Title of the Lesson: Operation on Functions and Problem-Solving Involving

Functions

Activity 1: Analyze and Solve

Directions/Instructions: Read, analyze, and understand each problem set. Use a
separate sheet of paper for your answers.
A. Determine whether the given statement or situation is a function or not.
(1 point each)
1. One to one correspondence
2. One to many correspondences
3. Many to one correspondence
4. The rule which assigns to each person a surname
5. The rule which assigns to the name of teachers you have

B. Write a function for cost C(w) of meat if it costs ₱270 per kilo. Assume that w
represents the weight of meat sold. (2 points)

C. Write a piecewise function for the given situation:

The School GPTA officers want to give t-shirts to all the students for the foundation
day. They found a supplier that sells t-shirts for ₱180 per piece. The supplier agreed
to give the t-shirt for ₱145 for a bulk order of 100 shirts or more. Use a piecewise
function to express the cost in terms of the number of t-shirt purchases. (3 pts)

D. Emmanuel decided to put up a candy shop that sells a dairy chocolate that cost
₱135 per pack. The cost of making the chocolate is ₱90 and the operating expense is
₱4,500.
Suppose x represents the number of packs sold.

1. Write a total revenue function R ( x ) . (1 point)

2. Write a total cost function C ( x ) . (1 point)

3. Write a profit function P ( x ) . (1 point)

4. How much is the gain if Emmanuel sold 350 packs of chocolates? (2 pts)
5. How many packs of dairy chocolate must be sold to break even? Hint: what is

the value of x so that P ( x ) = 0 (3 pts)

Hint: Total Revenue = Price per unit x quantity sold
Total Cost = Total variable cost + fixed cost
Profit = Total Revenue – Total Cost

Activity 2: Let’s Simplify!

Directions/Instructions: Read, analyze, and understand each problem set. Use a

separate sheet of paper for your answers. (4 points each)

1. Suppose f ( x ) = 2 x + 1 and g ( x ) = 3 x − 7 , find (f + g )( x )

2. Let g ( x ) = 6 x − 7 and h( x ) = 5 x − 1 , find ( g − h )(2 ) .

3. Find ( fg )( x ) if f ( x ) = 2 x − 5 and g ( x ) = 3 x + 4 .

4. When f ( x ) = 3 x − 5 and g ( x ) = 2 x − 5 , find (f  g )( x ) .
