FUEL SYSTEM – INTRODUCTION

General

The fuel system stores fuel and delivers fuel to the engines and
APU. Additional components and controls in the system provide
rapid fueling and defueling capabilities. The tanks, lines, fittings,
and operating components in the system are compatible with all
fuels meeting the engine and APU manufacturer's specifications.

All fuel is stored within vented areas of the wings and wing
center section. The fuel storage area is divided into three integral
fuel tanks: a three-cavity center tank and two wing tanks (tanks
No. 1 and 2). All three tanks utilize a sealed-wing structure to
retain the fuel. The center tank has a secondary fuel barrier
coating on the outer surfaces of the upper panel and front spar
for additional protection against fuel leaks into pressurized areas
of the airplane.

FUEL SYSTEM – PRESSURE FUELING SYSTEM

General

The pressure fueling system supplies a fast procedure to fill the

fuel tanks in the airplane.

The refuel station, found on the right wing leading edge, has a
refuel panel, fueling receptacle manifold, fueling power control
switch, and a fueling receptacle. Three panel lights are installed,
one on each side of the control panel and one outboard of the
fueling receptacle, to supply lighting for the fueling bay.

Pressure fueling shutoff valves are installed between the fueling

manifold and its branch lines. The branch lines direct fuel into
each fuel tank. The pressure fueling shutoff valves control the
flow of fuel from the fueling manifold to its branch lines. A
defueling valve connects the engine fuel feed manifold with the
pressure fueling manifold.

The refuel panel (P15) controls the fueling system. The refuel
panel has all the switches and indicators necessary to do the
refuel operation.

Each fuel tank has a fueling float switch to supply automatic

fueling shutoff when the tank is full. The refuel quantity indicators
are used to fill the fuel tanks to a predetermined level when a full
fuel load is not necessary.

FUEL SYSTEM – PRESSURE FUELING SYSTEM

Operation

The pressure fueling system operates on 28v dc power. 115v ac

power is used for the fuel quantity indicating system. The dc
power is supplied to the fueling shutoff valves through relays and
the fueling float switches. When a full fuel load is necessary, the
fueling float switches close the fueling shutoff valves
automatically when the fuel tanks are full. When a partial fuel
load is necessary, the refuel quantity indicators are monitored,
and the fueling shutoff valves are closed when you manually put
the fueling shutoff valve switches to OFF when the selected fuel
quantity is reached.

Before the start of the refuel operation, push each light cover to
test the fueling valve open lights. If the refuel quantity indicators
are used, they are tested for operation by actuating the fueling
indicator test switch. Operation of the switch will cause the refuel
quantity indicator to show zero. After you do the check of the
instruments, the the fueling hose is connected. When you open
the applicable fueling shutoff valve it makes the airplane ready to
receive fuel. The start of the pumping operation pressurizes the
fueling lines, and permits fuel to flow into the fuel tanks.

FUEL SYSTEM – FUEL DISTRIBUTION

Purpose System Description

The distribution system allows fuel to be supplied to the engines The distribution system utilizes pumps, valves and tubing for
and APU. In addition, the system can be used for defueling the engine and APU feed. The fueling station is used for defueling
tanks and for fuel transfer between the tanks. and transfer operations which are only possible on the ground.

fuel that you cannot use in the center tank by approximately 15
gallons. A fuel scavenge shutoff valve, a fuel scavenge jet pump
and a fuel scavenge flow indicator/check valve (not installed on
all airplanes) are installed on the front spar of the No. 1 tank. A
fuel scavenge transfer line goes along into the center tank. On
airplanes without a fuel scavenge flow indicator/check valve, a
flapper check valve is installed on the fuel scavenge transfer line
in the center tank.

Operation

When the two fuel boost pumps in the center tank are turned off,
the fuel scavenge shutoff valve is opened, and a 20-minute timer
in the M528 engine accessory unit is started.

When you open the fuel scavenge shutoff valve it lets the fuel
boost pumps for the No. 1 tank move fuel through the fuel
scavenge jet pump. The fuel scavenge jet pump causes a low
pressure in the fuel scavenge transfer line to the center tank. On
airplanes with fuel scavenge flow indicator/check valve, fuel is
drained from the center tank through the fuel scavenge flow
indicator/check valve into the No. 1 tank. The indicator can be
monitored on the ground, to make sure that fuel is moves into the
No. 1 tank. On airplanes without a fuel scavenge flow
indicator/check valve, fuel is moved from the center tank through
the flapper check valve into the No. 1 tank.
