In this module, you will be acquainted with Introduction to Computer. The scope of this
module enables you to use it in many different learning situations. The activities are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course

What is It

Computer is an electronic device used in almost every field even where it is


most unexpected. It is made up of two things one is the hardware and other is software. All
physical components of computer like keyboard, mouse, monitor etc comes under the
hardware whereas all the programs and languages used by the computer are called
software. These days computers are the tools for not only engineers and scientists but also
they are being used by millions of people around the world.
What is Computer?

A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the


ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You may already know that you can use a
computer to type documents, send email, play games, and browse the Web. You can also
use it to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos.

Charles Babbage is an English inventor and he taught math at cambridge


university. He invented a viable mechanical computer equivalent to modern
digital computers called the Difference and Analytical Engine. And he also
called the father of Modern Computer.

PARTS OF COMPUTER

1. MONITOR- is an output device that displays information in pictorial form. It usually


comprises the display device, circuitry, casing and power supply. Old monitors used a
cathode ray tube (CRT).

2. KEYBOARD- is one of the primary input device used with a computer. Similar to an
electric typewriter, a keyboard is composed of buttons that create letters, numbers,
and symbol’s, as well as perform other functions.

Parts of the Keyboard

 Function keys are numbered F1 through F12. They are located either at the top or
along the side of your keyboard. It performs different tasks depending on the program
being used.
 Alphanumeric Keys -This is the main typing area of the keyboard. It is used to type text
and special characters as well as numbers. The keys are positioned much the same
way as the typewriter keys except for additional keys such as the shift and control key.

Your left-hand fingers should be placed over the A,S,D, and F keys. The right hand fingers
should be placed over the J, K, L, and keys. These keys are considered the home row
keys. Your thumbs should either be in the air or very lightly touching the spacebar key.

 Arrow Keys- Keyboard keys located in-between the standard keyboard and the
numeric pad on the majority of all keyboards and move the cursor or insertion point
right, left, up, or down.

 Numeric Key- It is called as a “Calculator” of the


keyboard. It has the numeric and math symbols needed to
make computations.

3. MOUSE- is a small handheld input device that controls a computer screens cursor or
pointer in conjunction with the way it is a moved on a flat surface.

4. CPU-(Central Processing Unit) is the primary component of a computer that processes


instructions. It runs the operating system and applications, constantly receiving input
from the user or active software programs. It process the data and produces output,
which may stored by an application or displayed on the screen.

5. PRINTER- is an external hardware device responsible for taking computer data and
generating a hard copy of that data.

Productivity Software
It is also called, personal or office productivity
software, is a set of essential tools we use to produce
documents, presentations, spreadsheets, charts, and graphs.
Nowadays, developers are offering productivity software
online. The features are limited; however, these can be
conveniently accessed by users by logging-in their accounts
using their desktop or any mobile device.
Another development is the feature for collaborative works.
With this, users can work together at the same time on the
same file. Here are examples of Office productivity software:

Word 2016

Microsoft Word 2016 is a word processing application for creating documents


that has text and graphic. The common outputs are letters, reports, brochures,
posters, and other types of publication.

New Features of Word 2016

Word 2016 has added features for us to produce better outputs:

A. The Tell Me search bar is a versatile tool to search functions and features that we need
as create our work. It is located among the tabs in the ribbon.
B. The Smart Lookup feature is designed to deliver useful information about content in our
document.
NEW FEATURES OF MS WORD 2016

1. Quick Access Toolbar- It is used to access commonly used commands, such as save,
Undo, and Redo. We can customize it by clicking the drop-arrow and select the
commands that we want to add in the toolbar.
2. File Name- It displays the file name of the current document that we are editing.
3. Microsoft Account- It provides us more convenience to access or upload our files
online.
4. Ribbon display option and window button- These buttons are used to manage our
ribbon and window. The ribbon display options include auto-hide ribbon, show tabs,
and commands
5. Ribbon- It houses all commands when using word. It has tabs containing the different
commands that are arranged according to their functions.
6. Rulers- These are our guides when positioning the content of our document.
7. Insertion Point or Cursor- It directs the location where we type our text or Insert
pictures.
8. Document- It is where we enter and edit our text and graphics.
9. Vertical Scroll Bar- It is used to scroll up or down of our document.
10. Status bar-It contains information about the current document such as the page
number and word count. It also has three (3) different documents views: Read mode,
Print layout, and web Layout. The slide is useful to zoom in or zoom out the current
document.
