Maybe, just maybe, if the kids have anything useful to do

and any control of their own lives, they wouldn’t retreat
into mental identity labyrinths which are in many cases the
only area they feel like they’re allowed to own and control.

Identity is now a substitute for agency. You don't focus on
this sort of stuff when you're busy out in the world
actually doing things, it happens when your only sphere of
influence are elaborate mental frameworks that you need
to keep reinventing so that you don't disappear.

Teenagers aren’t allowed to make any meaningful choices.

What do I want to spend my time on?

What skills do I want to develop?
Who am I going to spend most of my day with?

Not even what time I’m going to wake up.

No wonder they’re so focused on the only choices they can make.

Everyone needs a story about who they are and what they are here for. If you can’t
create a good one about the stuff you do out in the world, you’re going to put one
together out of the stuff happening inside your head alone.

I couldn’t wrap my head around people saying someone is denying their right to exist
by rejecting the frame they use to perceive and describe themselves.

I think I get it now.

The frame is all they have.

Also, regarding the "right to exist", I just realized how
some people might be taking this very literally, because
they never knew what it's like to exist in the world outside
of the labels they identify with.
