OXYGEN
CREW SYSTEM 35--10
CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM
Oxygen is supplied to the crew members in the flight compartment from a high-
pressure cylinder located along the right side of the forward equipment center.

Pressure is reduced before it is routed to the flight compartment, by a regulator

attached to the bottle neck.

A shutoff valve on the cylinder, permits oxygen to be turned off for cylinder
replacement or work on the system.

Each crew member station has a diluter demand mask regulator.

Each is stored in a container and can be tested without removal.

Cylinder pressure is shown by a direct reading indicator on the cylinder and by

an indicator on the ful panel that receives its input information for a transducer
on the regulator.

The transducer also gives an input to Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting
System (EICAS) computer which provides a digital pressure readout on the
pilots P2 panel cathode ray tube (CRT).

OXYGEN
CREW SYSTEM 35--10
CREW OXYGEN CYLINDER
General
The crew oxygen cylinder is located outboard of the nose wheel well along the
right side of the fuselage in the forward equipment center.
It has 114 cubic feet volume.
The normal cylinder charge is
1850 PSI at 70° F (2l°C).
Full cylinder charge is set at 2000 psi to compensate for gas temperature
increase associated with the charging process from 100 psi to 1850 psi.
The cylinder may be removed/installed or it can be charged from a remote fill
panel.
A frangible disk in a fitting on the cylinder neck provides for thermal relief at
2500 to 2775 psi.
Also located in the neck is a shutoff valve to shut off oxygen flow at the
cylinder, a direct reading pressure indicator, connections for the regulator and
the thermal relief overboard discharge vent line.

Removal/Installation
The retaining rack to support the cylinder has rollers to allow forward and aft-
movement of the cylinder. The cylinder is secured by two retaining rings.
The aft ring is fixed to the structure.
The forward ring can be released by loosening the nut on the ”T” bolt that holds
the ring to the retaining strap.
When lose the ”T” bolt can be slipped out of the slot in the strap.
The ring is then removed by moving the top forward and lifting if off the pivot-
Pin.
A lanyard attached to the ring and rack keeps the ring from being misplaced.

CREW PRESSURE REDUCING REGULATOR
Ports
The regulator Inlet port attaches to the cylinder neck.
It receives high pressure oxygen from the cylinder (1850 PSI).
The outlet port connects to the flight compartment supply line.
The output pressure of the regulator is a nominal 70 psi.
The fill port connects to the fill line from the remote fill panel.
High pressure oxygen from the panel charges the cylinder.
Valve Stem
The valve stem in the regulator is controlled by two coiled and one over--center
spring.
When downstream pressure decreases, the force on the diaphragm and over--
center spring decreases, the valve stem opens.
Increased downstream pressure closes the valve stem.
Downstream pressure is regulated to 70 psi.

Relief Valve
The relief valve to relieve excessive pressure is spring loaded closed. It will
begin to open at 120 psi and is fully open at 160 psi.
Charging Valve
The charging valve is spring loaded open.
When the cylinder is charged to 2000 psi, the pressure overcomes the spring
forces and closes the valve.
The check valve prevents back--flow from the cylinder.
Pressure Transducer
The oxygen pressure transducer on the regulator provides pressure signals to

CREW OVERBOARD DISCHARGE FITTING
The overboard discharge fitting is located outboard of the nose gear wheel
well on the right side.
The fitting extends through the fuselage skin and is attached to the oxygen
cylinder thermal discharge line.
The fitting has an o--ring seal, green indicator disk and snap ring.
During the walk around inspection the disk is checked. If the disk is missing
the cylinder should be checked for discharge indications.
The o--ring seal keeps out moisture and should be installed prior to replacing
the indicator disk. The snap ring holds the disk in place in the fitting.

MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
The mask / regulator box assembly can be replaced as a unit by the four quick
release fasteners on the top.

”In--Place” Check Out

The mask/regulator can be tested without removal from the storage box.
Push the reset/test lever In the direction of the arrow until the painted white
band appears.
The flow indicator (blinker) should turn yellow momentarily then black again
showing the regulator is leak tight.
Hold the reset/test lever depressed and push the ”press--to--test” knob on
the regulator through the opening between the doors. The blinker should again
turn yellow. This checks the regulator demand mechanism.

NOTE: MICROPHONE ELECTRICAL INTEGRITY CAN BE CHECKED

BY LISTENING TO AIRFLOW NOISE THROUGH THE
COMMUNICATION SET.
Release both controls. The reset LEVER should return to position covering
the white band and closing the valve.

PASSENGER OXYGEN SYSTEM
Oxygen is supplied from chemical generators to all passenger seats,
attendant seats and lavatories.
The individual passenger masks can be deployed electrically either by a switch
on the pilots overhead panel P5 (manual) or by the aneroid switch on the P19
panel (automatic).

An amber light on the pilots panel illuminates when either manual or automatic
deployment has been Initiated, and ”Passenger Oxygen On” message
appears on EICAS.
Individual mask storage modules can be opened manually.
When the oxygen module doors have opened, the masks deploy in front of the
passengers.
The number of masks per seat will depend upon customer option.
The chemical oxygen generators are manually activated by pulling on the
mask.
A lanyard from the mask releases the firing pin on the generator starting the
oxygen flow.

PASSENGER SYSTEM LATCH MECHANISM
S119 passenger Oxygen Altitude Pressure Switch
The 14,000 foot altitude pressure switch used to automatically deploy the
oxygen masks is located on the P19 Panel, above the passenger compartment
ceiling, forward left side.
It is accessed by raising the first sculptured ceiling panel above the left aisle.

Passenger System Latch Mechanism

Oxygen module door latch mechanism is normally activated by a solenoid
striker mechanism (latch actuator) but can be manually released.
The solenoid striker mechanism Is independent of the door latch.
When 28 volts dc power is applied to the solenoid, it releases a striker In the
door latch actuator which pushes on the door latch mechanism.
The solenoid is controlled by the ”PASS OXY” switch on the pilots overhead
panel (P5) or the 14,000 foot altitude pressure switch (S119) on the P19 panel.
The door latch extends across the door width.
A slot between the door and the passenger service unit panel provides access
for manual opening by using a thin instrument to push up on the latch arm.
This action will not cause the striker to extend and the spring loaded door latch
will return to the latched position when released.

OXYGEN
PASSENGER 35--20
CHEMICAL OXYGEN GENERATOR
Core Reaction
Oxygen is generated inside the generator by the chemical reaction of sodium
chlorate and iron. NaCl03 + Fe = NaCL + FeO + O2.
The core is shaped to provide maximum flow at starting.
Release/Firing Pin and Filter
The release pin, which holds the firing pin in the armed position, Is connected
to the masks by lanyards.
When any mask Is pulled down to face level the release pin is pulled out by the
lanyard releasing the firing pin.
The firing pin strikes the primer which starts the reaction in the generator.
A filter in the generator cools the oxygen and filters out any contaminates.
Manifoid and Relief Valve
A manifold on the generator allows hoses to be connected to the generator.
Either two, three or four hoses can be connected depending on the size of the
generator.
The manifoid will rotate 360 degrees to prevent hose crimping.
A relief valve on the generator will release pressure at 50 psi.
Normal internal pressure is 10 psi.
General
Caution should be used in handling the generators as once started there is no
means to stop it. Surface temperatures of the generator may get as high as
450 degrees F. A heat sensitive tape on the generator turns black when the
generator is used and provides a visual expended indication.
Oxygen Flow Profile
For Training Purposes Only

Pulí oxygen flow is delivered from the generator after 10 seconds.

Sufficient oxygen is supplied from the generator to meet the requirements of
descent in emergency situations.
