifestyle. Adjustments are caused by the sudden transition from our daily living to a
new normal. As part of social distancing, tricycle drivers and passengers are required to
wear proper facemasks and face shields. They are also required to provide alcohol to
their passengers. They also mentioned that it is their daily income that they rely on

before they start their work day. As for the participants, the pandemic challenges their
positive attitude in life. Participants also shared that they became more flexible during
the crisis. Through the pandemic, participants learned how to deal with their struggles.
They also had another source of income to support their daily expenses. They are
responsible for providing for their family.

The various subthemes of this study collectively served to reveal the various
experiences of the tricycle drivers during the pandemic. The rise of pandemic has
eased the world’s financial situation. The rage of coronavirus has stopped the world.
The onset of the pandemic was enormous, but life went on.

CONCLUSION

According to the research findings, tricycle drivers experienced the pandemic’s positive
and negative effects that teach them things that they must do if it happens again. They
also faced challenges and difficulties brought by he pandemic and created their ways to
deal with it. They also learn different coping mechanisms during the pandemic that
helped them adjust and face the COVID-19 pandemic properly. Moreover, by that, they
survive and sustain their lives even there is pandemic.

RECOMMENDATION

The study also encourages the local and national governments to improve the
conditions of tricycle drivers. They should help our tricycle drivers in various ways to
improve their lives. They should develop plans and programs that will help them
become more creative and resourceful. The tricycle drivers do not only rely on the
government for support, they also find other ways to make living. They may also try
different things like putting snacks inside their tricycles to attract the passengers.
Sometimes in life, we need a little creativity and passion so we can have a better life.
We should also be responsible for our actions and decisions. This study serves as a
baseline for future studies related to the lives of tricycle drivers during the pandemic.
Future studies may also look into the lives of tricycle drivers.
