AIRPLANE LIGHTING
Purpose
The lighting systems provide illumination throughout the airplane:
1. to insure visibility of instruments and controls in the flight compartment,
2. for passenger safety, comfort and convenience,
3. to insure the airplane is visible and
4. for the convenience of the maintenance/servicing personnel.
Functional Description
Airplane lighting systems are divided into 5 groups as follows:
S Flight compartment lights: flight compartment lighting illuminates the control
cabin work areas and control panels.
S Passenger compartment lights:
-- passenger compartment lights illuminate ceiling, sidewalls, seats, aisles,
entryways, lavatories and galley areas. Call lights and passenger infor-
mation signs provide messages for the flight crew, flight attendants, and
passengers.
S Cargo and service compartment lights illuminate maintenance, servicing
and cargo loading areas during ground operations.
S Exterior lights provide visibility to other airplanes in flight, and illuminate the
airplane, landing and taxiing areas during flight and ground operations.
S The emergency lighting system provides illumination in the event of an
electric power failure.

FLIGHT COMPARTMENT LIGHTS

Purpose
The flight compartment lighting system is designed for normal or emergency
illumination of critical and non critical lighting components. The lighting systems
are controlled by the four panels shown.
System Description
Integral panel lights, switch lights and instrument lights are controlled by
various switches mostly located on the P5 panel. Annunciator lights are
controlled by the master dim and test circuits. Area illumination is provided by
floodlights, dome lights, and map lights. Chart lights illuminate letdown plate
holders, and utility lights (not shown) illuminate where needed since they are
portable. The purpose of the override light switch is to provide dome and flood
lighting immediately for pilots if they are near lightning discharges. The override
light minimizes the vision loss if lightning illuminates the cockpit.

The dimmable fluorescent lamps provide lighting for normal instrument panel
illumination.
The lighting fixtures are mounted on the underside of the glareshield above the
P1, P2 and P3 main pilot’s instrument panels.

PANEL DIMMER CONTROL UNITS

Locations
Panel / floodlight dimmer control units provide starting and dimming voltages
for the fluorescent and incandescent lights in the flight compartment. The units
are on the forward end of the aisle stand under the P2 panel and outboard
sides of the pilot’s leg room areas.
The dimmer control units for the aisle stand are in the aisle stand module and
under the floor next to the aisle Stand. The underfloor units can be reached
from the main equipment center.
Overhead panel and instrument panel dimmer units are attached to the drip
shield on each side of the P5 panel and in the P11 circuit breaker panels.
The right side panel has one light dimmer control unit.

All lights are controlled from the flight compartment.
Wing Illumination Lights
Wing illumination lights are high intensity quartz halogen light assemblies
mounted on each side of the fuselage. A plano lens divides the light from a
single lamp into two beams:
S one beam lights the engine;
S the other lights the wing.
A single on / off switch on overhead panel P5 controls both light assemblies.

Landing and Runway Turnoff

Two high intensity landing lights are on the nose landing gear. One high intensi-
ty landing light is in each wing root strakelet. Each wing light and the nose gear
lights are controlled by separate on / off switches on overhead panel P5.
Landing gear level position sensing switch changes the brightness of the wing
landing lights from dim to bright when the landing gear is lowered. Another
similar switch turns on the nose gear landing lights when the gear is down and
locked.

Runway turnoff and taxi lights are high intensity quartz halogen lights. The taxi
lights, mounted on the nose gear fixed section, illuminates the ground ahead of
the airplane. A runway turnoff light in each wing root strakelet illuminates the
ground ahead and to the side of the airplane. Each light is controlled by a sepa-
rate on/off switch on overhead panel P5.

Logo Lights
Four logo lights are installed in the horizontal stabilizer and are positioned to
illuminate the vertical stabilizer and rudder. They are controlled by an alternate
action switch/light on the overhead panel P5.
